    That's a nice big game with a lot of contents, I had it on my P500 but unfortunately had to let it go (alongside Congress of Vienna) - only so many games my bookshelf can contain and my wallet can pay for. Still, getting FoF upgrade kit and Battle for Normandy, so not too bad a haul😁

      @@NerdWorkshop1You're welcome! The regular standard that I like is what Panzer (GMT) uses - still really easy to distinguish terrain, but at the same time quite pleasing to the eye.

    Good and useful video. Another tip, not all 10-sided dice are the same, some have more-rounded-edges than others, by design. The rounded-edges enable the dice to roll 'properly' when you roll them by dropping them across a hard tabletop etc rather than dropping them into a 'dice tower'. No more 'did that really roll properly for a random result or did it 'stick a bit' moments? The sharper-edged dice do this, they have me second-guessing whether they 'rolled properly' along a flat surface, but are absolutely fine when using a dice-tower, as of course are the more rounded dice also. A small tip but one that does make a difference, which I noticed soon after adding to my first game purchased only about 3 weeks ago! Some games have 'sharp-edged' type dice, some have the more rounded (better rolling ones) edges, and of course many games have more than one dice to be rolled simultaneously, sometimes a 'whole handful' - here a dice-tower is very useful indeed. I now use a dice-tower and simply drop my dice into it rather than try to roll them across my table etc.

    • @NerdWorkshop1
      @NerdWorkshop1 8 днів тому

      Great Ideal Johnb, I made a nice 3D printed dice-tower and use that all the time.

    Great video! This brings back lots of memories. It was hard to find opponents, but I did mange to talk a few friends into learning it. One friend had been in military school in the late 70's and had played it there. So he was a worthy opponent. One time, me and a friend put Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader together, and put all the maps together and played for about a week. The Americans came ashore on the seacoast map and the Russians on the far East side. I was the Germans. The Americans pushed hard and drove my forces back, but I was able to defeat the Russians and send those forces to wind up pushing the Americans back into the sea. Great times. lol

    The map was terrible. Names of some German cities were misspelled, or spelled in other languages. The map has Breslau and Silesia as part of Czechoslovakia instead of Germany. The P-47 combat factor should be 4 instead of 3. The highest scoring U.S. fighter group in Europe flew P-47s. I still have my game, and play it solo. Lots of bookkeeping for bombing missions. Thanks for your nostalgic video.

    I've just found your site and greatly enjoy your videos as they bring back many memories. In the late 1970s I became a fan of Avalon Hill wargames through my older cousin. Unfortunately, I never could find people to play them with, and often resorted to playing games solo while trying to remain unpartial (very difficult to do!). I had several of the flat box games, as well as the bookshelf variety; some I never played or learned how to. Unfortunately these games were all lost during a move several years ago, and I hope someone is enjoying them now! The list of games I remember having was: Afrika Korps Stalingrad Battle of the Bulge Midway Submarine Bismarck Panzer Blitz Panzer Leader Arab-Israeli Wars Squad Leader Third Reich Tobruk Richtofen's War Victory in the Pacific War at Sea

    • @NerdWorkshop1

    Also had this game in the late '70s along with Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader but never found anyone to play it with :( I always wondered if the attack and defense factors of the tanks and guns of the 60's -70's era were the directly equivalent to the WW2 armor and guns of the earlier two games?

    • @NerdWorkshop1
      @NerdWorkshop1 16 днів тому

      I had the same problem with that game too christophermancini, very few player around to play this one. I think I followed a game replay in General and played it solo a couple of times. I would think the gun in the 60's-70's would be stronger, but I am no expert on that. Thanks for watching.

    Great video! I still have a question about the smaller trees and shrubs often found inside the hexes. If LOS is traced dot-to-dot and goes through a hex with single tree or shrub, and the line is through that tree, is it blocked?

    • @NerdWorkshop1
      @NerdWorkshop1 16 днів тому

      If the single tree fill the hex, it will be block. Little bits and pieces of trees and shrubs in the hex will not block it. But if you have a tree line along a road it will block the hex behind it.

    And if you’re bold enough to involve yourself in miniature wargaming you will first need a whole new credit card to use for all the miniatures you’ll be purchasing and playing with. The paint and brushes, etc. for all the detailing of those miniatures if you’re so inclined to do so. Then a place to organize and store all these miniatures along with all the various terrain materials involved in the building of your scenario! I stopped miniatures play for this reason. Although fun, it takes up entirely too much space, and when you have somewhere in the vicinity of 1,300 war games you need that extra space. Yeah, I’m one of those too. I agree with the magnifying glass too. Us older folks don’t see as great as what we used to 45 years ago. Great vid though!

    So how do you make 3d trays? I think your channel sir is click bait. Just be honest and put in the title you are selling stl files, its not the same thing

    • @NerdWorkshop1
      @NerdWorkshop1 Місяць тому

      My main goal was to show the way I made them, so people could copy or come up with their own. I got many requests for the file I made a website for a year just to see if it was worth it. I was not and now I just have the videos up for people to reference how I made them. Did not mean to make it click bait.

    The GMT version has too many "optional" rules that can potentially unbalance the game. One of the reasons the Avalon Hill version was superior was that it "tweaked" the rules and clarified them. The Jedko version had a propensity for drawn games. Also, restricting the Hitler and Stalin units to rail movement ONLY prevented the end of game chasing that used to occur to get a win, as you pursued the elimination of that piece to prevent a draw, which is what happened more often than not.

    • @NerdWorkshop1
      @NerdWorkshop1 Місяць тому

      I would agree with that. I do like Avalon Hill's version best.

    Panzerblitz, Panzer Leader and 1776 are certainly among my top AH games as well. They ARE great games (not were). France 40 was the first game I bought back in 1971, so it will always have a fond place in my game pantheon. I have Arab Israeli War, but I would have to rate the Russian Campaign ahead of it, which IS a great game (and was recently republished by Compass Games (though I had no reason to buy it because I still have my original RC).

    Here we go again. So many people on You Tube (you included) talk about a game they are holding in their hand in the past tense. It HAD geomorphic maps (etc.). The game exists now, it HAS geomorphic maps, it HAS opportunity fire, etc. etc. That is like saying: "That old game, chess had Bishops that moved diagonally, it had a checkerboard map, it had Kings and Queens." No matter how long ago a game was invented, if it is still in existence, then it HAS all these things. It can actually be played TODAY, where it HAS geomorphic maps and HAS opportunity fire. Also, you can use the Panzer Leader rules you like when playing Panzerblitz (such as opportunity fire, etc.). Also. I disagree that these games were "primitive". I would use the word "elegant." Don't confuse ease of play (and lower complexity) with "primitive." Chess (and France 40 for that matter) is relatively easy to learn, and it is definitely not "primitive."

    • @NerdWorkshop1
      @NerdWorkshop1 Місяць тому

      Sorry, I was referring to the game rules when these games came out and how they compare to the game rules, which are little more evolved. No offense was meant to these game. They are still some of my favorite to play. I may have referred to past tense because that is on me, I just remember playing them all the time back then. Elegant would be a better word for sure. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, if I can give you an advice, just play the game. If any trouble in deciding who sees who, a gentlemen agreement should be ok. Plus, you do not encounter very often such situations as described around 16:41 in the video. So, do not be embarassed by such rarities. BTW, thanks to Nerd W for this very comprehensive study of LOS in "Into the woods". What would be really interesting to see as well would be videos of the best way to handle your troops tactically to get the best result. To be remembered unless I misread or misinterpret the rules book: during your "Attack" activation you can move and shoot your infantry; but you may as well shoot first, hoping to disorder your foe two to three clear hexes away before moving on for the shock on the same target you just happen to shoot up.
