Building a Granite Flagstone Walkway in Geodesic Dome | Garden Harvest
Hello Everyone and happy Harvest season. In this video as you can guess we are harvesting more from our outside garden, making some lovely homemade Tomato Basil Soup and cleaning up the garden beds for fall. We have been doing a lot of yard clean up, landfill runs grabbing straw for our chickens and watering in trees for winter. We also are prepping our beds for our Fall Hard Neck Garlic Planting.
We have finished our Granite flagstone and pebble walkway in our 26' Geodesic Growing Dome purchased from Arctic Acres. The Geodome is starting to look complete and like a jungle. Our citrus trees are flourishing and the banana tree has doubled. We have harvested plenty of cucumbers, tomato's, herbs and peppers from the dome so far in the first 4 months since building. We also talk about some of the negatives about purchasing our Geodesic dome through Arctic Acres. We are still happy with the dome and we love it however their are a few things the company could do to make the dome builds easier and less confusing.
We have also been watching the season change right before our eyes to the most beautiful colors of yellows, golds and every shade of red. We were blessed with a few nights of the Northern Lights and the girls finally got to stay up late and enjoy them.

    For your question with air intake freezing, maybe you should put it inside a chicken coop, to take warm air from inside?

  • @paweskorecki3247
    @paweskorecki3247 Місяць тому

    I would say that you should add an insulation. I have small chicken coop for 5 chicken (1,5mx1,5mx1,5m size) and I have insulation 5cm and temperature inside is always 8-10C higher than outside without heating. So in my region (Poland) where we do not have so big frost ( sometimes lower than -10C) adding 5cm insulation was enough to keep chickens in winter without heating at all. But on your side adding insulation would help to keep higher temperature, maybe electricity would be enough then.

    • @AlbertaAdventurerFamily
      @AlbertaAdventurerFamily Місяць тому

      We do have insulation but we find we like to keep our coop about -10c at coldest. We like our girls to stay happy. Also we found with our coop and the open bottom the deep litter method helped to insulate the coop as well. It was our first winter with chickens and we learned a lot.

    If its -40F outside and 55F inside, 50kbtu will be just enough.. The dome surface heat loss will be around 40k btu/hr, uninsulated perimeter adds another 7,600 btu/hr.

    Hi guys, I'm currently in the process of acquiring land and build a wooden dome as the primary structure in northern Alberta, near Edmonton. I'm wondering how did you managed the building permit? Is it a lot of money to pay an engineer/architect?

    • @AlbertaAdventurerFamily
      @AlbertaAdventurerFamily Місяць тому

      hey the permit process was not fun and with artic acres we had engineered drawings however they were stamped by Canada and Alberta required an engineer to stamp as well from the province. We spend a few grand on the permit process and land surveying. Are you building a DIY Dome or have you purchased a kit? Also that is awesome that the dome is what you are starting with. We would love to buy some land to start over and go completely off grid north of Edmonton as well.

    • @audenwu2120
      @audenwu2120 Місяць тому

      @AlbertaAdventurerFamily A few grand for permit sounds horrifying honestly. Only think the raw material foe the dome will be around 5k. And I'm thinking of building DIY acidome and Paul Robinsons bevel method. But with the land price atm I'm still on the fence lol. Btw if you are starting a new one I'm happy to help. I think there's a listing 77k for 10 acres just an hour north from the city

      @AlbertaAdventurerFamily Місяць тому

      We would build a 44f dome from Arctic acres we love the 26 but the more growing space you have the better I would not attempt to build one from scratch the kit was good and easy to build. I consider myself good at building things from scratch and this if I had to build it myself would have taken 6-10 time longer it’s pretty complicated when you have 4 dident sized triangles and all the angels. Well worth the kit for $26000 and 2 months of my time after work every day. Thanks for the offer if we do move out north farther I’ll give you a shout!👍✨

      Hello and these greenhouses are supposed to be great for our northern climate also snow and wind. The issue comes with what you want to grow in those cold months. Cold crops apparently survive with no supplement heat; however we have chosen to go with some tropicals so we are striving to keep greenhouse above 10c in mid winter. I would recommend installing vertical perimeter insulation. Without it, the heat has a direct pathway out of the greenhouse via the gravel base and the ground.

      Thanks we may have to do that.

    • @JohnGuest45

      @@AlbertaAdventurerFamily It wont be easy to retrofit but is worth doing especially with temperatures down to -50 :). I`d opt to remove the exterior rocks and gravel and install wing insulation which is basically a skirt of rigid insulation that slopes away from the dome. Vertical perimeter insulation requires less material but will involve digging a relatively deep trench around the dome. Something else you may not have considered is the north wall triangles that have reflectix on them effectively block the light so you could fill those triangles with rigid insulation to further reduce heat loss. The insulation value would increase from R2.8 to at least R 17. In an extreme climate, every little helps :)

    Did you finish the loft on the steel building?

    • @AlbertaAdventurerFamily
      @AlbertaAdventurerFamily 2 місяці тому

      Well depends on what you call finish. Yes it is usable and we use it for seasonal storage but it is not a livable loft if you know what we mean. We have not put a railing on it but that’s it. It works great for what we need. We will have to show it in one of our upcoming videos

      Oh it’s still there and in the plans however food is important to us in this crazy world we are living in. We have actually thought of making the Winnie into a hip camp for people to stay in. We honestly love the Winnebago and can’t wait to get working on it again in the future.

    I like the idea of cedar for finishing your gardens - will tie in nicely with roof framing / struts - I see others have done half round logs - that's my vote - wife likes cedar too so that's two votes cedar haha - We love heading to Devon as well, almost bought there because we like the river access so much - Brian

      I never thought of using ruff cut good idea. With the price of cedar we might have to go this route we will see. We are keeping our eyes peeled for a good deal as we will need a bunch. Devon is an amazing place to live we love going there for family fun. Thanks for the great input!✨
