I have no idea how many laps the MAXX will do, but if they don't do a TJ Maxx theme and fill it with factory second Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirts, then they really missed a golden opportunity.

The MAXX is going to do a lot of laps limited mostly by the fact it will be 45 minute stints with mostly newbies driving it. It is BONE STOCK except safety and has a paltry 272,000 miles on it. What could possibly go wrong? It will be over 200 laps.

@@EveryoneRacers 264 laps despite close to 3 hours of lightning delays. No mechanical time off track though the transmission identified as $15 Walmart blender from lap one of test and tune and got no better or worse throughout the race...its a GM thing. FYI, the various Chrysler I6 flatheads run in Lemons from a 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe to a 2000 Ford Mustang all had the PTO port. At one time a certain team planned to run a supercharger off theirs but turbo-charging it was easier and made more through the hood protrusions.

Well, here - ua-cam.com/video/6W_0feufl_8/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared - For those that are not Mike, see, what happened was.... With the shutdown of Google podcasts, Google has redirected our RSS feed back to our UA-cam in addition to Apple Podcasts, and every other platform we can. At the same time, Spotify (formally Anchor, our original podcasts hosts, before it shut down and kicked it to Spotify) introduced a video option. I used to load the video straight to the feed and it would convert to audio only, but then it started keeping it as video. By the time we realized what was happening, we realized we have a lot of interaction with fans consuming our video podcasts on Spotify. So, now we load both options. The result is that it actually ends up back on UA-cam three times. The direct feed, the audio feed and the RSS video feed. Having said all that, what appears to have happened here, is that I loaded the audio version twice. Which, I believe technically known as... "D'OH!"

As Bad Decisions has a lot of newbies cycle through as part of our team "charter" and part of that is we really want to meet them at least once before we put them in our car so invariably most end up at one or more build days. More than 75% say something like "Don't expect much from me as the most I have ever done is XYZ." Many of them have more skills than they think but invariably they lack the hard won skill of approaching a problem from a creative angle. Watching that lightbulb go on in their head when they watch you use a 24" extension, breaker bar, 4' piece of roll cage tubing and jack stand to remove a harmonic balancer bolt that only requires 85 ft lb of torque to put on but a 3/4" air impact gun cannot remove...priceless! Similarly, showing them the 36" wobble extension and deep socket for upper bell housing bolts causes an aha moment. More than one DIY car maintenance addict has resulted including two former teammates getting their own race car.

As usual, the most important parts of a Gingerman race happened off the track. -The team with the Austin showed up with an Irish priest who ran the Irish Car Bomb stand at the potluck. I've never seen a grown man get blasted exclusively on car bombs in broad daylight, but I'm better for having witnessed it. -A team brought, and I shit you not, about 5 gallons of macaroni salad to the potluck, but they were like an hour late. I told them to wander around the paddock that night feeding the drunks macaroni salad since that would honestly be pretty sick. -THE GODDAMN NORTHERN LIGHTS. Only in a Lemons paddock will someone dressed as an astronaut come grab you at midnight to look at Aurora Borealis. -Do you have any idea how confused you can make a Jersey Mike's employee when you pick up a few crates of subs in a Jersey Mike and the Boys shirt?

I, too, drive an early-aughts F350 crew cab long bed 2wd, and I feel I must defend the honor of all Super Duties. Mine has the 5.4 two-valve (so no spark plug nightmares), and a sweet extra tall Leer camper cap that I snagged for $200. Aside from needing cam chains (bad tensioner) and a trans rebuild (leaking front seal), it’s been great. I get between 12-13 mpg. Or something like that. It’s best not to check. It’s great, it’s white, and we call it The Meg.

  • @andrewlemke9108

The spark plug extractor tool will indeed be needed if you do the sparkplugs. However to greatly lessen the chances of them breaking I would suggest either squirting some Kroil or Marvel mystery fluid down the spark plug holes and then drive the truck for a week. Then when you go to change them get the engine good and hot and work fast to crack them all loose. Running a decarbonizing combustion chamber clean also helps according to some so that may be worth a try as well. In either case you are almost guaranteed to break at least one so just accept the misery if you decide to do that job.

As some might imagine if they have met me, it is hard to pick just one janky story. Probably the worst is a favor to the co-owner of our race cars to go 8 hours away to pick up not one, not two, but THREE 1960's 3-door Suburbans plus two engines, a transmission and parts enough to fill the back of all of those 'Burbs. The comedy of errors that ensued coming home are all funny now but not at the time. One was driven (lost a wheel), one was loaded on my trailer (with both engines and the transmission) so the trailer promptly lost all running lights with the return trip 100% in the dark and the third was on our chief mechanic's trailer...slightly overloaded...we found out the integrated compression brake on his new truck could not be fully turned off causing epic trailer sway on each downhill.

The few times I've tried to use fiberglass it didn't go super well so I'm definitely not an expert. I know plenty of airplanes are built with foam core fiberglass construction, and all the airplane builders I know use West Systems as well. Far down my to-do list is making a foam core wing for the MX-3. As far as I know (but we've established that isn't very far) I should be able to make the foam core out of housing insulation cut with a hot wire, but we'll see how well that actually works.

So, along the thoughts of "They won't let me do the fuel"... We have 2 people we let do the fuel during a race. This is because when you are moving that much fuel that fast, we want to be careful. The dry breaks are very good, but they require you to correctly insert, and remove the cans, and then, even more important, when you pull one out that is not empty, it has to be handled correctly until is is back and sealed to prevent spills. For Grant (he was not there that weekend) or Blair (he was fueling at MidO) this stuff is now second nature. When we started the endurance game, this was not always the case, and penalties suck. Car-b-ques suck even more. Had you wanted to be the fire bottle guy, I am sure that should have been able to be worked out.. As far as working on the cars, anyone is allowed to clean the cars.. Now, when Ben and Carl start replacing engines. as you know, it's just best to get out of the way. Just make sure there is available beer, tools, and food. And it gets done. On the primary car, and most weekends on both, the guys from BimmerSpeed are doing the after race prep, and they have a system down, they know exactly what to check, what order they do it, and who is doing what. And since we are putting people other than ourselves in the cars, we choose to listen to the professional mechanics when they tell us what needs to be done to do it safely. On a side note, I am sure you have seen the sign: Mechanic rates: $45 per hour $55 per hour if you looked at it $65 per hour if you tried to fix it $75 per hour if you have an idea how to fix it $125 per hour if you help

I hope my comments didn’t come across as anything but gratitude for the opportunity, and respect for the professional operation y’all have and the fun I had hanging out with y’all again. I was just highlighting the mentality shift of coming from our style of “Why are sitting there!! Do something!” nature of our amateur crew. Despite the end result, and I hope I communicated enough that weekend. It was a great time. It was great seeing you guys again. Good luck on your continued success for the rest of the season.

@EveryoneRacers Oh, trust me, I get it. The thought change from Andy and I checking oil and torquing wheels on the vintage cars for 15 minute races "yeah, that looks ok, right?", to "these cars are being prepped for multi hour races with multiple drivers and every paint marked nut needs to be correctly checked every time" kinda process.. It is a completely different approach. And I really did understand what you were saying.

Short version: a Russian designed, Rolls Royce turbine-powered (built under license in Poland) helicopter I regularly flew in had a 20L oil drum with a foot pump operated by the door gunner's left hand when commanded by the copilot. The engine in question, if built in England, was recalled for a leaky oil seal...Polish-built and operated, not so much.
