mr humphries being the gay icon of the seventies for 10 minutes

while Are You Being Served is a product of it's time and does contain some.. questionable jokes, i always thought mr humphries (who was played by a gay actor) managed to be camp and hilarious, and completely genuine at the same time. an absolute icon honestly series: are you being served (1972)

This guy was the funniest!
The funniest was when Mr. Humphreys was dressed up for a Greek wedding.
Wait, Mr Humphries was GAY??
Everybody in that show was talented except for spooner
His character of a gay man was the best, nonaggressive, not sexual, please take note this is how gay men should be today they would be more acceptable. acceptable.
Mr Humphries was bald? never noticed until now
Mr Humphries was my fave, May everyone that passed Rest In Peace.
4:40😆🤣
Brits and the employees of Grace Bros. just accepted Mr. Humphries. No questions asked. We need more of that.
People are strange, weird,
I absolutely loved watching this show years ago when it was on PBS in NYC.
John Inman was so much fun on this show! I had the occasion to meet him once at a charity dinner. He sat next to me at our table for several minutes and was a delight to talk to. Absolutely charming.
💙🤣👏🏻
Though Inman was gay, we were never quite sure about Mr. Humpries. In the words of Mr.Lucas "Is he, or isn't he?" 😊 Many a time this ambiguity was a basis of a wonderful joke. Especially in Grace and Favour 😂
1:40 “I’m not free!” 😂😂😂
7:10 Lucas being concerned for Humphries here is so nice - true friend, not just work gossip buddy. 😊
I loved watching this show. There’s nothing like British comedy.
Menswear! 😄👍
One of the best shows ever , nothing like the BBC series, always made me laugh.I miss them all, god bless them all. R.i.p😅😅😄😄😄😄
I read somewhere that the heads at the BBC hated the show but could not take it off the air because the audiences loved it...... sometimes being loveable just works
OMG, 1ST TIME hearing of Humphries. So freaking funny . Humor use to be this way. No questions, just laughs. I thoroughly enjoyed.
He was not “the” gay icon of the 70s. You are forgetting Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Joe Dallesandro, Divine, Tab Hunter, Rock Hudson, Elton John, and Sal Mineo to name just a few.
I have no idea how I got hooked on watching this show as a kid. I think it was because they took their basic jobs so seriously. And that nurse with her seXy voice & face, and it was a funny show!
British comedy the best bar none.
Just think...gay sex was only made legal in the UK in 1967, not long after this series came out...
I wonder, does anyone have any footage of the AYBS cast from the televised PBS pledge drives? I remember Mollie Sugden on Memphis PBS station asking for pledges.
Mr. Humphries was the gay character? Oh, that was subtle, then. I thought it was Captain Peacock. 🤔
I loved this show
5:10 *spins* “I’m extra” *laughs and strolls away* 😂
I watched this show with my mother back in the day. She loved this show and Benny Hill. I still watch the reruns on Tuesday evening every week. Mr. Humphries steals the show most of the time.😄
Never gets old. Sitting here, laughing away with headphones on while hubby wonders, what's so funny?
I recently discovered this show on Prime and it's giving me retro laughs! Mr. Humphries is my favorite!
ICONIC.
I always thought it was Capt. Peacock who was gay.😬
Given the Climate right now I say Thank You Mr. Inman.
My favourite brand of british humour, gay british humour
Jon Inman was my favorite on are you being served he was hilarious ❤❤❤
Mr. Humphries was my favorite character on the show! He was hilarious!
Thanks I enjoyed that show.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved this show
John Inman. Gone too soon at age 71.
Mr. Humphries is my hero. While he could be discreet on the job, he could also revel in who he was. John Inman always said Mr. Humphries was just a sheltered boy. He was discreet about LGBTQ+ issues and I appreciate that. No reason to except him to be a warrior. Just give us some sugar to make the medicine go down easy, as Mary Poppins said.
Mr. Humphries was gay?
Mr humpries unhinged moments.
I love you, John Inman. My Dad had real hatred for gay men, for whatever reason...my Mom said maybe his own masculinity he might have had doubts about....but even my Dad thought Mr.Humphries was hilarious....his One exception
Funny..never watched this British import to the States. But, why do the Brits all have bad teeth?
I always thought he was great and so entertaining. May he rest in peace.
I miss this program..I wish they would do reruns…
This must have made people in the 70s so uncomfortable! Oh the media
Immortal!!! ♥️❤️🌍🌎🌏
