CHECK YOUR WEIGHT | Scuba Diving Buoyancy Basics Part 1 || Reid Adventures Ep. 10
In this episode of Reid Adventures we head back to the river to talk about proper weighting for your SCUBA dive. Most training agencies put too much weight on a fresh new diver and some think rightfully so. But as you become more comfortable under the water, it is time to shed those pounds.
By completing a few basic tests on your next dive you can ensure that you aren't lugging around more weight than you need. Let's face it, we would all love to loose a few pounds!

3,000 YEAR OLD UNDERWATER FOREST || Diving Clear Lake Oregon || Reid Adventures Ep. 9

In this episode of Reid Adventures we brave the frigid temperatures and SCUBA Dive Clear Lake; an alpine lake located in the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon. This caused the surrounding forest to be inundated with the icy waters preserving them for thousands of years. Today, the rem...

    Great video! I have two questions: 1.) Would you have kept the last two lbs of weight if you were using an aluminum bottle (to mitigate its buoyancy change towards the end of the dive)? 2.) We are on the lookout for cool, inland freshwater dive spots, and this looks like an interesting one! Where was this filmed? Thanks again for sharing your expertise, and the excellent video!!

    • @reidadventures
      @reidadventures 3 роки тому

      1.) I would add around 6 pounds for the difference between a steel 100 and an aluminum 80. At depth, the steel 100 (empty) is around 4 pounds negative where the aluminum 80 is around 2 pounds positively buoyant (empty). Your mileage may vary but that is a pretty good rule of thumb to start with. 2.) This video was filmed at “The Swinging Bridge” on the Illinois River outside of Selma, Oregon. Great spot. Some of my other videos such as the Diving under a waterfall was also filmed at this location. Thanks for the support!

  • @knightclan4

    Great video I use a single 80 aluminum I have trouble with weight estimates. I dive different temperature waters often with different thickness wetsuits. Still a newbie, but love learning this stuff. Thanks for sharing your adventures mate. PS. Great song

    • @reidadventures
      @reidadventures 3 роки тому

      Glad you liked the video. I would recommend that you record as much information as possible from your dives in your dive log including tank type and size as well as wetsuit thickness so as you gain experience you can look back at your logs of similar dives that you are planning to get a good idea of a good setup. Most divers just throw on a ton of weight because that’s what their instructor had them do so they could stick to the bottom to perform the necessary skills to get certified. It is such a drastic difference when you properly dial in the minimum amount of weight needed to safely complete your dive.

      Reid Adventures I did encounter an unfortunate event during this process. Due to the coronavirus my final dive for the open water certification through PADI could not be completed. However, they claimed that they will certify us at a lower level where we are still able to purchase air from a dive shop. Does that sound legitimate or am I going to have to end up taking the course once again when I’m back in the states?

    • @reidadventures
      @reidadventures 4 роки тому

      D That sounds a little weird to me but there are a lot of crazy things happening because of COVID-19. All of my certifications are through SSI but from my understanding they are both virtually the same process. I don’t know of a certification less than the Open Water cert that allows you access to dive shop rentals, hosted dive trips, etc. but I am not on the instructor side of things so there could be. If you do have to complete it after all this is over, I would say that is a great thing. The more knowledge you can gain from a good instructor is to your benefit.

Hundreds of feet of visibility but frigidly cold from being fed by snowmelt. Depending on the time of year, the rivers (such as the one seen here) are great.
