Aphrodite and the Illusion of Beauty Standards
What is a more ideal starting point for our conversation about beauty - than the very embodiment of grace and desire? The captivating muse whose ethereal beauty has transcended time through writing, paintings, and sculptures? Aphrodite.
Much like Aphrodite, contemporary beauty norms are also ever-changing, shifting with the nuances of culture, time, and trends: What was once beautiful now no longer is - or what is considered gorgeous in one country is a deformity in another. If you look closely at each culture, you can see how often their beauty standards crash.
You might wonder what Aphrodite, a mythology character, has anything to do with what’s happening in modern times - after all, she is a myth, right?
But who’s to say that “beauty standards” aren’t just another myth?

There's a very questionable narrative being thrown online around as of lately: It implies that we must separate ourselves from the world, view our friends as obstacles, and retreat into solitude to become this perfect, idealized version of ourselves.. and only then will we be ready to live the life we have always deserved. This narrative may be seductive but it is dangerously incomplete. It's n...

The thing is gods and goddesses are not real. They are representatives of ideals. If such a real woman as depicted ever existed, with all the beautiful women in the world for the men to compare her to, even this goddess couldn't stack up. Pedestals are for stone. Not flesh and blood.

I don’t really understand your statement since many religions are polytheistic and the people who participate in those religions consider the gods and goddesses to be real and active beyond representing ideals. You sound like you’re a Reddit atheist instead of a cultural anthropologist.

Aphrodite and her statues are the reason why I haven’t given into the toxic beauty standards for over three years now; we have an extremely similar body structure and learning my feminine personality structure (the lover) made me fall more in love with myself and romanticize my similarities with Aphrodite. My friends now even say I give off Aphrodite vibes and I loveee it. I truly believe that ancient art could really heal modern femininity and our insecurities within our society because they look like women of all types of shapes and portrays beauty in many various ways. I’ve always been a fan on ancient cultures and sculptures but who knew they could also be my beauty inspiration in the future?? 💕

She has trouble with a lot of words and mispronunciation or saying the complete wrong word. She is confident, though probably undeservedly.

The biggest thing for me in the conversation about beauty is not whether or not it exists, but how we treat people who do not "have it". I think most people can agree there is some sort of standard, and criticize it, but most people end up reacting to how it influences one's life. While there is a unconscious element to this, I think of how "ugly men" can be perceived as creepy or how "ugly women" are ignored. A lot of people are invested in *how* beauty is used at the moment vs examining their own reaction to it day to day.

@crumbsintopebbles it's written in the international phonetic alphabet, which is used by linguists around the world to document accurate pronunciation of pretty much every language spoken on earth. Just because you didn't recognize it, doesn't mean it wasn't a valid or informative statement.

I think the first step would be to figuring out why you keep isolating yourself and working from there. For me, personally, I find that the desire to isolate myself comes from limiting beliefs I had adopted growing up. Ex. "They're gonna leave anyways so I might aswell leave first." or "I am afraid of getting hurt so I refuse to open myself up to people." By figuring out the root issue, I can work on why I have that belief and deconstructing that belief into one that's more healthy. I hope this helps you :)

This is so true. I myself was a ‚victim‘ of this mentality and I was so miserable, Even though I dont regret it in the long run, because i was able to cut off the most toxic people in my life… it could have been so much easier afterwards. More people should see this! I wish you the best! Thank you
