Harry Rose--Frankfurter Sandwiches
Переглядів 31 тис.15 років тому
Vaudevillian Harry Rose (my great uncle) aka "The Broadway Jester" doing the song Frankfurter Sandwiches. He was active as an MC during this time until the 1950s. After moving to Los Angeles he died in 1962.
Reservation Dogs brought me here! Keeping it "organtic"!
Jewish girls love to give head. This is as close as they could come at the time. 0:00
Do you know where I can find this song on vinyl?
Not on vinyl, I think some shellac 78rpm versions exist.
She likes her dogs with mustard!
Harry Rose is so wonderful! Love him! Thanks for posting. :)
Something about the way that the guys in the background repeat "frankfurter sandwiches, frankfurter sandwiches", I didn't really care for it too much. There were many singers from back then that sounded anywhere from a little bit nicer to way waaaay nicer.
Any chance of a transcription of the lyrics? I just can't make out more than a third of what he's saying.
Even when 'twas Yom Kippur, quietly I had to slip her.... Frankfurter sandwiches all night long!
I always enjoyed this number in the PBS "American Masters: Vaudeville" program. It's great to see a more complete version of the song here. Thanks for posting.
Vaudeville was nearing its end then in 1928, the start of Talkies kinda killed off vaudeville (even though Jimmy Durante said "vaudeville is not dead, it's just resting" in a 1947 film with Esther Williams). The jazz and the speakeasies were what was king in the 1920s. "The Charleston", "Ain't misbehavin", "Nobody but you", "yes sir that's my baby" were all part of the speakeasy jazz flapper dance craze
There is an interesting reference to Harry Rose in the diary of Jeb Alexander (Carter Newman Bealer) for March 8 1932.
John McWhorter brought me here.
I saw just saw this as an extra on the "Broadway Melody" DVD I borrowed from the library. Great fun! (The extras; the movie not so much).
props to all star linguist and author john mcwhorter for bringing me here!
Hey! He's who brought me here as well! And well worth the visit.
Me too!
three! ... looks like he's averaging one confirmed a year... at least!
yep
Looks like I'm this year's McWhorter reccomendee
He was MWAHVELOUS! Truly. For years I had this number on a Video tape and would play it at parties.
Both funny and somewhat creepy... especially the interaction with the girl. Hilarious ‘double-entendre song though. A good version of this song was done by a group called ‘The Streamliners with Joanne’ in 1961
NOTHING CREEPY ABOUT THIS AT ALL. IT'S ALL IN FUN. GOOD LORD.
@@SeeburgMusic , back in those days, people didn't connect everything with sex and perversion like they do today, they knew how to think about topics without anything even remotely sexual crossing their minds. But, I do understand that the horrible sick creeps in the world in more recent times are the reasons why people today think the way they do.
This is wonderful! I didn't see what year this is… Do you know? I somehow stumbled on the Lawrence Welk version first, and I am delighted to find Harry Rose singing it.
1929 according to John McWhorter.
Seth macfarlane brought me here
Rosemarie squires sang frankfurter. sandwiches
One asshole hates frankfurter sandwiches
SeeburgMusic so far
+SeeburgMusic There's always one.
My husband and I are a neo- vaudeville duo "Pinch and Squeal" we cover this song! Gets 'em everytime!
Awesome! If you ever get it filmed I'd love to see it!
The strangest mentions come out! I think this song is due for a remake? Imagine what a rapper would do to the song? Although I assume the bun would be the rapper...wait...I'm so confused...
Hi Steve. Ron Hutchinson of The Vitaphone Project. We were involved in getting Harry's short restored. If you are still active here can you email me at ron@vitaphoneproject.com so we can connect?
Have you seen Varla Jean Merman's video of this song?
YES!!! Steve, if you don't know this, this little ditty was mentioned during an "American Dad" episode commentary. If you're interested, it was on Volume 4 during an episode called "Choosy Wives Choose Smith". Check it out!
Harry Rose also does the intro on Johnny Marvin's 'If you Don't Love me'
Yeah--That article links to this page. It doesn't really matter whether Harry was gay or not, except to his wife! He was probably just playing a role, like so many other comic actors. But I'm gay and these proto-gay portrayals shaped the identity and behavior of so many kids since who knew they were different. The cycle is finally broken, where most gay guys I know know that they don't have to act campy or effeminate, and they don't need to pretend to be straight.
Much thanks to you, Alex. I read the article and was delighted. I don't know if Harry was gay or faking it. He had a daughter who was a writer, but has passed from all family history, as well as his wife. I have some video of him in the 1950s where he's all but unrecognizable as a "toothless comic" and all "camp" has been purged. Regardless, I'm still peeved that no one in the family inherited his singing voice--especially me!!!
There was an article in today's NY Times about a new play starring Nathan Lane called "The Nance", which is about this type of character from Burlesque Theater--A stereotypical gay caricature which later became popular in film and TV. Usually these characters were portrayed by straight men, so the jury is still out on your uncle. "Frankfurter Sandwiches" is mentioned as an inspiration. Here's a sidebar from that story. Go to NYTimes.com and search for "Frankfurter Sandwiches" or "The Nance".
HES BRILLIANT!!!!!!!! LOVE THIS!!
You mean his falling into the pit? I've heard the story as well but never heard of it inside the family. I've no doubt it's true, however.
I hope the orchestra pit story wasn't true! At least he was still active into the '50s, thank goodness.
Thank you for sharing some of your family history, munteacher! I've always loved these short films with Harry; I helped with the DVD commentary for a couple of those "burlesque review" features. In the book "Notes on a Cowardly Lion," Bert Lahr says, "Comedy is always close to tragedy. In vaudeville there was a master of ceremonies named Harry Rose who always used to run out saying, 'Here's Harry!' One night, he ran too far, fell into the orchestra pit and broke both legs."
3:28 I sure hope those frankfurter sandwiches he slipped her during this period were Hebrew National franks!
No, not as far as anyone knew--and my family had its "gaydar" out in those days. Much of it was a fashionable affection. Nothing approaching it can be found in the film I have of him in the 1950s. My aunt Shirley and cousin Barney, who were relatively close to him in the 1950's would have said something. But who knows? In those days if you were gay you were deep down in he closet!!!
I don't ask this to be mean, but out of curiosity, could he have been gay?
@lebow1 He did some minor films, including a burlesque review. I have the clips which I plan to put up one day. The last years of his life were spent between New York and Los Angeles. He was very, very active with the Hollywood branch of the Shriners. Members of the family have fond memories of him. My father didn't. When Harry Rose's brother David (my grandfather) died, my father telephoned him. "Everybody dies" was all that Harry said. He died shortly afterward.
Karma! Sorry he was such a jerk to your dad.
We used to enjoy watching cable (when we could afford it!), especially TMC. I've always remembered a kooky song where the guy would sing 'frankfurter sandwiches, frankfurter sandwiches!' I was pleasantly surprised to actually find it on UA-cam! Thanks for sharing.
so that's what I missed
@67stardust It's a really catchy tune, isn't it! Oh dear, now I'm hungry again. Better go out for a HAMBURGER!
My Aunt STILL sings me Frankfurter Sandwiches, and i'm now 43!!!! Thanks for posting this.... love it...
who here searched for this after listening to the commentary?
"entitled...ENTITLED!"...love it!
Wonderful stuff, what a lovely memory of your great uncle for you
Grace Rogers is on youtube, just search under her name and Lilah. I think some Van & Schenck is on here, too. And all of the shorts are on the DVD of the Broadway Melody.
thank you for uploading this and giving us more information on him! I love his act!
Can you please post the whole thing? Grace Rogers song "Lilah" is awesome too! I've been fascinated by Harry Rose since I found this entire set of short subjects that you have on film.
