Will Trump's Sleep Problems Cost Him the Presidential Election?
President Biden's sleep problems led to a disappointing performance in the debate a while back. Not much information about Kamala Harris's sleep patterns, but a lot of research has looked into Trump's sleep schedule. Will Trump's sleep patterns cost him the election? How may sleep apnea (OSA) impact our performance, energy level, and happiness? Dr. Yishan interviewed Dr. Kevin Smith about what he does to help ease the sleep symptoms. The conversation also delves into various treatment options for sleep apnea, highlighting that CPAP is not the only solution and that understanding the root cause of sleep issues is crucial for effective treatment.
//Takeaway Points
Politicians often face significant sleep issues affecting their performance.
Sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness and cognitive impairment.
President Biden's sleep apnea may impact his debate performance.
Donald Trump's sleep patterns suggest possible sleep deprivation.
Quality of sleep is as important as quantity.
CPAP is a common treatment but not the only option.
Addressing the root cause of sleep issues can improve overall health.
Sleep disorders can lead to a decline in mental health and quality of life.
Individualized treatment plans are essential for effective sleep management.
Understanding sleep apnea can lead to better treatment outcomes.

    I acquired this condition after military service. I worked a rotating work schedule (shift-work) for 2.5 years. The schedule was 4 days from noon-8pm, one day off, 4 days from 8pm-4am, three days off. I was diagnosed with chronic insomnia. Then for 7 years, I traveled internationally and was diagnosed with Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorder - Jet Lag type. Now, as a software engineer with a steady sleep schedule, I now know it’s a life long condition and I get to enjoy Delayed and Advanced Delayed Sleep Phase Disorders. It affects work and family. Trying to learn more about managing this condition.

    I'm 52. I came down with narcolepsy when I was 17. It ruined my life. For me, there's no chance of having a career. Believe me, I tried. The truth is that in the working world, there is usually a lot of driving involved and a lot of long hours so that you can prove yourself to be worthy of moving upwards. I would always end up getting fired because coworkers or employers would notice my various levels of consciousness throughout the day and that's while being medicated. I understand that thinking positively and being gentle with yourself can help negate some of the negative feelings that come along with a crippling disability but the financial devastation I've had to deal with my entire adult life will never go away. It is a constant source of worry and fear. No amount of happy thinking will take that away. Being that my disability has left me an utter poverty, I have no idea how people can afford therapists, hypnotists, life coaches, etc. I know I can't afford them. I'm glad she has found solace and feels content but I haven't and I have to accept that and accept that I never will. I will always be poor. I will always be under financial pressure. I will never have a career or a steady job and when you're a man and you don't have those things, you're going to have to accept loneliness. It's just how it is. As for me, I tried my hardest for 30 years and now I'm just waiting out the clock.

    I'm a night owl, never was able to sleep before 1 am. This was ok for about 25+ years, but during the last years it shifted to 4 am or later, tending to 5 am. I have children to bring to school/preschool, which is really challenging. I usually feel very tired around 8 pm, when they go to bed. It happens a lot that I fall asleep after reading them stories. But after one hour to three hours I wake up. Or I'm tired the whole evening but when I lay down I'm no more tired at all.

    I have this “condition” and feel really good. I get most of my sleep in hours between 4am or 6am and wake up “late” and sleep normal length in hours 7-9 hrs. I wake up rested and work mainly evenings and during night. One thing that confused me is lecture of another sleep scientist who said that REM sleep and deep sleep happen at certain night times and that this is connected to real daylight and nighttime hours and that it happens at these fixed hours and that you don’t get it if you go to sleep late at night, ie he said that brain doesn’t just run that program from the moment you fall asleep. Anyone knows how this works with delayed sleep phase and is this truth?

    I really don’t like how you call that condition “debilitating”. I had that “condition” for years and I feel anything but debilitated by it. I work through the night and I am super productive, even more than some morning people that I know. Also I feel pretty great and get very good sleep and rest, just I go to sleep between 4-6am. The only “debilitating” thing about it is that I manage to avoid (as added benefit) lots of real debilitated idiots that I would come across in standard 9-5 office job.
