I liked Romulus and I hated those horrible British accents. I had to watch the movie 3 times with the volume turned way up to understand what the male actors are saying. If I could change anything I want to see more of what happened on the space station.
I love AvP for the reason it gave us an action movie lead who's a black woman. It was something we didn't see very much back then
Yes that was absolutely a cool thing, she is by far the strongest element of that movie!
UA-cam has a captions plugin built in
And these captions I built-in look much nicer and are easier to edit than what is available through the uploader here!
Resurrection major flaws were- not enough action scenes and a too short 4th act. Other than that- it is an absolute masterpiece compared to the dreadful blockbusters that we get today. An almost perfect Alien film, for my money.
I mean, I agree! It has artistry here and the director did fabulous work, my sole issue is how this was written, regardless of tone or execution
@ Also agree- the script could have been richer or at least batshit crazier in the action department. Watch “Represent this” amazing analysis, script by script/version of the Alien Saga. My observations come from that video and my personal view.
@@frenchcoupon3391 Will definitely check it out, thank you!
This show was tough as hell, stop the cap.
Glad you enjoyed it! But to me, it was downright awful and missed everything I loved about the manga
Dont care is the best adaptation and people will cry no matter what
Ehh I don't even think it's the best Uzumaki adaptation anymore lol as many issues as I have with the live action film, at least it has a unique personality and adds a bit new to what we had. It's fair to critique the many issues of the show, otherwise we'll just get garbage
I never understood why Ripley thought that the alien queen inside her getting to Earth would spell the end for humanity or anything like that. Let's say they extracted the queen out of her, and her offspring did their usually thing of escaping containment yada yada, what's the worst that could happen? Even with the weapons we have today, let alone the weapons one would assume are available to the governing bodies of Earth in the time the film is set, they could deal with the threat with great ease. That makes her self sacrifice at the end all the more contrived. Alien 3, despite it's artistic merits (especially its score), is a disastrous film from a narrative perspective.
You’re annoying
Thank you that was insightful, it’s really disappointing. I knew nothing about it then I started seeing people getting hyped so I got excited, it almost looked like Ultra Q which I love. I feel bad for the animators
I am glad to hear you thought the video was insightful! And I agree, it is ultimately very sad for the animators involved and hopefully, some day we get an exact answer of what happened
Didn't know anything about uzumaki until I saw all those people making fun of the animation. Gonna read the manga now, this video was fantastic
Thank you!!! And please do check it out, it is a wonderful book, I'm hopefully doing a reread soon because of getting in the mood after making the video
Great analysis. Although I'd hope that Ridley Scott leave the Prometheus/Covenant debacle alone. Everything that unnecessarily sucked about Romulus has Ridley Scott's fingerprints all over it. It's a reminder that the original Alien wasn't really Scott's creation, it was Dan O'Bannon's. Ridley Scott is literally the worst influence on the whole franchise, and everything he did after 1978 made the franchise worse.
Thank you! And I agree, I do think giving whatever comes from Romulus more room away from Ridley Scott is better in the long run. And I appreciate you highlighting O'Bannon's contributions!
David Giler and Walter Hill contributed more to the finished product that is the Alien movie than O'Bannon. They saved the script and in particular Giler introduced some of the concepts which made Alien so fresh/unique, coupled with the terrifying designs by H R Giger of course.
Have you read the tabletop RPG, and what it's introduced to canon?
Different genre. There are three components of good ancient cosmic horror: time, space and mystery. Remove one and the entire thing stops working. In Alien the space jockey had been fossilized, meaning that the corpse was at least something like 20 000 years old. Could be millions of years. Could be billions of years, although probably not. So that's the time. They were in outer space on an alien planet and you had no idea where anything came from, that's space. And we didn't know the details because we only got a short excursion into the alien ship and everything was dark, weird and confusing. That's the mystery. Aliens already removed the time aspect, and every other movie since has chipped away at the mystery in unsatisfying ways. So now you're left with a... cosmic movie, and it's very tedious. It's not horror anymore because there's no mystery, it's not interesting anymore because everything happens in the now with only a very limited and vapid past. And it also manages to make the world seem small and probably boring by keeping the constrained setting. And then the memberberries from a far superior movie begin... What is the difference between a duck and a dead duck? Who knows? They look exactly the same, but they're definitely different.
I saw Alien when it came out. When I watched Prometheus, I didn't at grasp the complex morphology that you set out, and didn't feel motivated to try to work out the connections. It just seemed like a mess of horror visuals with an overlay of vaguely Christian allusions. My personal feeling on it was pretty much meh.
I understand that feeling a lot! That is a lot closer to how I felt on rewatch, but of all the films in the franchise, it grows a little each time. I don't think it does an incredible job at what it set out to do, I just appreciate it for trying
Romulus is much better than Prometheus and Covenant. The latter two suck much harder than AVP2. Change my mind.
Ehh I don't think I agree, but I can get it lol a lot of people I talked to you initially this past August had Romulus as their third favorite in the franchise. However, I think AVP2 is just one of the worst films period, it makes very sad
Enjoyed your Review. See many things like you
Thank you! And glad to hear you also did!
I really enjoyed it.
Definitely understand why people did! Honestly just wish I did too
@@moviegoodormoviebad I went into the film with no foreknowledge. I sat in the theater and watched the film on it's own merits. The environment and atmosphere in this film is excellent. It's paced well. It does things we haven't seen before. I generally cared about the protagonists in the film and understood why they were doing what they were doing. I enjoyed the zero G scene in the end of the film. Great job with a limited budget. I liked learning about how WY treats the colonists on it's many colony projects. This film is ALIEN without a doubt. The last three films in this series missed the mark for a lot of people. I enjoyed them but most people didn't. ALIEN: Romulus is a return to the stories and themes of the first two films. And those first two films where the best in the series.
@@the_sixxness I'm glad you did enjoy it, I certainly wish I did! The atmosphere felt lesser for me on rewatch and I think what I love about the franchise is how varied each entry is for me thematically, and I would rather want something bold and different at this point than a film trapped in its connections to the first two films in the series. That is far too safe for me, and I'd call few of the films in this series safe
I watched your video to the end. I understand you wanted something different. But different has been burying the series since 1997. And to say that this film isn't doing anything different is doing it a disservice. It was far from the copy and paste job Jurassic World was. The series needed to get back on track and this was a good film to get it there.
@@the_sixxness And I appreciate that and I understand you have a different viewpoint than me! But I also think this point about difference feels contradictory in your comment, which also just reflects that we have different opinions about what we enjoy in this series, which is fine! But I also think that difference is entries past 1997 is why people have loved Prometheus and Covenant and those connections to the first two films are reflective of both my criticisms of those movies and Romulus
Great video! I really like how you explain the plot in brief and then go into your thoughts on the films
Thank you, I am glad to hear that! I definitely will have these moving forward, with the exception being if I am avoiding any spoilers
I found Romulus to be exciting in the way it really pushed the theme of forced impregnation, especially in the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned. I found the scenes relating to this to be the most interesting and honestly wished they had made that more of a focal point for the movie. I do agree with you that it could have tread more new ground and pushed it much further, but I still came away relatively pleased with it. I fully agree with you on the Ash parts, I could not at all focus on what was being talked about because of how distractingly bad the facial animations were. There are so many other ways they could have handled that. I loved hearing your takes on the Alien franchise and hope you make more videos about exploring themes in horror. Awesome work!
Mmm this is definitely one of the stronger themes of the film! I think focusing on it more absolutely would have made for a stronger film. And I forgot to say this in the video, but Ash/Rook showing up in the film actually caused a few notable laughs and groans in my theater opening night. I can also say for sure, there are 5 videos left for the year and the first 4 are accidentally horror, so you will enjoy those!
See, this is the problem with "modern audiences", which I always interpret to mean "indoctrinated audiences". The second you cram your little political agendas into movies is the second they become unwatchable and all the sane people hate it. Keep politics and art separate or prepare for no audience and much loathing. Alien is not about politics. It never was. it wasn't even an entry into the feminist crusade against civilization and art with Ripley, because Ripley was not written as a woman. Not written as a man either. Ripley was written as a neutral medical officer. A professional, not prone to bitter rants about any imaginary partiarchy. Ripley became a woman because they cast Sigourney Weaver to play the part of that neutral medical officer. That's why she became so popular, and why every subsequent Alien movie keep cramming women into the role of space Rambo when they don't fit that role at all. Ripley also wasn't a space Rambo you see. Not until the very end of the second movie perhaps, when everyone else was dead, flying a ship or injured. Either she rescued Newt or no one would. Not very realistic either with almost no combat training, but at least her motivation made sense.
@@didgruntleddansnyderfan Yes, I read that all the characters were written as gender neutral, which is something I really like about the writing of the first movie. Dan O’Bannon, one of the original scriptwriters for Alien, stated that he intentionally casted men in the “impregnated” roles as an “effective means of discomforting male viewers.” He also stated that rape and forced impregnation are important aspects of the horror in the original Alien. H.R. Giger also said that the sexual overtones were an important aspect of the design of the Xenomorph. So sexuality, rape, and impregnation are all baked into the creation of this movie. I also don’t agree with your statement that art and politics should be separate, or are separate. Art has always been a means of expressing emotions about the human condition, of which politics is (whether you like it or not) a big part. I also believe that the observer of any art gets to have their own experience with it. So, if you don’t resonate with a political view of this film, that’s up to you. I, personally, find the political and interpersonal reading of the movie super interesting and meaningful. I dont think its fair to determine what other people “should do” with art, whether it’s the artist or the witness.
@@Jsloth6 Yes, but this is why movies tank in this particular case. Not a single movie can now be made without beginning with either race swapping or gender swapping classical movies, the most glaring recent example being the laughable Disney remake of Snow White and the Seven Diverse People. So a traditional folk story from central Europe about a white woman, which is why her name is Snow White, and comical side character dwarfs if now "Offensive" and must be changed into a brown woman from Colombia who hates the original story and the seven social workers. That sort of deranged politics has absolutely no business being in art, or even trashy Hollywood movies. Well it can be there, but as I said: enjoy your twelve customers with blue hair and nose rings, because nobody else will show up. And the repeated misapprehension that Alien is some feminist statement is in the same category. Carherine Waterston doesn't fit as space Rambo. She looks like she'd have trouble bench pressing a rifle once. Naomi Rapace doesn't fit. She's about three feet tall. None of them fit, and Sigourney Weaver didn't fi either, which is why Ripley was a medical officer, not space Rambo. This nonsense is definitely part of what has destroyed the Alien series. If you just write some good parts and cast well, Bob's your uncle. Or aunt! Wouldn't want to accidentally be politically insensitive to anyone in this moronic society!
Glad to hear someone else share my opinion on Prometheus. Love it on its own for what it is, but making it part of the Alien universe was a mistake. Really cool themes, loved the merging of creationism and evolution rather than setting them at odds, Even the scrapped explanation of space Jesus was sweet. It really has gotten better with every subsequent rewatch, and the soundtrack is so great.
It does have a banger of a soundtrack! And it also grows for me with each rewatch, just some of those Alien connections feel far too overt. I think even a hint here or there would have sat well with me there
I do wonder if Prometheus would have done better now. Don’t say at all it’s related to alien as I feel modern audiences are a lot more accepting to have “side step stories in the same universe”
I absolutely believe it would do better now and not only be more accepted, but have more room to be even more different, I'm unsure if Disney would allow that though
@@moviegoodormoviebad Sorry to break it to you, it would not. Prometheus is still generally disliked on the Alien fan forums and the audience hated it so much in 2012 they didn't bother showing up for Covenant a few years later. A sequel tanking before anyone has even seen it is a sign that its predecessor was not well received. Also I worked in DVD retail when Prometheus came out and it bombed on home video. I worked for a company with 127 stores nationwide and no one wanted to buy the movie, another sign that audiences didn't enjoy it in cinemas. Prometheus was one of the fastest titles I ever saw get clearanced in my 13 years working for that company. It was released on October 9th in the UK and by November 1st the DVD was reduced from £15.99 to £7 and the Bluray dropped from £19.99 to £10. This was still in the era when physcial media could make enough money to garner a sequel for a movie with poor box office, so for Prometheus, part of an established franchise, to be outwardly rejected to that level shows how badly it poisoned the well. Fans who bought the Alien Anthology in droves just two years earlier didn't show up to buy the disc of Prometheus. Thats a major red flag. Prometheus made over $400 million on its initial release but Covenant made $240 m on a $97 million budget, barely breaking even. A third part would see a further decrease (look at the Fantastiic Beasts franchise) so there is no financial incentive to revisit this part of the franchise. Hell, Romulus just referncing Prometheus seems to have pissed off a huge swathe of the fans, it split the fanbase and Fox had pulled the plug on a third part ever happening long before the merger with Disney. Why would Disney continue a storyline that was circling the drain and most fans had no desire to continue? Maybe you like it and you're too close to it to remember just how bad the reaction to both films was. They were the Last Jedi and Solo of the Alien franchise. Prometheus made money based on hype and the long awaited return of Alien post AVP, but it poisoned the well and killed the interest too. Why do you think they ahd to reboot again?
I feel as if "modern aduiences" are all smelly barbarians who should not be allowed to have an opinion about culture or literature.
I have seen Alien Resurrection once a few years ago. It was very much a pure popcorn movie and sorta in a way so was AVP (I’ve not seen AVP Requiem) I do feel between the 80s to mid 00s there’s these sorta slocky popcorn movies which are just “here’s just dumb turn off your brain” I have also only seen Covenant once, did see it in cinemas in 2017. You’re so right about it being mixed
13:22 “I think two things can be true at once” is me with Alien Romulus All of the issues many people had with Romulus doing what we’ve already seen I feel “is ok” in a “franchise stepping on point” It really depends where it goes later if this movie “will be worth it or not”. It’s how I feel about Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. Know I do agree having AI Holm after that initial scene is incredibly icky
Mmm this is a very fair take, and why I at least feel hopeful for what is next
Don't have a carrier pigeon but sharing is caring
Sharing is indeed caring, hope you enjoyed the video!
I can see that the trans/queer theme might be outside of many peoples experience, even indirectly, but how the heck don’t they see it as dealing with some other form of alienation? About the colours in the film, it did also occur to me that pink/purple/blue are the bi colours, and perhaps more likely, that purple might represent the integration or harmony of male and female aspects. Which seems even more pertinent now that I know the director is none-binary. Anyway, I enjoyed your video. (p.s. Did you gave a spoilers warning at the beginning? If not it might bean idea next time.)
I really had no idea it was anything to do with transness because the thing it's being compared to is so out there. Being transported into your own buffyverse? That sounds amazing and different enough that it involving also being the opposite gender seems minor. Ditto with your video using the Sailor Moon transformation sequence. It's conflating the _subjective_ feeling of transition with _objective_ properties and it really makes it unclear and mismatched.
Can you believe it's taken this long for the film to become available to rent on Prime in the UK? I've put off watching this video for months... This is exactly the standard of video essay I'd expect to see accompany a film like this on a boutique release. Really good stuff and I hope the video has performed well enough to justify you making more of these videos. Unfortunately I don't share the same love for the film. But I do feel it's beautifully made and has a really unique aesthetic. Hope you're hanging in okay after last night's result.
I can't believe it has taken so long to be released there! And I really appreciate that compliment about the video, thank you. There will certainly be another video by latest Sunday, just had some personal issues that affected my ability to film the next video I had all of September and most of October, and this new one may be a tad long lol I am tackling one of my favorite films series and it became a complex video. Hope you enjoy it soon! And thank you for naming about the election, I am handling it okay and am thinking about a path forward
as a trans person who was also born in 2006, it's funny to me that my personal pink opaque was ABSOLUTELY stranger things- a show that gained popularity for being shameless nostalgia bait for an era twenty years before i was born. nonetheless watching the first season shortly after it came out set me on the path to being who i am now, both as a film + tv major who's hoping to build a career making shows like the ones that have been core to my life, and as a transgender man who was very confused as a 12 year old as to why i felt like i really really wanted to be mike wheeler (before his character got ruined ofc).
Good insights about this great film!
Just rewatched this movie on Friday which was the perfect excuse to finally watch this video!! Love the discussion of how being trans and nostalgia interacts because it’s truly so hard to articulate to cis people how childhood media ended up becoming an integral part of my gender experience and just how I view myself. Looking forward to more content here!!
it's painful to watch interviewers not understand what the movie is about
i watched this movie @ like 12 am bc i thought it'd be a cool, chill watch about movies & being trans. and by the end i was shaking & crying & i didn't go to sleep til like 4:30
Owen was Maddie. He would not let her be free. He kept her buried inside himself and at the end he totally killed her off. That is why he never seen her again.
I do love this reading and had heard of it before!
What a great video! It really feels like night and day discussing this film in and out of queer circles, but something i find odd, and something you touch on, are these weird blinders to various scenes that can only be properly explained through a queer lens. It feels like discussing the films themes without the scene where Maddy draws the ghost onto Owens neck is near impossible when, but in a lot of nostalgia readings it gets overlooked! Anyways, great video and cant wait to see what you make next! 😊
Thank you! A bit delayed on the next one due to the script being over three times as long as the one for this, and I also agree on your point about talking about the movie inside and outside of queer circles! The movie is on Max now and I am seeing some non-queer people say some of the scenes at the end of the movie are not necessary, which is so bizarre haha
Power Rangers, dbz, yuyu Hakusho all huge shows for me growing up
Being raised as a girl and having mostly friends who were girls, I didn't hear PPG and Totally Spies get made fun of a lot. I loved them so much!
Ahh I am glad you were given that freedom! They were amazing shows! I was glad to still watch them, just sad it was so private
An excellent first video! Love the film and hearing such an interesting take on it was something I really needed. Can't wait for what's next!
Thank you so much for saying this! And the next video is coming very soon!
Your perspective on this film is fascinating to listen to. Great work!
Thank you so much!
Good luck on your UA-cam journey man. How been a fan of your TT for a while now so how to have successes here as well.
Thank you!!! I hope there is success here too!
Great video! I can’t wait to see more because I don’t see many people discussing films and themes like you are both on tik tok and youtube. Keep going🙌
I really appreciate hearing this!
❤
Growing up with a single mother I watched a lot of “girly” media as well as lots of films in general but I feel that that has helped to diversify my taste for the better. I had to watch this film on a dodgy website as I live in the uk and I didn’t want to wait a really long time for it and I don’t regret it at all.
I definitely felt it helped diversifying my media taste too!
I love the idea of full-length reviews like this one, eventhough i'd understand if you make some shorter videos too going forward.
There will be lots of similar length videos too this and some longer about bigger topics!
I’m excited to see what your long form content will look like! I’ve been meaning to see I Saw the TV Glow and now I need to!
Thank you, and please do, it is a special film!
Fantastic to hear your more in depth thoughts and it fit really well on a different platform, the structure is great and you can tell the passion behind it.
Thank you, it really means a lot to hear, I was really hoping my passion was clear!
i loved the video james, i love how in detail you went about the film and how passionate you are about this film honestly one of the best videos i’ve seen about the movie i’ve learnt so much more about this film bc of this video so thank you a lot
Thank you, that really means a lot to hear, especially with the number of videos are out about the film!
So happy to see you make the leap to Long-form content! I've loved your TikTok's so the opportunity to see you dive even deeper is great. I Saw The TV Glow is by far my favourite film of the year so far. I will say I did struggle to find the channel when just using the UA-cam search feature, had to look for a direct link on TT, maybe just as the channel grows you'll be top of the search, but also if you're not already, it could also be worth setting some tags as upload defaults for common misspellings of your username ppl could make e.g. getting the good and bad mixed in your username
Thank you!! And this is good to know about the tags, there have been lots of issues having the channel pop up with the search feature that seem to be UA-cam-related from what I understand, but knowing about the tags is helpful! Tags are very different here than on TikTok lol
I grew up with Buffy at a young age, and I grew up with shows like Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H at an even younger age! I never put a stop to think if it was weird or if it alienated me like Owen did in the movie. But there was so much in this film that just called out to me and clicked, the more I think about it the more brilliant it gets. Thank you for your video because it’s giving even more explanations!
Thank you, I am glad you got so much out of it!
Great vid James! I’m very excited to see a long-form version of your content. I hope one day you can cover ‘we’re all going to the worlds fair’ by Jane Schoenbrun. I love both of their movies but I think I prefer the latter. Anyway, fantastic video!
Thank you so much! And it's definitely a movie I want to cover in the future!
Nice video!
Thank you!
