We hope to inspire you, not to follow in our footsteps, but to create your own! This channel goes out of its way to find the path less traveled. Showing that you do not need a bank breaking rig & gear to explore the amazing areas this world has to offer. Once in remote locations we share with you our experiences of hiking, learning about history, fishing, beer-ing and camping.
Overlanding the GRAND CANYON [North Rim, Camping Cliffside & No One In Sight. Epic Overland)
Grand Overland finally does the Grand Canyon! After hiking to The Wave in Arizona and waking up in the beautiful White Pocket, Vermillion Cliffs, we made our way down to US 89A, then turn onto Buffalo Ranch Rd continuing this epic overlanding trip. This trail leads straight down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, an overlanding dream. It is about 25 miles and rather desolate. There are plenty of campsites along the way and could make for a decent overnight spot when in a pinch, but our goal is something a little bit more spectacular. Things go from bland to extraordinary in the blink of an eye when you T-bone the monstrous gash in the earth that is the Grand Canyon. The next trail hugs the rim for about 3 miles. This alone was worth the drive. There are a handful of campsites to choose from, each one seems better than the last, but all have a fantastic view of the canyon. I decided to go with the very last one at the end of the road. This gave me almost 360° views of the cliffs and canyons surrounding me, as it is perched out on a pinnacle, almost hanging above the earth. No matter how many times you have seen pictures or documentaries about this place, actually being there in person is just about life changing. It was well into the 100s, so a Trails & Cocktail segment was a must to cool off and relax. After that I just enjoyed a colorful sunset, causing the reds and oranges to pop in the surrounding cliff faces. Overnight the desert came alive, mostly with the sounds of ground owls. At first, I thought it was just one and then eventually lost count. They were absolutely everywhere. The sunrise the next morning was unforgettable and a great way to start the day. Taking a walk along the rim provides many different views, chances to see wildlife and stoic plants. Down below in the mighty Colorado River, rafters cruised by. I must admit I was jealous; pulling up to a beach and enjoying a beer while cooling off sounded amazing. This was a short trip, but being able to overland to a campsite like this is why I built my off-road rig. The trails here are rather easy and just about any Jeep, Tacoma, Wrangler, 4runner or any 4x4 should not have a problem making it. If you have ever thought about seeing the Grand Canyon, but like me, didn’t want to deal with the crowds of the overgrown tourist spots, this trip is exactly what you are looking for when it comes to your next overlanding and camping adventure. And remember, what's your GOL?

In the last episode you watched us take on The Wave in Arizona at night using an alternate route, The Notch Trail. Well after getting back to the truck in total darkness a campsite needed to be found. Continuing down House Rock Road, we turned onto Pine Tree Pocket Trail to the very end and found a place to call home around 3am. Little did I know at the time, we ended up right in the heart of W...

Sometimes when overlanding you have to stop and take advantage of where your 4x4 has taken you. In this case I did so in the form of a hike, I get exhausted just typing the word, but this isn’t any old hike through the desert, this hiking trail leads to THE WAVE in Arizona. This video is not my typical overland content, but rather shows off what parts of the world overlanding opens up to you. I...

@grandeoverland6787 Do you have a link for the other channel? Having trouble finding it.
@@stevesmith3556 It hasn't launched as of yet. There is a video, but haven't made it available yet. @hookedonhawaii
Nice video brother, I am getting a 1Kw battery setup plus a 310w solar panel
@@danidel_Inc With 300+ watts on tap, you won't have to worry about much, even if it's a little overcast. That's a good move. Thank you for watching the video.
Getting stuck on purpose?
Yes...so if needed, go ahead and give me a hard time. There was reasoning behind it. During that trip I had a little bit of a sponsor and I had gotten the Action Trax from them and I needed to show case their recovery ability on a video. I knew that area was muddy, but only thought the truck would sink a little in 2WD and it would be no big deal. Didn't plan on the whole passenger side going down to the frame rail. So, 100% my fault for making a silly move. But, in the end, those recovery boards did show they work when in a pinch, so I suppose it workout in the end.
That’s the old wagon road that connected Durango and La Plata County to Silverton. It became an auto road as well in the early 20th century. Other than the train it was Silverton’s only connection to the south until the current higher altitude year round highway was completed after WWII. A beautiful drive in the fall with color change. Great camping where the road finally reaches the level of Lime Creek at the bottom. As a Jeep trail rate it a 2.5-3 on the ten point Moab scale.
I should have talked to you before putting out the video! Would have been great to include the history of the trail. Always seems to make it a little more special. I 100% agree, that area during the fall would be absolutely stunning. It is on the list for a future return trip. Thank you for watching and the extra info.
Hey man just wondering how the road to the trailhead was as you remember? I have a 2wd and want to hike up to the lakes but don’t wanna get stuck way back there
@@samvonschrader5201 You would be totally fine until the 1 gate keeper. You saw my truck struggle pretty bad on that obstacle in 4L. Depending on what you are driving, it could possibly be done, but I don't want to put you in a bad position. There is another trailhead at the very beginning where you can leave you ride, or just your vehicle as far as you are comfortable and leave it at an empty campsite. Hope this helps and you have a great trip.
Beautiful Trek to God's Country! How was the fishing? What species did you catch in the lake? ... in the creek?
@@garyrafferty7625 I couldn't describe it in a better way. In the lake at the end, there are a lot of brook trout, with some rainbows and browns scattered throughout. Usually the fish there are pretty hungry!
I love seeing this rig in action! See you on the trails! 😜
Not as exciting as the trails you are used to but hopefully still entertaining!
Several times over the years, we drove to the end of the road, parked, and turned left and traversed a talus slope to reach Kennebeck Pass. There is a mining ruins after a short climb from a parking area (it is accessible by high-clearance vehicles from hwy 160, via La Plata Canyon Road). The northward views from the parking area are some of my favorites of the SanJuan range. Also, the 4WD road continues up a shelf road to “The Notch” with incomparable views of N. Durango.
Thank you for the extra info about the area. Just wish I was back over there so I could put it to use. Knowledge is key and it sounds like you have plenty of it.

LIme Creek Road was once the main road from Dgo (Durango and Silverton, hence the guard er, walls?

@@Freepowder Wowza, guessing the trail was a little more hairy back then.
@@grandeoverland6787 Probably not. Probably in better repair as it was the major freight route. Would have been mule trains and/or wagons. Before that the Utes used it. The "guard rails were put in by the Civilian Conservation Corps. in the 1930s.
@@grandeoverland6787 Not really. Originally it was a trail used by the Ute Nation. Then it was a supply route for Silverton & Durango. At that time it would have been mule trains and/or wagons. In the 1930s the 'guard blocks' were put in by the civilian conservation corps.

Hey great video. I bought a Starlink Gen 3 and wanted to use boondocking with an Ecoflow Delta 2 with Ecoflow extra battery. The combination supposedly offers 2048 Wh. The Gen 3 reportedly uses 100 W. When I used them together only got about 4 hours or so. Seems to be too low. Am I thinking correctly? Thanks.
If I am reading this correctly, you have over 2000 Watt Hours and only got 4 hours of use out of your Starlink? Was anything else plugged into your Ecoflow? That is really low. If the draw is 100W, then it still should only have used 400W in those 4 hours. On the screen of the Ecoflow, can you see what the average(ish) power draw is? Something just seems off.
@@grandeoverland6787 Thank you. Yes I need to retry the whole set up and see if it happens again.
Look into your StarLink settings - if it was cold out it may have been Heating the dish (which is used to keep it clear of ice/snow). I find mine can turn on well above freezing.
Is there parking for trailered vehicles at the trail head? I’ll be in the area this June.
If I remember correctly there are 2 gravel lots that should work well for a trailer at the beginning of the trail.
Looks hot! But nice views 😊
Yay! Dane!
Thanks for taking a break from watching hockey to give my video a peek
Apparently you can shave off 15-30% power usage by going direct DC instead of the inverter route, might be an option as there's a 12v DC jack on the battery pack that you could use if you wanted to squeeze the most from it. Its very messy/fiddly with adapters and boosters tho. This is a good out of the box solution.
You are right, switching to DC seems to be the way to go if you need every watt to count. Really is too bad Mr. Musk did include an adapter with the original kit.
@@grandeoverland6787my starlink RV requires AC, won’t run off DC. So not sure if that’s an option. Turning the Starlink to sleep mode does help a bit though.

Awesome petroglyphs… just don’t touch them, it can ruin them. For the “poor dog” comments, that dog is loving his life. Have you never owned one before? They BREATHE when it’s hot… crazy, I know…. It’s how they cool their bodies down. It’s perfectly normal for that dog to be hot while hiking. I would be more worried if he wasn’t…
Don't you worry, neither one of us got any closer to the petroglyphs than that. Wouldn't dare touch artifacts. Wish other people were as respectful. And you were very right about my dog, he was totally fine. We were only 15 mins from the car, the sun was about to set and he had all the water he wanted.
