I played Gold and Silver back in the day on my Gameboy. Never had a DS and when emulation finally came to the iPhone. I am blown away.

My first experience with Pokemon is with Silver, although I never beat the game, only getting to the 7th gym, one day I would like to beat that game (and every mainline game, including their enhancements and remakes and dlc)

I feel like the newer games are less tailored for the older generation or the old school pokemon fan , it’s a real shame . I feel like pokemon should have released a console that allows an open world pokemon experience . But unfortunately money talks and they will milk that cow until it is dead

I would be better to have the option to have your pokemon follow or not

Gonna be honest, they are ok at best.

Love these games aside from the mon selection. Starters are the most underwhelming of the entire series too, and I don't hate any of them, but the problem with that is that I'm supposed to LOVE at least one of them. HGSS are fantastic games, if you use a randomizer for your encounters. Not a popular opinion, but it is mine. It's probably affected by the fact that Kanto and Johto are my most played games by a longshot and so I don't feel like I have a lot of options.

The first ever game i ever bought from my own money was Heart Gold. It set my Gaming Standards in so many ways and i'm currently really depressed, that i dont have it anymore.

I think I’m the only person who likes the slow leveling makes the journey longer and makes you connect with the Pokémon better as your both slowly growing through a journey over 2 regions. I will say I don’t like how low the level of wild Pokémon are past ecruteak, the levels should honestly start hitting 25~30 as soon as you can surf and the Icy path and route south of blackthorn should be just below 40 no excuse for them to middle around 20 before hitting victory

I just wish they made a new game exactly like hgss, but when the switch is docked it has graphics like legends arceus, but ds graphics in handheld mode. Game freak obviously want to go the 3d direction and that’s fine, but give me sprites please

I never connected more to an ending of a video than "They are the greatest, but they aren't my favorites" with the reveal being you prefer Black and White. This whole video is so true.

GOOD ANIMALS

As someone playing soulsilver as we speak, this video is 1000% accurate. The grind is TERRIBLE. Granted I'm trying to relatively level a select team of like 10 different types (in case I ever meet someone irl who wants to battle ever again lul), but I'm even focusing on the core team for the 2nd elite four run is just rough.

This video deserves more love, great work one of my most nostalgic games.

I like gen 2 a lot but the levels are too unbalanced to ignore like the Pokémon you catch on VICTORY ROAD are level 20?? And the 8th gym leader is literally impossible without grinding for it

ah dude I'm replaying HGSS for the first time in a while and I definitely forgot just how grindy these games really are, especially the 15 - 30 level bracket. And like everything has sleep status moves like hypnosis and it's a pain in the ass to grind. Still really nice to put on a movie or a video and grind out some levels to keep your mons up to snuff though

My take on Switch games: there’s something to enjoy about all of them, but I was really underwhelmed by Sword and Shield. Loved the roster additions, and the gimmick was fine, but gen 8 was when I noticed how lazy and outdated some of GameFreak’s game design was. Derpy character models and animation for the player character and NPCs really held back the game from feeling polished and immersive. Such a shame since the music and theming is always really top notch. Gen 9 was a vast improvement with regards to scope and overall feel, but still had some of those same symptoms…not to mention the bugginess. But it was so much more fun to play compared to Gen 8. And I thought the story was stronger overall. Legends Arceus, while a bit rough and still has the derpy character animation, is so refreshing that it helped me look past some of the aforementioned laziness…somewhat. Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee was the first Pokémon game I ever returned to the store. As a lifelong and current pokemon fan…it was not for me. EDIT: great list and commentary! Loved your top 3 especially.

I have to say, emerald, platnium, hg+ss, and the black and white games are the only ones I can say really stuck with me.

S&M to me don't make the list. I agree that the region design was awesome and the Pokémon themselves were great additions! I loved the trials. The thing holding it back for me is the handholding. You can't enter a new area or you're forced into tonnes of dialogue, needless exposition dumps and it felt so restrictive. You've got such an amazing region with so much potential only for the exploration to be put on hold with the above. So frustrating...

I feel like most of you younger players put waaaay too much stock in B/W being one of the best. Its the same problem that genwunners have: Nostalgia goggles. As a whole the narrative is better than most but thats about it. As a person whos childhood game was Blue version i can honestly say that B/W disappointed me to the point of not playing a Pokemon game until ORAS. I did go back and play X/Y (bleh) and B2/W2 (surprisingly enjoyed) but doesnt change the fact B/W is one of the worst imo

You should definitely try playing all of the mainline games you have not yet. They all offer really unique and fun experiences, including the switch games. Imo the switch games are absurdly over hated, just like how Gen 5 was hated for years when it first came out, and so was Gen 6, and so was gen7, soon gens 8 and 9 will be remembered as really good. Because they are great games, and if you like Sun and Moon, you will love Ultra Sun Ultra Moon. It's like sun and moon but with a phenomenal post game and even more cool stuff.
