Happy Day of the Dead! This week, Gre-gory Smalley and Giles Deadwards discuss the week's weird new releases. First, the bizarro beauty satire "The Substance" hits Mubi streaming. Also on Mubi: a hidden short from David Cronenberg with the imposing but accurate title of "Four Unloved Women, Adrift on a Purposeless Sea, Experience the Ecstasy of Dissection." Also: the Belgian crime comedy "The O...

Our Halloween season guest this week is Paolo Zelati, author of "American Nightmares," a book of interviews with American horror directors of the 60s through the 80s. He's also a collaborator on George Romero's final screenplay, the as-yet-unproduced "Twilight of the Dead." Paolo has lots of interesting stories, but before we get to him Greg and Giles go through the week's new weird releases: "...

"Penguin" Pete Trbovich looks at the unrealized potential of "Dreamscape," a dream-assassin flick that anticipated "Inception" by four decades although Christopher Nolan put a novel twist on the concept by making his movie good and entertaining. You could watch "Dreamscape" on Halloween, or you could just head off to the Village Pub for a generic beer.

Other items discussed: Bi Gan alert for "Resurrection," Guy Maddin and the Johnson's release G7 satire "Rumours"; an experimental hip-hop feature entitled "Once Again (For the Very First Time)"; "Caligula: The Ultimate Cut"'s arrival on VOD hopefully ends our endless coverage of the re-...

It's a workmanlike pre-Halloween episode as Greg and Giles run down the week's weird news and releases. Somehow never came up during the time I made this (and having to edit down via copyright mandate), ... but Nostalgia Critic reviewed Frighteners too just 2 years ago, and, naturally, was more of a whiny dick about the movie. Alas, his taste for weirdness ends at the borders of Hot Topic. - ua-cam.com/video/WI5328BWYXQ/v-deo.htmlsi=GDYymvYf_MNX9xg4 At least viewers can contrast and compare. He has his points, of course, but a lot of what he complains about can be retorted with "it's pre-Tolkien Peter Jackson, it's supposed to be loopy!"

Great review! I'd like to see this remade with modern tech and an updated script. Despite the film's flaws, it's pretty thought-provoking as a historical example alluding to the potential terrors of A.I. Off to see if I can unearth an original copy of the book AND its update ...

Very underrated film. Limited obviously by some screenplay issues, technology and the execution of the concept was not as well done as it could've been. As far as the concept itself? Brilliant stuff. A very intriguing premise, but the film tries to punch a little higher than the intellectual ability of its script. The ending is pretty good though and it does end on a positive note ultimately.

I saw BAD in the theaters when it first came out in 1977. I was dumbstruck. But by the time it was released on VHS, I not only bought it, I had BAD parties. At most parties, one or more people would go running out of my apartment cursing me and ending our friendship. I knew the party was a success! Yes, I was born, raised, and lived in NYC for most of my life. These people are real. And yes, the basis for this movie is still found in movies made today. This was the first. The original. This was BAD.

Nice to know i'm not the only one who discovered this gem of a movie back then. Virtually the same thing happened to me - as in choosing to see it blind rather than go and see a "normal" film as it were! Some fantastic observations about human nature by Mr Mitchell regarding the idea of using a face rather than an airship. Although i suppose we missed out on having warriors on horseback sporting airships on their heads. Maybe in Zardoz 2?? Ive got this book in my basket ready for a Christmas read and im sure its going to be as fascinating as the author. Well done guys
