@@Radio478 Brilliant, thanks for commenting - glad you found it useful 😁
Wow !!
Thanks for your comment - glad you liked it 😁
Another 'time honoured' way I've used on occasions is to gently tap the end electrode with the handle of a screwdriver or similar, which tends to give more control than pressing it against a hard surface. I've had the same set of Champion N9YC in my Minor Traveller for years now, and it still starts and runs well!
@@FMFGUF you must have a good clean and well serviced engine 👍 The more modern sparkplugs aren't so good unfortunately, so I should stick with your trusty ones if you can ☺️ How do you clean them?
🎉Brilliant

A dab of white or yellow paint on the 3 points of the timing marks and the notch on the pulley makes the much easier to see. It also helps greatly if using a strobe light!!
@@mikerostock3229 That's a good idea 💡 Luminous maybe 🤔
Brilliant. Just bought a 71 Traveller first Morris for me finding your information and videos to be really excellent, simple and straight forwards. Very helpful. I assume we still time at 3 BTDC statically if we fit electronic ignition kit instead of the traditional points?
@@simoncrest5354 Welcome to the Morris Minor world and thank you for your comment. So if you change the distributor you will need to redo the timing as this involves taking the clamp off. With electronic distributors, you can use static timing to set the initial timing but I know that then people tend to use a strobe to then fine tune the timing. I don't know if you have visited our website, but there's lots of other Morris Minor related information on there: blindmanmorris.com
And we would suggest getting a decent distributor - it's pretty vital to your Morris - spend to save ❤️
Indication about the clutch wear, ... Superb !! Thanks from 🇳🇱 Holland 🇳🇱
So glad you enjoyed it and found it useful 😊👍
Superb explaination, ... I saw somewhere here on UA-cam a bloke using a mirror underneath the car to check the marks. Could you explain a bit how the car is running when it's to far ahead in timing or to far behind ? I have the idea that the engine might run very rough or hardly have any power when it's not on time. "Hartelijke groeten" from The Netherlands. (Kindly regards)
Hello, thanks for your comment 😊 The simple answer is that if the timing is out either way the car will sound terrible. Some people make adjustments by ear and it is based on when it sounds like it is running at it's best. You do of course need to make sure that everything else is working OK 👍
Oh also, if you were doing this task on your own, a mirror is the way to go. The whole task is easier with two 😊👍
Had to do mine the other day, as the belt started squealing with the headlamps on. You should have approx. 0.25" 'slack' on the longest section of belt. Mine was on about 0.5".
@@FMFGUF Yes quite right, the manual says 0.5" of lateral movement at the midpoint position of the belt between the crankshaft pulley wheel and the water pump pulley wheel.
Have you done one on the torsion bar adjustment? The rear of my Traveller is a bit low. Thanks Shaun
@@shaundorney5342 Hello Shaun, thanks for your message and email. We haven't done a video on that yet. However is the ride height different from one side to the other or just at the rear? It might be worth looking at your rear springs if it is both sides.
@ thanks. Yes it seems to be both sides. I took it to a suspension place and they said they could look at the springs retensioning but I suspect it may be that torsion bar adjusting plate that has different holes in it that needs to be looked at as well. Love your channel- thanks very much
@shaundorney5342 How about measuring the distance between the rubber bump stop and trunnion on the front of both sides and see if it is the same? Then have a look at the distance between the bump stop and the body of the car and see if there is a difference at the rear. This should help identify where the issue is. That may indicate whether it needs adjustment at the front or work doing on the rear springs 👍
Thank you I’ll check that out
That's a nifty tool! Of course you can set the points using the dwell function on a Gunsons test tune, or modern equivalent, or you can get your starting handle and use it to rotate the engine to bring the heel on the points to one of the lobes on the distributor shaft and set the points the traditional way. But that tool is going to save time and hassle especially if you are stuck on the side of the road (in the rain, in your best clothes probably!) and just need to get going again and on your way.
@@DaveLong64 Thank you, yes that was what it was intended for, to make side of the road points replacement quicker and easier. Shame they don't make them anymore! You can still get hold of them second hand luckily 😁
@@BlindManMorris I have now saved a search in Ebay .As despite being a bit of an old codger, I've never come across these before. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us all with your channel, its very much appreciated!
@@DaveLong64 Thanks so much, glad you are enjoying the videos 😊 the Remax tools do come up on a regular basis, so fingers crossed 🤞
I used to put the wheel nuts in the upturned hubcap, but what can happen is that you risk accidentally treading on the edge of the hubcap, and then due to its domed shape it becomes a very effective wheel nut 'launcher' catapulting them who knows where! (Don't ask how I know!)😐🤣
@@DaveLong64 🤣🤣Like you, I've learnt from experience, particularly as I can't see the hubcap! So I put mine inside the wheel that I have taken off. It's a good point and easily done 😲🫣
Very much appreciate the tutorial and an excellent excuse for me to buy a pressure sprayer 😁
@@cnat_sepll 😂😊👍well why not, always handy to have 👍
A useful tip for those (like me) who own cats.
@@andrewwhitehead2947 agreed
What is your opinion on the square type? Mine is near enough useless
@@cnat_sepll We also have a Morris Minor with a square heater and it's definitely not as good. You can replace the heater matrix inside the heater, or clean it out and that may make some difference. We always say we're going to do that and then winter arrives and we haven't done it 😂
@BlindManMorris will have a go, thanks
@@cnat_sepll We'll put a video up about it 😊👍
@@BlindManMorris nice one, I'll check it out when it's released :)
@@cnat_sepll It's coming out this evening - hope it's useful. We will probably be renewing the heater matrix at some point next year. If and when we do, we'll film that being done 👍
I had one built for my land rover by the distributor doctor. Very nice quality, worth the money over a cheap Chinese copy.
@@adamstab1 Thanks for your comment - we definitely agree 👍💯
I was once told to use Moss head gaskets as they are slightly thicker. Might be worth considering. I have one on my car.
@@workinprogress1098 Oh interesting idea - we'll have a look 👍
Well done you two. I started making my own service sheet, but your downloadables will be helpful to many, I'm sure.
@@workinprogress1098 thank you, hopefully they are useful - we also try to add new information on a regular basis, so there will be more printables coming!
Will be interesting to see if you feel the improvement in the car. 👍🏼
@@workinprogress1098 Thank you - the difference was instant. It starts up beautifully and drives smoothly. It's also very reassuring to know that there's a decent distributor under the bonnet!
It’s a thing of beauty
@@williamthomas5223 Thank you yes definitely 😁
Don't go backwards. To keep the timing chain taunt, turn the engine right around again until the timing mark and rotor arm are both where you want them. You'll also want to advance the rotor arm as you turn the distributor.
@@JohnDyer-j7y John you're absolutely spot on. We should have let it go round again 👍
It always bring a smile to my face when I see those seat bolts, reminds me of a garden gate, so agricultural 😂

@@williamthomas5223 We got a small heavy duty car cover which fits our four door saloon well. You'd probably need a medium for a traveller 👍
Thank you I've been looking at these.
What cover is this please.
@@smarks8447 Hello, it's the Halfords small car cover - it's about £50 and is lined.
Really useful video 👍 loving the inclusion of the faux pas’. I’ve conducted dry & wet compression tests on one of our cars and it’s been useful to compare against your reading 🤔 mine were 10 or so psi higher but I span the engine longer.
@@eggybreadplease thank you, yes that makes sense. We found spinning the engine for a long time didn't help the battery or starter. I guess it's about consistency across all 4 cylinders (assuming we can count to three consistently 😂😂)
