Sword & Shield VS Yian Garuga - Monster Hunter World: Iceborne [Casual Hunt]
Casual gameplay of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, showcasing the Sword & Shield. In this video my Palico and I head out to the Ancient Forest to take on The Black Wolf Bird - Yian Garuga!
#MonsterHunterWorld #MonsterHunter #SwordandShield #Iceborne #MonsterHunterWorldIceborne #YianGaruga #CasualGaming
This is the PlayStation 4 version running through a PlayStation 5. And for the record: My Palico is using a Paralysis weapon.

00:11 Sword & Shield VS Yian Garuga
09:30 Conclusion & Hunt End
09:50 Equipment & Layered Armor Info

Before I go any further, I would like to formally apologise to my Palico, Mr. Squirt. That poor cat took a beating on my behalf, but he still fought by my side like a champion! Also Mr. Squirt is based on my real-life Palico who started my Monster Hunter journey with me, but is sadly no longer with us. So I guess I take any harm to his in-game avatar a little personally?
Full disclosure - I'm no Sword & Shield main. I'm trying to learn the weapon, and what you're seeing here is my work in progress. In saying that, I'm really enjoying my time with it so far. My distance and timing still needs a bit of work, but I feel more comfortable than what I did when I first started.
Yian Garuga combines a lot of traits and moves from other monsters... and then speeds them up and then shoves it all into a _very_ angry package. Given the compact size of the monster and its mobility I thought this would be a good match-up for the Sword & Shield. And despite (embarrassingly) repeatedly getting poisoned and fighting on terrain that didn't really work in my favour, I thought this was a fun fight.
I _really_ would've like to have landed a few more Falling Shield Bashes on its head though... Maybe next time?

This video makes me want to give insect glaive another shot I could never truly understand it but this makes me want to try again
If you do decide to give it another go, then I hope that it goes well for you?
Daaaamn, how I LOVE insect glave!!!
You and me both!
Personally Insect Glaive is one of my favourite weapon since it can make you safe since it focus on Airborne, and btw good game you got there i never thought that Insect Glaive can be used even in Endgame session, since the damage you gave to the monster never actually that big compare to LS and GS.
Oddly enough, I'm one of these people who never even thought about damage output. I was just playing because I was enjoying myself. One minute I'm in the Ancient Forest beating up a Great Jagras. Next minute I'm standing amongst the rumble of Castle Schrade staring down Fatalis. It was a crazy journey, and I loved every second of it!
Greaasword whenn?
I'll do Greatsword when I can get my skill with the weapon up to a point where it can be considered "somewhat competent," as opposed to where it is now which is "embarrassing blooper reel material".
@ ok boss
He would be my favorite if It wasn't for his instant charges
I can understand where you're coming from. For me, the charges didn't bother bother me too much... it was just the larger-than-you-think hitboxes on the charges that got on my nerves.
Thank you for watching! All equipment and Layered Armor information can be found towards the end of the video starting at 09:50 A few notes for anyone interested: 06:08 Poisoned 3 times in a row - Getting poisoned once?.... OK, fine. Poisoned a second time not long after... Annoying, but don't let it happen again... Poisoned a THIRD time... OMFG!!! I'M GOING TO DESTROY THIS THING!!!... Yeah, this was pretty embarrassing. I do advertise this as a casual hunting channel, and my performance isn't perfect, but even I was shaking my head as this. The rest of the hunt was fun though. 10:36 Weird Layered Armor - I tried replacing the arms on my Layered Armor with the Leather Armor cosmetic. When I initially equipped it in Seliana it looked fine. But when I spun the character model in this footage here I realised that inside the forearms looked weird. So if I wear this Layered Armor again I'll be sure to fix this.
Thank you for watching! I made this back in a time when it didn't dawn on me to include equipment information in the video itself. Therefore - All Build & Layered Armor information can be found in the description. I think most of the video is relatively straightforward, but just in case you're interested: 06:32 Weird Transition - I cut the shot just as Velkhana is falling. I was trying to "link" the shots together by transitioning into a similar looking starting point for my avatar. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospective... it looks a bit weird. 07:22 Intermission/Blooper Reel - So here's me getting beaten up for your pleasure. Regarding the Safi'jiiva "speech portions"... it seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I've got mixed feelings about it. Although that part where Safi pulled off the Supernova with no crags to hide behind was something that I KNEW had to go into the video. And if you watch closely - you can see me attempt the Final Fantasy Dragoon Jump as a true last ditch effort... FYI - I still took a cart ride back to camp, along with everyone else... 13:50 "Hunter Group Therapy" - OK, look... this is an unedited version of a video I made a while ago. For whatever reason, at the time I made this I thought the image of several hunters gathered around Fatalis' head and just wailing away seemed kind of funny... I mean, I LOVE smacking Fatalis in the head as payment for all those cart rides he gave me! I'd been editing non-stop for ages at this point, and was probably slightly out of my mind. Looking back now the text seems a little out of place, but it's there.
wish to see more of ur content
I plan to keep making more.
Glad to see people still finding ways to enjoy this game while we wait for wilds! The 5th fleet commends your actions. Hunt on
Always happy to serve my Fith Fleet comrades!
Very good video bro. And nice layered armor combination your character looks really cool
Thank you! Glad you like it!
Thank you for watching! I made this back in a time when it didn't dawn on me to include equipment information in the video itself. Therefore - All Build & Layered Armor information can be found in the description. I think most of the video is relatively straightforward, but just in case you're interested: 07:21 The Intermission/Blooper Reel - These segments became something of a "tradition" whenever I did a multiplayer compilation video. Due to problems with the video editor I was using at the time I had to edit these segments as their own separate video. As a result of this - the music and sound isn't quite right. Personally I'm not happy about this, bit it was what I ended up rolling with. If you're curious about the world exploding at 08:26 - this was an idea I got from one of Smoke's Fatalities in Mortal Kombat 3. I was hoping to find a cheesy GIF of the planet going "BOOM!"... But I had no luck. So I had to settle for this stock animation instead... I think it gets the message across...
How to get that kind of slashy effect like that?
Honestly? No idea. I assume that it's tied to the cosmetic skin/augment attached to my weapon (Kulve Taroth+). Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong
Thank you for watching! All Build & Layered Armor information can be found in the description. I think most of the video is relatively straightforward, but just in case you're interested: 08:32 The Intermission (Blooper Reel) - The Intermission Blooper Reel became something of a tradition whenever I did a multiplayer video. I like to have a bit of a laugh at my own expense, not to mention have a chuckle at the unpredictability that other players bring to the hunt. The choice of music seemed oddly appropriate when I first discovered it. Mix that in with my unorthodox sense of humour and some Monster Hunter fever dream weirdness, and you get... this...Don't ask me for explanations with some of my choices, not even I know what I was thinking...
which armor is that?
Layered Armor: Odogaron Alpha+ Layered Head, Odogaron Beta+ Layered Chest, Odogaron Alpha+ Layered Arms, Odogaron Beta+ Layered Torso, Odogaron Beta+ Layered Legs.
Wow, you really make using dual blades look easy to use! I’m dual blade main myself, but I haven’t monster hunter in a while so no doubt I’ll be a bit rusty, lol. But once I get MHW beta test 2 on my ps5 and the actual game, I’ll be brushing up on my skills in no time! Your hunts are amazing as always, happy hunting! 😁
Thank you. To be fair this is selected footage, so you don't get to see all my failures. Personally I had a lot of fun playing the Dual Blades from last year's Beta test, so I hope that you do to in both the upcoming Beta test and final release?
@@Roving_Sentinel Ah, I would’ve love to play the first beta, but I didn’t have a ps5 at the time. My twin brother surprised me with one on Christmas and now I can participate! Though I’m wary of playing online. I have this belief that ps5, Xbox and pc gamers tend to be more competitive and hardcore in their gaming. 😅
Congratulations on having the opportunity to join the upcoming Beta test. Word of warning - The PS5 Beta Build is rough. Capcom are not using a build that reflects the final release (long story behind this). So anyone playing it for the first time who doesn't know this information may be a little confused. The footage I've seen of the current PS5 build seems to perform much better. As for crossplay... I personally didn't have any issues with other players during the last Beta test. Then again, most of the players I met weren't native english speakers. I did find that I could modify any posted quests to be single-player only, so there's always that option.
@@Roving_Sentinel Ah, thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it. Though honestly I wasn’t really expecting it to run completely smoothly as it’s just a beta trial run, lol. As long as it runs fine when the actual game comes out, that’s enough for me.
Happy Hunting!
Beautiful fluid combat dammm
This, this right here, it pleases me
Thank you for watching!... Wow! I really went for that Heavenly Blade Dance whenever I had the chance, didn't I?... Although admittedly a few of them were complete accidents. Anyway, because I made this back before it even dawned on me to film and display my loadouts - So.... all Build and Layered Armor information can be in the video's description.
Your videos are so awesome. Monster Hunter World was my first monster hunter and i am insect glaive main. Going into wilds i will be retiring the glaive and trying to main hammer plus sword and shield. But ur videos have been super inspiring at helped me get better at using the glaive. So thank u.
Glad that you're enjoying my videos! Glad I could provide some inspiration. And I hope that you continue to enjoy your Monster Hunter journey going forward?
Thank you for watching! I made this back in June 2024, and I haven't altered my original recording in any way, so as a result the format is a little different from my current videos. All equipment and layered armor information can be found in the description (as opposed to the end of the video. It didn't even dawn on me to put my loadouts in the video back then) Just a note regarding the first sequence starting at 00:10 - I'm obviously using a different loadout against Nergigante because I don't have any earplugs in this section. I recall capturing this footage first, before redoing my build and capturing the remainder of the footage with the builds listed in the description. For the life of me I can't remember exactly what I was using. Also the Outro Sequence starting at 10:09 asks that you "Like and Subscribe"... I stopped using this when I started this channel. You all know how UA-cam works, I'm not going to tell you what to do. But, this is the original, unaltered video, so the overlay is still there.
Is the game more optimized nowadays?
Allegedly "Yes", but the upcoming round of Beta tests use the same build shown here in the footage (ie. no changes), so expect confusion and misinformation up until the release of the final game.
Rey Dau absolutely feels like something out of Frontier and I LOVE it, if this is how crazy he is I can't wait to see what the do with Arkveld.
It's really nice to see this style of Glaive combat. Awesome fight
Thank you. I like to have a bit of fun when I play. Glad you enjoyed!
I'm so glad we can turn the palico voice off cuz that thing would get annoying during hunts lol
It's not that bad honestly and it's way more convenient as you don't have to read what your cat has to say during battle. Also at first I thought it'll get annoying, but it's actually quite fitting. Whatever floats your boat tho
I can understand why people don't like the voices, but I too fell into that category of players who ended up finding useful. I'm someone who can't read subtitles in the middle of a fight, so actually knowing what my Palico was about to do really helped. But I appreciate the fact that Capcom has given players options in regards to their own personal preferences in regards to whether or not they actually want the voices.
Recently discovered your channel and I really like how you offer notes about the video. Looking forward to Monster Hunter Wilds.
Glad you're enjoying my content. Thank you for your support!
Thank you for watching! All Equipment and Layered Armor information can be found starting at 06:08. A few notes since I'm here: No Heavenly Blade Dance - Despite being a huge fan of this move, I knew that my chances of pulling this move off on a smaller target like Odogaron was slim. The slide animation does trigger a few times... unintentionally, so my angle was wrong to pull the move off. And the one time I DID try to trigger a slide... it didn't work. Sorry Heavenly Blade Dance fans! Slinger Shots - Apart from using Slinger Shots to finish off some of my attack animations, I sometimes use it to propel myself to either get out of harm's way (because I think I'm about to get hit)... or to put myself in a better position to cause some harm. Plus I like diving sideways and shooting things.
Railgun wyvern
I'm still a fan of the "Thor Magala" nickname.
Thank you for watching! All Equipment & Layered Armor information can be found at the end of the video starting at 09:28. A few notes: Not Fighting Head-On - I do this throughout the video. I tend to come in from an angle when fighting Zinogre as opposed to head-on. I find that he REALLY likes to charge me, and he REALLY, REALLY likes to charge me when I'm locked into an attacking animation. So as a result it looks like I'm hitting random parts a lot. The only time I come at Zinogre from the front is when I'm confident that he can't counterattack... this works... most, of the time. 05:20 Rollin' Around - In this section of the map I roll like a SoulsBorne player because I'm cautious of the tremor effects caused by the specific parts of the ground. Upon reviewing the footage I realised that the tremor effect is only triggered once... and I'm not even standing on it... Anyway, enjoy my amateur acrobatics. 08:10 WAKE UP EXPLOSIONS!!! - Despite already having used my Mega Barrel Bombs, I went back to camp and restocked and just edited that part out. I really, really, really wanted Zinogre's wake up call to be special...
ya fine🥵
Imagine being defeated by a tiny man with a stick and a bug
And then to add insult to injury - Sometimes the bug delivers the final blow.
Nice play
Thank you.
Thank you for watching! All Build & Layered Armor info can be found at 09:48 While this certainly isn't my fastest hunt against Tempered Ruiner Nergigante, it has been one of my most fun. A few notes while I'm here: 07:45 Sharpening - I have cleared this fight without sharpening before, but my Glaive was taking a beating this round. Normally I wouldn't let the sharpness fall that low, but Nergigante was NOT giving me any breathing room... The fact that I was repeatedly stabbing him in the face with a sharp object may have caused his mood to sour... 09:15 Healing - Yes, I took the easy way out, and then won seconds later... Look, I've had too many instances where I've pushed my luck and gotten a ride on the Palico Express for my troubles... Of course if I went down that path, at least I'd have blooper reel material...
I keep telling myself that I will start on a new weapon other than the mighty Bug Stick (when getting Rise/Sunbreak and GU) but I just love this weapon too much. The new moves look awesome
Totally understandable. I play around with other weapons myself, and certainly get enjoyment out of them. But ultimately I consider myself an Insect Glaive main. What I say is - Do whatever makes you happy!
One thing that does not make me become an SnS main instantly: The sword being on the left hand...why? hahaha
It's a Capcom thing. All Hunters are left-handed. Don't know why. But in a world where your main helpers are bipedal talking cats, I've hit a point where I've stopped asking questions.
@Roving_Sentinel true
Hey!! Sword and shield main here!! Cool vid, but I was wondering what mod you are using for your character, looks really cool!!
Glad you enjoyed the video! I do provide all the Layered Armor information at the end of the video, but since you're here - At 09:06 You'll see that my SnS has a Workshop+ skin on it. At 09:28 You'll see that I'm using Buff Body Gamma Chest & Arms, Stygian Zinogre Beta Head, Stygian Zinogre Alpha Torso, and Bone Legs.
@@Roving_Sentinel Thank youuu
Thank you for watching! All equipment and Layered Armor information can be found towards the end of the video. A few notes for anyone interested: 00:46 Roundslash - You'll see me do Roundslash at the end of some combos. I'm not doing this because it's powerful, I'm doing this to break up my timing and (hopefully) set-up a back-step. Diablos sometimes has unusual/inconvenient timing, such as stepping/jumping out of range when I tried to set up a back-step off a combo, so I started throwing in the Roundslash to break up my own timing, and yes, I found that my back-step set-ups began to land more. 01:11 Screamer Pods - I bought plenty of Screamer Pods, and had a shortcut to create more. As much as I love brawling with monsters, it makes your life a lot easier if you can neutralise some of their more annoying attacks. 05:38 Dragonblight - Yes, I did notice that Ebony Odogaron hit me with Dragonblight. Yes, I had nullberries. But I was too busy trying not to be the meat in a monster sandwich at the time to deal with it... Then it went away... 07:25 I'm trying to angle away from Diablos as it charges me. Problem is, because of how I'm spinning the camera, I don't see the wall that I'm running into - and I cop a horn up the backside for my efforts... 08:43 Victory Screen - For whatever reason UA-cam has caused this particular segment to run weird. It's fine on the original video. It's not a huge deal, so I've left it. It's still pretty weird though.
18:50 was so on point.
This beast is beautiful
This beast is indeed beautiful. The way it tears up the landscape is beautiful. It's attacks are beautiful... ...except when I block an attack with my face... that REALLY hurts...
are we gonna talk about the thunderous broad sword on its left wing!!??? CANT BE MORE ORIGINAL THAN THAT
Insect glaive just feels like a true martial weapon this time around. It will still have the bounce gameplay but I doubt I will be using it that way much, i think it's ground gameplay is much more exciting.
Funnily enough I ended up enjoying the grounded gameplay too. Personally, I was enjoying the Beta version in the sense that I was looking for new ways to play the Insect Glaive, and I had fun experimenting with the new tools available. In this footage, I'm enjoying using the new Decending Thrust to reposition myself, and I'll probably keep doing this. As far as the final game is concerned, one way of looking at the Insect Glaive getting some of its moves back is that we'll have "options." Sometimes I need a good frontal assault to overwhelm a monster... And sometimes... I need to become a helicopter 🤣
Honestly Im glad they fixed the weapon while keeping these new moves, it just felt awful on the beta and the hitstop is non-existent
I'm definitely looking forward to the hitstop coming back.
That’s great honestly. I’m just glad they gave us more overall options without having to take anything away
yeah no, you are playing the hacked version, because no chat on your hunt
OK smart guy, how do you explain the chat at 19:15? Did I hack that in too?
then im wrong, i skipped ahead but didnt watch every second
Ar you still playing???
No, I recorded this during the open beta.
We need updated content 😢 still nice to see though
At this stage I guess we'll just have to wait for the final game.
@Roving_Sentinel yeah your probably right I just need something to scratch that itch 😞
You and me both.
@@Roving_Sentinel Suffering we all are. On multiple channels I've heard the phrase "Kicked out of the Garden of Eden". There's never been a game that makes me angry sigh every time I remember that I can't play it yet.
I'm feeling the withdrawals. But I'm also glad that Capcom are using feedback from the Beta to make adjustments to the game... Still feeling withdrawals though 🤣
Thank you watching my video! All build information can be found towards the end of the video. Just a quick explanation of a few things... 00:25 I cut out the first minute or so of this hunt. The reason being... it was boring. The Longsword user and I just run around for a bit, trying not to get squashed. 01:21 I'm just flying about doing a bit of chip damage to Kulve Taroth's coat here while I wait for the floor to not be literal lava. It does next to no damage, but I'm trying to be somewhat constructive. 06:22 I always bring support boosters in multiplayer, just in case. But I'm pre-emptively deploying them now because I know things are about to get really firey, really quickly. They ended up saving me from Fireblight not long after I put them down. 08:37 The build I use is mainly geared towards multiplayer. The single player version has a few more comfort skills. However, as much as I love my fellow Hunters, I REALLY need Flinch Free when I'm online.
No... we can't jump around like Shingeki anymore 🥲
They've restored the "bounce" on the Jumping Advancing Slash since the open beta version, so technically this footage is no longer representative of what the final product will be. I had fun capturing this though.
@Roving_Sentinel Nice 🫡
Ps4?
This is the Steam version.
Love the gameplay!
Thank you!
nice moves and combos
Thank you.
