Grass Car Racing In Wamic, Oregon
Переглядів 711Рік тому
Throughout the warmer months, grass car (riding lawn mower) races are held at the nations largest track of its kind in Wamic, Oregon. The races and parking is free. There is an establishment virtually next to the track that bills itself as a "Five Star Dive Bar". Food and drink is reasonably priced, and there is a race day menu. people/Sportsmans-Grass-Car-Racing-Inc/100057399162355/

Is someone who lives in Dufur a dufus?
Dufur, where JFK paraphrased a speech for his inaugural address. “Don’t ask what Dufur can do fer you, but what you can do fer Dufur.” I’ll see myself out 😂
I love the intro to this video! The peacefulness of nothing but a small engine airplane flying over and the river flowing by is really beautiful!
Toured all over that area. French Glen, and the back road, almost a trail, to the top of the Steens. The Alvord Desert. Soaked in the Hot Springs down there.
If you like colorful, check out the 24 WW11 murals on the hangar doors of the growing Prineville Airport
Heppner was named after my wife (Carrie Heppner) distant relative
Been out to Hat point a half dozen times. I think that July and August are the only times it is not drifted over. That road used to be dirt, then gravel. Now, in 2024 it may be paved. That road is one of the most inspiring... After roads end at about 7000 feet, there is a "trail" that leads down to the left. Supposedly it goes down to the Snake River. Too steep and tilted for me. :)
Used to be able to tell how animals were bred. I'm old and livin in the city. I have since forgot.
Mitchell used to have a resident black bear named Henry. I drive passed there five days a week, nice little town.
We took the time to go through the Cant ranch a few years ago, definitely worth the time.
As a Nevada desert rat, I really enjoyed this well produced video. My Dad was raised in North Powder, and during the summer of 1967, I fought wildland fires in the county. This video placed another area on my list to explore! Best regards, Terry
Most parts of the Great Basin are fantastic. This video mooved me to visit the Steens once again! Best regards from a Nevada Desert Rat!
If you really want those old lamps? I’ve got a hot deal for you. My in-laws recently passed Their home contained at least 200 of the lamps. At their memorial services we offered them free to all who wanted to take them. They spent years collecting. In Oregon btw.
Wool capital in Oregon ? I would make the case that was in fact Brogan Oregon . At its height there were 5000 people all earning a living from sheep . The old hotel is just a foundation now but in its day .....
Not that it is important, but back in the mid 60’s I was an occasional visitor to Shaniko. At the time the Hotel was occupied by retired sheep herders. In effect it was a retirement home for the old timers of the high desert range. Visitors like myself could eat with the residents in the cafe, around one big table, where the prepared food was served out of bowls on the table, and you competed for your share! There was one old timer who fancied himself to be the sheriff, and he let you know it as he patrolled the board sidewalks in town. Now in my mid 80’s...... those were great days 60 years ago in Central Oregon!
Very cool. The last time I was there was in the 70's. As I recall, it looked nowhere as nice as this
Nice 👍
We just went to Bend and Sunriver Oregon. Beautiful place
Stayed in the hote L in the 880,s😊
Wad actually hoping this would show some ghost towns, not video of driving thru small towns. The price of gas was .66 for 12.5 gallons... Shaniko, you showed some interesting photos...but Not a ghost town Overall, some interesting photos, but really No ghost towns
FROM START TO FINNISH IT TAKES ABOUT 8-9 HOURS TO DRIVE, IF GOING 55-60.. TAKE FOOD, EXTRA TIRES, WATER, TENT, ETC.. NOTHING REALLY TO SEE ...D
My Dad and his crew built that road in the middle to early 70's. I spent a lot of time in that country. It is a beautiful area for sure.
Maybe because u don’t know what it’s like
It's there jobs in that little beautiful town? I want to buy a land for my retirement?
theres jobs, yes.
Very cool. Thank you
thanks man. I really enjoyed that!
Shaniko ain't much, but it is not a ghost town. Some people like being away from the madness of busier places.
Fossil resident here: glad you had a nice stay! we are a poor community so I'm glad we weren't too bad. the restaurant at 17:34 was originally much prettier and local owned, it was recently bought. locals are not allowed and it's closed in the off season. lot's of beautiful land around us and great weather. we have been shrinking due to our remoteness, hours from any city. very tightknit local community. as far as i know, the courthouse tower isn't used for much, but the upstairs of the Museum often holds local gatherings and wedding receptions. it's a quite and remote village.
Wonderful varied desert landscape with several unforgettable experiences. I was there often between 2000 & 2007 & still hope to make it in 2025. Residing overseas makes visiting difficult but I am really aiming for next summer. At close to 10,000 feet (the highest point is on the south part of Steens a short walk from the parking area below. Swam once in Wildhorse lake below the summit & the trail down to it has hopefully been fixed a bit. A truly unique Oregon locale & not overrun by tourists the last I checked.
I hate the background music!! Fuckin pianos suck, don't you know that? I live and love in Central Oregon. The pictures are great!
I've always wanted to go on this tour, and through the area. You see I was born in Corvallis Oregon. I lived most of my life in central Willamette valley. My parents and grandparents are from Lewiston Idaho, so I always drove interstate 84 and passed the Dufer (and others) sign always wondering what's there. Now I know. Thank you so much for sharing this!
The price of gas at the abandoned gas station at 8:05 was 66 cents, not 12 cents. The last purchase was for 12 gallons of gas.
Yup, probably around late 70s when last in use.
Going in July 2024, can’t wait
nice shot
Something to think about when contemplating the leadership of the US. Every small town had a school. First build a church, then a schoolhouse!
My father spend some time in the area as a kid when he first started working in Glendale oregon and later we lived in Fortunate Branch just south of Wolf Creek. He grew up in the Jump Off Joe are in Merlin and down in the river where Zane Gray wrote some of his novels!
Nice video!
If there is a post office it's a good place to live 😊❤

It’s ironic that you’re in Prineville on the 4th of July. My Mom lives in Prineville, and the 4th of July is her birthday!
Shaniko is not a ghost town. It's just a small town. It has a functioning government, school, store, etc. I don't know why you big city folks are so fascinated with small towns. A "ghost town," by definition, is an abandoned town. Shaniko is anything but abandoned. Please stay in Portland and don't come to this side of the state.
Thank You Oregon Governors for destroying so many businesses during the illegal covid-19 lockdowns in this area. Only those few who stayed open survived, the irony!
Thanks for sharing all of these lovely moments. Great memories!
Thanks for the great video. I really enjoyed it! I'm fortunate enough to live smack dab in the middle of this beautiful country and have visited all these places any number of times including spending a couple of nights at the Balch Hotel in Dufur (where I was the only guest!) Love this country and feel blessed to call it home.
I had a chance to stay in the 'motel' in Shaniko. at 12:06. We were on a geology field trip checking out central Oregon. The next morning was Sunday, May 18th 1980. We were out in the field when a kind of sonic boom and shock wave was felt. Yes, Mt. St. Helens erupted! Our instructor predicted this would happen when we were out. It was overcast and we could not see the ash cloud. Later we were back in Salem and could watch TV and saw what happened.
You might learn to pronounce the names of the places your going, as a nearly 50 year resident of OR (Eastern, Western & Central) you lose all credibility when you mispronounce the words. Trying to be a tour guide & doing that makes you sound like an amateur. It's W(ah) mic.
Ok buster see if you can film and put out a video stop nitpicking he is doing a good job 👍
He pronounced Shaniko and Dufur right though. Be kind, tourism is the only reason Central Oregon isn't deserted!
Rush hour in Shaniko!
Thank you for this! I love Shaniko. I am going there this weekend
great song!
