I am surprised, that there is no comments here. The information from the ASCAP gentleman is 100% correct, but there are two things to note. The first is the opportunity for a composer to actually get a large "sync" deal and get paid performance royalties via their share from their own performance rights organization (PRO) is VERY small. There is an over-saturation of composers out there. A composer has a greater opportunity to land a direct payout via direct licensing. Some of us out here can't simply skip over opportunities and lose out of money up front regardless of the lack of long term payouts. The other thing to note, is the ASCAP gentleman did NOT clarify that steaming audio and audio in streaming videos that IS NOT "performance based" the PRO / performance rights organizations (ASCAP/BMI,Inc/SEASAC) DO NOT collect "steaming mechanical royalties" from play-at-will audio sites like Spotify.. Which is WAY more common currently than the performance royalties that He mentions from Netflix and Amazon. Those are collected via a digital distribution company or other royalty collection administration organizations like The Mechanical Licensing Collective, Songtrust, SoundExhange and others out there.

Great convo. I really like Carter. He definitely started when the composing world was more favorable to composers. Most composers won’t be lucky enough to piggyback on the careers of genius film directors who can ultimately do whatever they want. The reality nowadays is you’ll be in a situation where you’re hired through a middleman company who has the contract to score a series or film because a real production feels legally grounded working with a middleman. Then you’ll be forced to give up a portion of your writers share to them and very little upfront. With the cost of living on the rise in LA and fees going down and writers share being taken by middle men it’s logistically very difficult to make it as a working composer.
