Nice comeback from Kent and Brian !
Losing this one did hurt ! but good learning experience.
Among the losses, this was one of the better games we played and should have won.
Even pbvision think we won :P

Pickleball Tips: Leave Out Balls! Probably the most underrated skill at 3.5 and 4.0 level. Learn to leave the balls going out. To develop your judgement, leave any ball that you have doubts about. Yes, you will leave some balls that bounce in. That is part of the process. If all the ball you attempt leaving bounce out, you are not improving your judgement !

    Wrong. Sorry. Less power doesn't equate to more accuracy. See those overheads that keep coming back? They shouldn't come back. The point should be over on the first overhead.

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan Місяць тому

      @PickleSmithPickleball, thank you for the feedback. I agree that my comment “Less Power = More Accuracy” is not always true. My intent was to point out two things: 1. Placement is more important than power. Not saying power is not important, but rather placement is even more important. 2. Don’t mishit your overheads trying to got for 100% power. i have seen it happen to myself and other where trying to just destroy an overhead, we mishit and lose the point. As for whether the point should have finished on the first overhead, it does depend on the overhead skills of the attacking player and defensive skills of the other team and how well the overhead got executes etc. That said, I was trying to make a similar point, that earlier overheads, which were successfully defended, would have had a better chance of finishing the point if they were placed better. The third overhead was less power but better placed and won the rally.

      @@ThePaddlewan The placement, IMO, was poor, at least in this video. The ball bounces far to shallow in the court, resulting in it bouncing up to your opponents and allowing them to hit the ball easily. This is the reason those balls come back. Had the placement been deeper, then the ball is much lower and much more difficult for the opponents to return. Neither of the players exhibit good form for the overheads. Neither of them use the non-paddle are to help understand where the ball is and this is likely a large part of why the placement is so poor. Power is not the problem. The problem is poor mechanics probably due to a lack of understanding and/or a lack of practice. I discuss all this in my series on how to hit overheads well. ua-cam.com/play/PLBu168-affdPHfH_NUQY6j_hFU6A9uVgV.html

    @paddlewan can you do a review on Friday paddles?

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan 2 місяці тому

      @madhu-qf5tt, Checking with Friday if they will send me their two version for review. Today I played with a friend's Friday Paddle (Original Paddle). Overall I am not impressed with the paddle and cannot understand why it is considered a great value or a great paddle. Pros: It has good power, decent touch and looks nice Cons: Very poor spin (the surface is not like raw carbon fiber paddles that i am used to), heavy swing weight so slow hands speed at net. The power and stability comes from being a heavy paddle, but it is similar to my pickleball apes energy s, which is lighter so that power does not cost me hand speed. Also, to me, power without appropriate spin is very limited value. Without topspin, the power will just result in more of your drive going out. So as for being an amazing paddle, I disagree based on playing with this paddle today. I think most raw carbon fiber paddles are better then it. And Gen 2 paddles I have played with are in a different league (Friday paddle is significantly inferior). As for being a "best deal" at $69 for 1 paddle or $100 for 2 paddles, I think there better paddles at similar or lower price. A11N Carry C7 selling on Amazon at $50 today is a better paddle than this Friday paddle. Qyntelix 3K CARBON FIBER paddle selling on Amazon for $20 is a better paddle than this Friday paddle, at one third the price ! Of course this is just my opinion. Different played need different things from the paddles. And the Friday paddle does look good. However, if your priority is to get a paddle that plays well, look elsewhere in my opinion. I was disappointed enough with the Friday paddle that I will probably not do a detailed review of that paddle.

      You might be right, but I would like think that the depth of my 4th shot also affected their ability to get to NVZ after their 5th shot. Also they played the third shot on the back foot and behind the baseline, which also hampered their ability to follow their 3rd shot to the NVZ.

    i was playing with the spartus apollo, which gave me great feel on my backhand slices, but then recently switched to the hurache control x, which i prefer due to its increased power and long handle. I've been looking at the bread and butter shogun and pickleball apes energy to try out. after using a 6" handle, i don't think i'd ever want to go back to a 5.5"

      Interesting. A friend recently got hurache-x control+. May try it the next time I play with him. I have been happy with 5.5” long handle and also happy with longer handles. Only in last few months I am hitting more two handed BH, so maybe I will grow to like longer handles more.

      Thank you ! Yes my day job is engineering so I guess it has to be nerdy 😊 Yes the paddle is durable. Slight knocks or scuffs while playing will not affect the paddle, other than marks on the edge guard. A couple of my friends have been using paddle for 6 months or so. Like all paddles, it will lose spin over time, but other than that, still going strong.

    have you used an eraser on the paddle to remove particles from the carbon weave?

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan 5 місяців тому

      Yes, I use erasers in all my raw carbon fiber or Kevlar face paddles. It helps maintain the spin and keep them looking better. Almost required if you play outside. Don't have to use every day. Once a week or once in two weeks is enough depending on how much you play.

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan 5 місяців тому

      Some people also say it can help maintain the spin longer, because it minimize the affect of debris stuck in the surface of the paddle acting like a sand paper when ball hits the face. I have never done a controlled experiment to verify this. But even if it does not increase the spin life, I prefer having a higher spin of the clean paddle.

    Thanks for putting this video together! It was/is very helpful. You mentioned a person can get much better paddles in the $90-$100 range. To me, an additional $30, amortized over 6 months or a year a paddle will last, is a small price to purchase a better product. Which paddles in the $90-$100 range were you referencing that are bette me than this? Thanks in advance for your help!

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for the kind words. I would recommend two paddle lines: 1. Vatic Pro Prism (Flash or V7) 2. A11n Zenith (C7 or C6) They can be had for sub $100. For beginners - Intermediate players, Vatic Pro Prism may be better. They are not thermoformed so easier to control For intermediate - advanced players I will recommend the thermoformed A11n Zenith. You will get more power but resets will need more skill. If unsure, and you already have played with a raw carbon fiber paddle, go for a11n Zenith. The second choice will be standard or elongated paddle. People coming from tennis mostly prefer elongated and those coming from tabletennis prefer standard. I prefer elongated but it really is a personal preference. For beginners, I will recommend standard. But also think about on your mid hits, are you missing the ball on the side of the paddle (get standard shape) or the top of the paddle (get elongated). A11n Zenith C7 is elongated and C6 is standard. Vatic Pro prism flash is hybrid version of standard and V7 is elongated. Flash comes in both 14mm (more power) and 16mm (more control). I will go with 16mm unless you are looking for more power, in which case you may as well get a11n Zenith. Hope this helps ! Best of luck.

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan 7 місяців тому

      I checked on Amazon and a11n Zenith is at $85 with the $15 off code right now. Pretty good price for a thermoformed paddle. For Vatic Pro, you can get codes that will get you 10% off the $100 MSRP. A friend of mine’s code is GASTON if you are buying from Vatic pro website. Or if you prefer you can support some other reviewer by using their code.

    If you plan to play with only two players it’s going to cost you. You can reserve a court (2 hour court times). The total fee to reserve a court for 2 hours is $79.92. This total is divided by however many players. So if it is just the 2 of you then that is $39.96 each.

    • @ThePaddlewan
      @ThePaddlewan 7 місяців тому

      Yes, the prices are affected by supply and demand. Not too bad if 4 people group, but yes can me expensive if only two people are playing. They have a couple of membership options for people who play a lot. And there are some play option that you can join and play with people of similar skills for $20 for two hours (per person cost).
