Q&A: Roger Christian, Oscar-winning production designer & more
A CONVERSATION WITH OSCAR-WINNING PRODUCTION DESIGNER ROGER CHRISTIAN
In this special bumper-length episode of the Silver Screen Podcast, we’re joined by the legendary Oscar-winning production designer, Roger Christian, the mastermind behind some of the most iconic visuals in cinematic history. Prepare to journey back to the origins of the *Star Wars* and *Alien* franchises as Roger opens up about his groundbreaking work on these sci-fi classics. From designing and building the very first lightsaber to crafting the gritty, "used-universe" aesthetic that has become a hallmark of *Star Wars*, Roger shares behind-the-scenes stories that will thrill any fan.
Listen in as he recounts the challenges of bringing the *Millennium Falcon* to life, creating futuristic blasters from unlikely materials, and working alongside visionaries like George Lucas, Ridley Scott, and HR Giger. He also reveals the untold story of building a set for Sigourney Weaver’s screen test, defying studio executives to bring his vision for the Nostromo cryo chambers to the screen, and so much more.
But the conversation doesn’t stop there. Roger reflects on his early life, the spark that ignited his passion for film, and his formative years working on various UK-based productions. He also shares his experience as one of the few who believed in *Star Wars* from the very beginning.
As if that weren’t enough, Roger dives into the making of his almost mythic short film, the fantasy adventure that tantalized audiences before *The Empire Strikes Back*. And for all the aspiring filmmakers out there, he offers words of wisdom that are sure to inspire.
Tune in for an episode that’s as epic as the films Roger helped create. Whether you’re a die-hard sci-fi fan or simply curious about the magic of movie-making, this conversation is not to be missed!

Excellent review, a Labour of love I expect, but so well put together and informative. I thank you for your including credits for my online presence. I would add a bit from blog relating to "The Empire Strikes Back" The highlight of my involvement in this track was I was able to take our 6-year-old son to the premier of the movie The Empire Strikes Back and he saw all the actors who he only knew by their movie characters names. I am sure he was the only child in the audience. When the movie was over, Colin was at the bottom of the stairs of the theatre talking to various people. Behind him in the foyer were a huge line of StormTroopers As we arrived he asked our son, if he would like to meet the Stormtroopers. Speechless, Colin took his hand and took hm over to the line, I watched from a distance as they gave him several gifts including the most amazing Lightsaber. I can’t thank Colin enough for that night and his wonderful friendship during this time. Again thank you for all your hard work. All the best Kenny D
This was a great film and scary when I was a kid and I watched it many years ago after that still the best .always iked quatermass series in general..

Jerry is a brilliant man and has directed many attractions for DIsneyworld too! My family's favorite is his Disneyworld France Attraction "Cinemagique" which ran for perhaps 15 years. Thank you for giving him this 2 1/2 hour interview!
Thanks for having me on
*What's all the laughing about?*
It's Halloween. Good time for a nice cackle. Mwahahaha
Chinguen si madre con lo que sube.
It was nice to hear this thoughtful discussion of my all-time favorite horror movie. You guys shared some interesting insights and trivia about it! Thank you for the great show!
Thank you for your kind words. We're glad you enjoyed it. Always happy to hear from a fellow fan of the movie.
Thank you!
I actually remember watching this with my parents round about 1973, i was 8.
That must have been terrifying, at that age!
Interesting review of this great and still creepy film....the part about how the area had always been troubled and the houses that people won't live in really scared me watching this as a kid.
That element still gives me the shivers.
Thank you for inviting us on your show, DK! We had a good time.
Not at all. It was a pleasure chatting to you guys.
And the guests critiques of it.
Oh thank you so much! I'll pass on your compliment. Had you seen the movie before or did you watch it because of our podcast? Either way we're glad you enjoyed the episode and hope you'll stick around and try out some others maybe - Mike
Interesting podcast and I enjoyed the movie
Night Shift! Mr. Mom! Johnny Dangerously! Keaton was already a hit in my mind. :P
Good showing
DK always sounds so professional. 😊
Yeah, and yet he always doubts himself! I'm gonna claim a small percentage of the credit on this one for making him sound good when I edited lol
@@MarvelManMike82 ok, I'll give ya 18%.
I am an openly gay man who generally despises both musicals and media made by gay people for gay people... ...and yet inexplicably,I absolutely LOVE this f**king film. Go figure.
Seen the original when first released ,after that every year in Sydney the Movie Cinema would host a Rocky horror picture show theme night for years ,also seen 3 different Theater versions with 3 different hosts in Sydney many years ago
I remember when this came out. Speucal screening atidnight. Doors locked and everyone smoking weed. There are 2 edited versions, one for US and one for Europe. I have both on disc. 65 and still watch it a few times each year. The Only good thing Susan saradon ever did.
Does the UK version have Superhero or Once In A While? Because the US version sure as hell didn't.
@@AshtonRogers-se1zjUK has Superheros at the end, Once in a While got cut if I'm not mistaken
@@DruPaul-Beardslee Once In Awhile's absence from the film doesn't bother me so much, but the absence of Superheroes does. It makes no sense that it was cut,and even before I knew of its existence I knew that SOMETHING was meant to be there, because the transition is awkward and unnatural without it.
Every Halloween. ('After Phantom of the Paradise')
Do you ever throw Little Shop of Horrors in that lineup? Seems like a good fit.
Shawshanks still better ;)
Booooooo hahaha
No tienen peliculas de termineitor porque muestran puras porquerias
Stupid
Such a classic movie. I wasn't introduced to it until the 90s where some friends took me to a showing. Though it's been years since I have seen it, but it is so much fun.
Yo, uh... what was her name again?

Wonderful Actress and wonderful person!
Love Diane
Love this!
Yay!!
John Cuisak is more depressed than Lane This sucks Piss off I didn't want to hear that FUCK!
"Where's my two dollars - I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!!"___🚴💨
Favourite film franchise, despite my time travel comments haven’t gone down well with other friends 🥴
Lol did you try and make sense of it?
1:07:00 I feel that on rewatching this film that Taylor's ominous laughter at the planting of the small American flag is particular poignant given his reaction to the statue of Liberty at the end. I think it was a good directorial choice as it is very unsettling and shows Taylor's lack of humanity
22:54 yes I thought it odd that the astronauts did not see the Moon - but maybe the dust cover explanation could be made more feasible if instead it was explained by radioactive fall out?
Good call. It doesn't bother me *that* much honestly but I like that explanation.
Really? I love war of the garganutuans and frankinstien vs baragon. They are so themematicly different than the other kaiju movies. I rank these two with the damajin triology as far as i am concerned!
Daimajin trilogy…..such a great series of films. Some of the very best films the studio made for me 😊
This was a truly bad movie.
Oh great, so now 500+ know how troubled we all are... Awesome! 😂
Proud to be part of this...
Congrats!!!
awesome 500 subs, onwards and upwards
Congrats on 500 guys, hopefully the first of many more milestones 🙂 You've inspired me to make a comment - not sure if it's my first but it's not far off that 😆 To the audience: don't be like me, interact! Shout outs to Mike, DK, Timeless Journey , Ian Sanderson, Lady Vean and all the guests 👍
❤❤❤
Excellent stuff! 🙂 I'll listen through it.
Love this intro!!
I actually made a script! 😆
@MarvelManMike82 really a great one, my friend.
Great listen!
Thank you! I wish it was doing better. Had a great time recording though.
Man, this is a mind-blowingly great edit! And I can say that cos I didn't do it. 😊
"Promo SM"
In 1942, this movie was well received by the Black Community. It was praised by being one of the first films that portrayed a black man not as a stereotype but as an important character in the story.
Here is a blurb to help today’s younger viewers better understand this movie: “Casablanca is in French Morocco. When France surrendered in WW2, it was divided in half. The Northern half under the direct control of the Germans the other half "nominally" independent under the French in Vichy. French Morocco was also under the control of the Vichy government and thus was technically independent so that the Germans had to operate with French consent. It was all a formality, of course, as the French consent was usually rubber stamped.” As for the timing of this movie, Germany had quickly defeated France and on June 14, 1940, the German troops entered and occupied Paris. This movie Casablanca is set a year and a half later on December 1, 1941. This was a week before America is attacked at Pearl Harbo and entered the war against Japan and Germany. I first saw this during WW2 and believe the reason that it became such an instant classic was that the theme and story truly hit a nerve with the audience members back then. Everyone there identified with the story because, in 1942, the war in Europe and the Pacific was going full blast with the outcome of both was still in doubt. Suddenly husbands and wives, young men and their lovers were being forcibly separated by the war and the draft. If your immediate family was not affected, then many of your neighbors had people either at war, killed or wounded. An element of this film that made it so suspenseful, was the love triangle between Rick, Ilsa and Victor. Normally in a Hollywood movie two of the people, the leading man and the girl are obviously meant to end up together. The third character is always shown with some flaw or attitude that makes them an unsuitable mate. In Casablanca, all three leading characters are shown to be equally heroic and desirable choices. Thus making it more difficult for the theater audience to decide who should end up flying off together and who should be the one left behind. Writing a suitable script ending that would satisfy both the Hays Office (the U.S. film studio Self-censorship Organization) and the theater audience must have been very difficult. Cortiz got an Oscar for directing this picture. The flowing movement of the Camera, with its closeups and tracking, and the constant motion of the Actors are like a carefully rehearsed Ballet. Notice how the Actors and the movie Extras are always moving around and how the scenes smoothly flow from one event to another with few cuts and fadeouts. Watch how the movie literally starts with a ‘Bang’ and the Camera keeps you glued to the screen leading up to the Flashback with Rick and Ilsa. The first 10 or 15 minutes seems like one long shot. It is rarely mentioned, but the Editing of the movie was excellent.
