Javed Jabbar is an example of what blind patriotism will do to the mind of an otherwise intelligent & knowledgeable man. He is saying that the West Pk govt of the time should be praised, for blacking out all news of atrocities against West Pakistanis, in East Pk. The West Pk junta blocked all news from the East, right up till the day of surrender, so much so that many West Pks, even on that day, thought that Pakistan was winning the war. As such, it seems logical that their motivation was simply to avoid blame for losing control of law & order in the East, and to also avoid being held responsible, by West Pakistanis, for failing to protect their families and loved ones. They simply maintained, from autocratic instinct more than anything else, a false image of 'everything under control in the East' till the last possible moment; the geographical separation and the media tech of the time allowed for this.

As a Pakistani I will say only one thing, if west Pakistan has to send army personnel to east instead of having the support of local Bengalis then this war was already lost even before it was started
