Civic Si w/ JDM B16A Track Day Shakedown - MSR Houston CW - 5th Session Full
Переглядів 512 роки тому
Shaking off the rust and shaking down the car a bit more. This is the full 5th session shakedown with some lead follow with Anthony B in his TT S2000 and Pedro in his NB Miata. I wasn't running as quick as I was expecting, and it might be heat, it might be the RT615K tires, or it may just be me being super rusty. Either way every session was an improvement so that's all I really cared about. Th...

7ft lbs is what my manual says for the valve cover bolts on a d16z6 1.6. FYI
Would be great if they gave you the exact depth to drill down to so as not to go too deep or too shallow.
Agreed! What I did was measure it, then I marked my tap bit with a black sharpie, but you probably can't see it in the video.
Wouldn’t it be easier to get the caps, I’m in the same boat lol
For sure! That would have been the backup solution if the fix was a fail. This was the budget friendly solution to go with initially ;). Good luck!
never knew now i know thanks !
What size heli coil do i need for my 2002 honda civic ex cant find the specs anywhere
I imagine all those SOHC valve covers were all interchangeable from 1992 to even 2002 but the easiest way to validate would be to pick up a tap and die kit and use the thread measurement tool to measure the pitch on your VC bolts. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same heli coil size.
Just got an AP2. Any issues with lifting from the notches closest to the front wheel well as opposed to the second set of notches closer to the door?
In the video if you look right around 0:18 you can see the front block is on the front set of notches closest to the front wheel.
@@thebudgettrackjunkie thank you! I wasn’t too sure with my 5000TLX but I’ll give it a shot again.
@@ronfromportland I'm not sure if the new TLX models are slightly longer now for longer wheelbase cars...so yeah just make sure....my older SLX is for sure perfect fitment for the S2000.
@@thebudgettrackjunkie yeah I actually just read that the TLX is 6” longer.
@@ronfromportland yeah i'd be interested in seeing if your QJ fits almost exactly b/t the wheels on your S2000. If so, I think the TLX is a better upgrade, i'm limited on using my SLX on some cars I've tried to work on where it was just not long enough.
Hey guys can this cause a rough idle for an 08 civic 2 stripped bolts.
I'm not a certified technician or anything so don't take my word for it, but I believe that if the valve cover is not completely sealed due to stripped bolts it can potentially affect oil pressure and some oil loss that can possibly cause a rough idle.
@@thebudgettrackjunkie thanks for the quick reply yeah i changed a lot of the sensors and nothing i also changed the throttle body nothing i changed all spark plugs and the coils too and the little valve at the edge of the block that goes to the intake and the maf.........no change at all.....im going nuts and it throws the missfire code and the idle higher than expected.....im going yo try and rethread with a decent kit thanks again man!
@@oscarreal9163 Good luck!!!
Yessir
Literally happened to me when the opposite corner bolt had broke and I had to extract it. Damaged the thread since it was my first time. Exact same engine too. The z6 which is bomb btw Thanks man I can do this now instead of getting a new block
Good luck!!!
Thanks a lot!
So I tried using en extractor because I over tighten that exact bolt and it broke. And the extractor didn’t really help and now I’m stuck with the bolt on the wall of the threads and the whole middle of the bolt is gone. What should I do? Please anything helps🙏🏽
If the extractor didn't help, you may have to drill out the rest...but don't exceed the drill bit size needed for a proper thread insert...if possible.
Yo did you end up using this helicoil inserts or what did you do. I'm basically done the same thing you did by drilling out the middle.
Such a gorgeous car. The color combo is stunning
hi, what lma do you put?
I replaced with the Skunk2 LMAs
@@thebudgettrackjunkie thank you
Sick wheeling out there! Man I wish my EG could keep up with a S2000
I couldn't really after a while, he's a great driver and he just kept pulling away

Your Quick Jack is backwards. The warning plate should face the heaviest end (engine). Are you not able to align the jack points the other way around?
That was way back when I first got it. I've since been using it correctly. Nice catch on that!
I can't find anywhere in the manual where the heaviest end must be on the label side. Even the safety label has a diagram of a car being lifted "backwards". Also, the s2000 has a 49-51 (F:R) weight distribution so technically where the engine is isn't the heaviest end =]
@@cdoan82 There’s no mention in the manual. It’s just an observation from watching several YT videos of the jack struggling to lift the vehicle when positioned “backwards”. See ua-cam.com/video/FDpdHSkuHy0/v-deo.html
i have two stripped holes but luckily no leaks. can't wait to try this.
Good luck!!
This worked on my D16Y8. Previous owner/s pulled two of the threads, so the valve cover leaked at the corners. I used an OEM Tools kit from Autozone, however.
That's great! Yes, since this video, i've acquired better tools for this job.
thats where if you had used oil your swarf would have attached to the drill bit
That's a great point! I've actually done several other repairs on other parts and i've used oil on the drill bit for lubrication, and the shavings do stick, but i'm still fine cleaning with a cotton swap after.
Does the little tang break off and if so can you get it out?
You can if you have tweezers small enough to reach, or get creative with some tape at the end of a thin screwdriver
Coarse or fine? I swear it's fine not coarse
pretty cool
This is an operation for sure. Look like a dentist
What about using a clear plastic cup and poke a hole through to capture the metal shavings...🤔 All 5 of my REAR valve cover bolts are stuck in there😭😭
I'm sorry to hear that man. But I don't think you want to poke all the way through. You might cause yourself other potential problems and leaks. Just my opinion.
That should work as long as you tape it similarly to how he taped the towel in this vid. I imagine it would be easier with the cup in harder to reach areas. Just might have to vacuum out the shavings from the cup before you pull it off or you’ll risk shavings falling back thru the hole when pulling it off
It is too small for my 2020 Civic.
They have newer models that support longer wheelbases now.
Will try this eventually .I had bought a 94 civic d16z6 and apparently all but one threads are stripped n need retapd it do be leaking oil lol
Good luck!
What happens when the ball joint goes bad?
Any number of things such as excessive play, vibration, clunking noises, uneven tire wear...
🤣literally. I like watching spins when no damage of course. I’ve posted a few (ahem) of my own and I’ve had the pleasure of a few of them being at that track as well 😆 Keep safe out there! Edit: at THAT track
Thankfully it was very light traffic so I had a bit of wiggle room ;)
I have the same engine as you is m6x1 the size for the hexi coil?
Assuming the same engine that should be correct.

What is a "tang" and what did it mean by "break of the tang"? Great video by the way. Thanks
When you look at the helicoil there is a a small piece of it that will need to be broken off once installed, it will automatically break off when you run a bolt through it after its installed into the newly tapped hole. That's just how that piece was described to me, i'm unsure if "tang" is the official term for it. Hope that helps!
So bad ass bro!!! -tatays96taco ;-)
Put down some good lap times! Great vid!
Thank you! Hoping to get back out there with the new setup to see how different the car will be.
@@thebudgettrackjunkie you going to tnia this coming week? I’ll be there!
@@2FIRacing i'll likely be doing the April TNIA event.
I'm wondering.... do you need to drill out the entire thread length of the bolt or can you stop when you've drilled the length of the helicoil?
I'm sure you can get away with drilling the length of the helicoil, but i'd also think you'd want to get the helicoil in a little deeper than just flush with the surface? Personally I did what I felt was the length of the bolt. You can probably even stack helicoil inserts if you wanted the entire length with new threads?
Beautiful lap and track
Thank you sir!
Great lap great balance
Great lap 🙌 I can't wait until winter is over so I can hit the track again !!!!
Thanks man! I'm definitely thankful for Texas "winters" lol
😍😍😍😍
couldnt you just use a 1/4 drill bit and whatever tap and take a,bolt notch it at the end to drive it in? Because i bought an assorted set with no install tool
You could probably do that, this is just the way I preferred because I wanted everything to be as oem and easy to work on in the future.
how come i just found out about yout channel! another eg track built!! keep up the great work brother!
HAHAHA I'm just a small grassroots guy with passion for cars too! Thank you and awesome content on your side as well!
Great race mate, ae86 is a beast 😁
Porsche in 86 clothing lol
That race was actually a lot of fun.
Agreed!!!
What group did you run in, i feel like i just ran intro traffic the whole first and second session
I was running advanced group, and was hitting lots of traffic too from time to time
I still haven't been to Harris Hill.
When your new track car is ready, let's make it happen!!! You'll love the course.
I also have a d16z6 head. Would the threads be the same for the front of valve cover and the back? If so will the tap in the description work for me? Thank you for the video.
I believe so, should all be the same pitch. If you have a tap and die set you can easily measure, but I believe it is the same.
@@thebudgettrackjunkie okay, thank you for the info.
Nice replay mate, good race 😉👍
Going to attempt this method tomorrow on a f23
Good luck! Be patient!
Budget Track Junkie worked like a charm!! Thank you so much!!
@@aq305 Glad to hear it worked out!!
Will this work for power steering ?
Will this kit work on D16y7
I'm assuming pitch and thread size is the same but you might want to make sure
ill be attempting this in the next few weeks after my car comes from the paint shop. noticed it leaking oil around the valve cover. we went to change the valve cover gasket to find out my left bolt is stripped on the valve cover. im pretty confident this is causing it slowly seep and leak oil out.
Good luck!!! That definitely sounds like the cause of your leak though.
Nice replay mate, good race 😉👍
