Ageing in place in cities - Manchester Urban Aging Research Group
Ageing in place in cities
What does an age-friendly city look like?
‘Age-friendly’ cities aspire to be places where people of all ages feel involved, valued, and supported with infrastructure and services that meet their preferences, needs and aspirations (World Health Organization). However, age-friendly will mean different things to different people, and it will require different approaches and priorities in different cities.
The Ageing in Place research project is exploring how cities can meet the needs of the diverse range of older people to become more age-friendly. The research is drawing on insights from Akita, Bilbao, Brno, Brussels, Manchester, Oslo and Québec. The project relies on collaborations with many stakeholders across the seven cities, these include officers from local councils, community and private sector organisations, researchers from a range of institutions and older residents in the cities.
As part of the Ageing in Place project, we asked older people what ‘age-friendly’ meant to them. This film shares some of what they said.
The older people in the film are residents of their cities, volunteers at community centres, members of older people boards and recipients of age-friendly services. Their views and opinions represent a diversity of experience and involvement in age-friendly cities and communities. We hear in the film about transitions into retirement and older age, the desire to be useful and take part in activities, and the need for services that meet their changing needs. We also hear about changing urban environments and what this means for people ageing in cities.
Across all the cities older people have stories to tell and experiences to share. The key message the film shares is that to make cities great places to age, the voices of older people must be central.

Excellent presentation by the Advisory Group members. The stats presented by Sarah and the literature review really puts the practical presentations of this art project into perspective. It also shows the importance of what has been mentioned and spoke about by the interviewees. It is interesting to see and hear that the experiences of women are not connected to the policies which are supposedly here to help them!

Ridcolously sexist approach by Debora Price.... The data actually shows its male professions that have highest mortality.... e.g. security guards, taxi drivers... nurses have a low mortality rate!! Also 94% of the uk doctors who died were male.... yes 94%!! This was in part due to male drs from e.g. orthopaedics being redeployed to deal with COVID in frontlines e.g. ICU, ED, while female drs in e.g. paediatrics were not... The mortality of male nurses is far higher too.... also care homes are gendered? YEs they are because most men are dead before they reach them hence they are filled with women! In part due to massive underspending and focus on mens health.... only four countries in world have mens health policies... despite every single country on earth have a womans one and usually multiple plus womens healt department, ministers etc (despite women having far better health - more men die in all 12 leading causes of death) In 2017 the UK’s Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies replied to requests stating that she had no plans to conduct an annual report into men’s health, despite having published a detailed and extensive annual report into women’s health strategy in 2015

A fine scholar, also down-to-earth and progressive, who died much too young. Her two main books made an important contribution and are still read. As a speaker too she had presence, so much so that the memory of her remains fresh even after all these years. A chapter she contributed to 'Demystifying Social Statistics' by Evans, Irvine and Miles (1979) was on opinion polling and its growing influence. In the process of analysing the issues, she considered the question-wording presented to voters in the Referendum on UK Membership of the EEC in 1975. She showed how so many variations of question-wording had been market-tested beforehand to arrive at the most likely to achieve the politically desired answer for those powerful enough to have been in the position to have determined that. It was a revelation at the time, explained with beautiful simplicity, and yet all these years later what the question-wording for any poll or survey is remains crucial and often proves the cause of controversy.
