Lodger (Pat Metheny) - bass play along
This one's really fun to play. Great B string workout too.
I notice how much I'm twitching in this video. I think it's because I'd adjusted the strap and it wasn't feeling quite right.

Desafinado (Eliane Elias) - bass play along
Переглядів 72028 днів тому
Playing bass along with Eliane Elias's version of Desafinado. The original bass part was removed with Lalal.ai. The bass is higher in the mix than would be normal on account of the point of this video is to hear myself play bass. I think I'll start posting videos of me playing bass along with songs I like. I'm not really an amazing bass player, but I play every day. I remove bass parts from son...
Fossil Falls from Super Mario Odyssey

I did my own version of the Fossil Falls theme from Super Mario Odyssey. The original is here ua-cam.com/video/9ITVMNA5IvM/v-deo.html. It's an addictive nostalgic-sounding song that I couldn't get out of my head for a few days, so I made my own version.
Improvising with a Generative Groove in Bespoke Synth
Переглядів 9262 роки тому
Bespoke Synth is a pay-what-you-want modular environment. It's like a scaled down, limited (in a good way) VCV Rack. I've started using it to make mostly realistic generative drum parts to improvise along with. In this video, I add some bass and keyboards to follow the drums and noodle around with them for a while. Check out Bespoke Synth here: www.bespokesynth.com/
Blues Improv with Charlie Hunter/Bobby Previte Album

Charlie Hunter and Bobby Previte have released a blues play-along album, "12 Galaxies." It's essentially a "blues in all keys" play-along. The album is available on Spotify and elsewhere, but there's also a paid version that comes with loops from the tracks as well as multi-track sessions. yurtrock.com/products/charlie-hunter-bobby-previte-12-galaxies I have most of the Aebersold play-alongs, b...
Improvisation with World Drum Club

Kalani at World Drum Club put up some percussion jams the other day, so I improvised along with one them. I always feel like I overplay and don't listen enough on stuff like this, and there are timing issues in my lines sometimes 'cause in general my time isn't great, but I guess it turned out okay. Here's the original video: ua-cam.com/video/-6hxYwxUD6A/v-deo.html Kalani's playing is always gr...

Improvised Trombone Solo with Shaker

I affixed a small square shaker to my slide with gaffer tape and recorded some improvised stuff. I did a video a while back on holding shakers while playing, but that was more about trying to play actual rhythms on shaker while playing trombone. This one is just an improvisation with a shaker affixed for some extra sounds.
Lo-fi Trombone Improv Practice
Переглядів 8173 роки тому
Lo-fi is great for practicing improvisation. The tempo usually hovers around 70-80 bpm, which is good for practicing slow or playing double-time for working on subdividing faster notes; the chords are usually simple and go well with major or minor pentatonic scales; the songs are mostly grooves with no melodies or only traces of melodies that you can easily learn and improvise around; and there...
Gauss Field Looper - Ambient Trombone

I tried out the Gauss Field Looper and put it through the paces with my ambient improvised trombone music. The Gauss Field Looper is a collaboration by well-known UA-cam tape enthusiast Hainbach and legendary audio software creator Bram Bos. All sounds were generated in real-time on trombone with only some post-production to adjust levels and such. The Gauss Field Looper is meant to simulate th...
Valhalla Delay Review with Ambient Trombone
Переглядів 1744 роки тому
I recently purchased Valhalla Delay by valhalladsp.com. It has a handful of great features that make it useful for long ambient loops: 20 sec max delay time, diffusion network to blend delays into reverb, delay ducking, and several different delay emulations. The BBD emulation in particular is my favorite. I only have a couple small quarrels. One is that the diffusion network can't be toggled o...
Trombone Cassette Frippertronics

I setup my two cassette players Frippertronics-style. The first one records, and the second one plays back while feeding back some signal into the first one. Noise is difficult to control because, well, it's cassette tapes. And over time the feedback builds up this shrill noise around 1.5kHz because, well... it's cassette tapes. I like this setup better than the tape loop I used in my previous ...
Improvised Trombone Tape Loop 01

Watching some videos by Hainbach and Amulets have gotten me interested in working with cassette tape loops. This is my first attempt at using tape loop setup for my improvised trombone ambient music. I thought about calling this "Trombone Fr...

    Great intonation and choice of notes, but choosing to stop all of them sounds a bit "mechanical" to my ears. Some longer, relaxed ones in between would maybe make it even better 🙂

    What kind of horn are you playing on? It sounds great! Also, nice usage of Bespoke generating the rhythm section! It felt pretty natural to me. I need to spend a little more time learning Bespoke. It's amazing, but I haven't taken the time to really get good at using it. It's kind of like relearning VCV Rack. But then again, where VCV has a variety of developers and modules, there's not much unity. So VCV rack is never something I feel I know very well. I've got maybe 1000 modules downloaded, and that means 1000 manuals to read. Bespoke has a more consistent UI and UX for sure!

      @QuietHorn Рік тому

      Thanks! It's just a normal large bore trombone (Getzen 3047AFR), but I add an octaver to bring out some high end since large bore horns are kind of dark. I agree about VCV Rack. I've used it quite a bit and it's amazing, but the number of modules can be overwhelming and it's easy to get sucked into tinkering with modules and not making music.

      @markfdesimone Рік тому

      @QuietHorn true, but there is so much warmth in a good large bore sound. It's like dark chocolate. I have a hard time being nimble on large bore these days, so I usually get out the small bore, but I think that's probbbbably more a matter of being in shape

    All your videos are so great! I played trombone from 2004-2013 and haven't really touched it until an ambient/experimental/free group asked me to sit in with them - since then I've been relearning my appreciation for the horn through all my guitar and synth pedals and your videos/reviews/techniques have been super helpful in this exploration. Looking to find the right input chain for the horn into a granular synth/delay pedal now

    • @QuietHorn
      @QuietHorn 2 роки тому

      Thanks! Yeah, trombone is really a great instrument for ambient/experimental stuff. It blends well to counter other harsher sounds. For granular stuff, there's some out there (Lemondrop, Microgranny, etc.), but they mostly seem built for manipulating pre-recorded files rather than live mangling, though I guess that could be useful too. If I were doing it, I must just get an iPad mini, an iPad-compatible audio interface, and use AUM and other apps to build a setup.

    Nice technique! Reminds me of some of the techniques used in 70s fusion. The super fast lip trill is still mind blowing though...I always wondered if it was daily practice or fast-twitch muscle related. After some years, I think mine won't get much faster. Thanks for sharing this.
