Half Moon Bunds regreening the dry land of Pembamoto in Tanzania
The effect of #regreening over six years - from dry, dusty desert to green, expanding savannah. Imagine the impact these #EarthSmiles can have in the years to come! 🌱🌱🌱
In sub-Saharan Africa, 60% of land is degrading (see above, June 2018), with fertile land shrinking year by year. To reverse this, we joined forces with local communities to restore the land by digging #EarthSmiles, and the results have blown us away.
We’ve seen incredible transformations that give us hope for a greener, cooler future. But we can’t do it alone! Are you ready to be part of the solution? Follow us!

Growing trees against all odds Neema’s story
Переглядів 5842 роки тому
Neema has seen first hand how deforestation has affected the environment in her village. Only 30 years ago, when she was a child, her village was surrounded by trees. Today, like much of Tanzania, it’s almost completely deforested. Ever since, and only in one generation, temperatures have risen, soils have dried out, and rainfall has grown scarce. Our bunds are harvesting all the rainwater in this rain season
Переглядів 7 тис.2 роки тому
Our bunds in Arusha are harvesting almost all the rainwater in this rain season. The half moon bunds help to capture rainwater and prevent it to run off and cause erosion. By harvesting rainwater the water balance in the soil will restore which will increase the water availability for the seeds still present in the soil. The seeds will get a chance to sprout and regreen the area. In some very d...

Earth is NATURALLY changing....nothing to do with "man"...AT ALL.
The AMOC has changed enough...made Africa wetter and greener, according to NASA. A NATURAL occurrence made africa greener!.

Very nice. More please. Much, much more. And of course new and different structures as the topography and water cycle requires. I am not sure this will work that well in a more Northern region, like above about 45 degrees North? I am sure just stop Suburban sprawl would be better in those regions, less freeways too, much less. I am hopeful that the trend to educated girls and women to their fullest will result in women choosing to delay marriage and even then delay and degrease parenting too. That will lengthen the cycle time between birth to birth and reduce the total numbers. My hope is to see a global reduction of the Human Population by 10-20 per decade and arrive at a much more stable and productive and educated 2.8 Billion Humans globally by the year 2100. Pretty aggressive. But times like this need progress and aggressive ideas. We can't live in the past.
this deserves so much more attention!

Wimbo mzuri sana.
Just curious why half circle ?
The diameter of the half circle is relatively flat and faces uphill, so it is easy for rainwater to run down into it. The area of the half circle is dug lower down in the ground to store water, and the raised edges of the half-circumference of the circle act as a small dam to prevent water from leaving the small bund. If it does leave, it does so more slowly in a way that the nearby soil can absorb the water, rather than the rainwater flow washing away the topsoil and its nutrients. This half-circle method is a very efficient shape for collecting and retaining water. Each one is placed so the round edge faces downhill.

Use of solar powered dehumidifiers could increase the growth scales, exponentially. Solar cookers and induction stoves, could also significantly reduce use of firewood, as well.
these people arent going to have access to solar powered anything
You dont live in a country or a continent that has to struggle to get basic food, so you are talking about solar cookers and induction stoves. Tell us how disconnected from reality you are, without telling us how disconnected from reality you are!😂😂
They just can't let live stock clear every inch of green

Good
To bad we cant send 120 billion a year to regreen all the deserts and stop sheet erosion one step at a time, working together in peace to build a more prosporous loving world for our children.
Amazing initiative. This choral interlude really hit me in the feels: ua-cam.com/video/No4ITCpUQAc/v-deo.html If anybody knows where it's from... <3

Bonne idée simple et efficace
Why don't dig large deep pond or lake??
May be it dry up easily
Imho a pond covers less area, the local people don’t necessarily have the tools, money, and time to dig a deep pond, they might not have available digging machines like backhoes to do it, and it requires a lot of manpower to dig something that deep. Digging smaller bunds covers a lot of ground, can be finished in a few hours, and prevents soil erosion quickly over a large area. A deep pond might only help a small area, requires water transportation (energy and time, rather than the bunds which basically take care of themselves), and does not do much to stop soil erosion and preserve the soil’s nutrients. African cultures are also much more collectivist, so it is uplifting to have many people working together at once, connecting, encouraging each other when they get tired, and seeing how much land they can recover quickly together. It builds, takes ownership, empowers, and gives support for the community and its people. 🌱🌿🌳
Awesome 👍
As I understand it, the bare soil dries out and bakes which compacts it and make it much harder to absorb water. So you get more water running off then being absorbed. Digging the puddle soil breaks it up and traps water in the depression. Once plants start their roots will further break up the compressed soil.
a beautifully simple, yet often overlooked concept. we have the same issues in the UK. Farm land doesnt absorb water so the farmers suffer droughts when it doenst rain and floods when it does.
