my senior year high school English teacher described it best as "y'all will enjoy this book, it is low vocabulary and high interest". by low vocabulary she meant you didn't need a dictionary (this is 1976) on hand to understand some words author used, the stories we liked had words which flowed like we talked, not like needing to be one with a PhD in literature to read it. one horrible book on our required reading list was Giants in the Earth, gawd what a long, slow, plodding, boring AF story. I could not get through it, I would fall asleep. I had to buy the cliff notes version to make up my book report on it which I did include my thinking it was really boring. I really like the Mortis tales, they are so well l written in a way which pulls me into the story, they flow so very well - admittedly I don't always grasp some of the hidden meanings or allegory behind some of the plots because I take things far too literally most of the time - and always leave me wanting more.
