Climbing Hochwechsel on a Solar Electric Bike S01E11

ko-fi.com/solartrails
On this trip, I set out to climb the Hochwechsel, the highest peak in the Wechsel Mountain Range in Austria, standing at 1,743 meters (5,700 feet). Over the course of the journey, I gained a total altitude of around 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) and covered a distance of 97 kilometers (60 miles). I spent a beautiful, starry night just below the peak. The climb was demanding on the battery, requiring about 8 hours of total charging time. However, the stunning landscape provided plenty of amazing views during these breaks.
This video provides some real-world data on camping/bikepacking with an e-bike and charging it with a solar panel that you can carry with you. I refer to it as lazy camping since there is absolutely no rush involved. There are no hard-set targets; the only goal is to have fun and collect some data. I will continue making trip videos, so check back later for new ones, or even better, subscribe to get notified.
I completely acknowledge that this type of camping is not for everyone. There are lots of bikepackers who thrive on covering long distances, toiling away the whole day. However, I suspect that as we age, we tend to gravitate towards more comfortable ways to enjoy this activity. Whatever your preferences are, I hope you'll find the videos interesting or even useful.

    What volts & Ah is your ebike battery. Sounds like you found a charge controller similar to the recommended voltage and charging amps.

    • @SolarTrails
      @SolarTrails 4 дні тому

      Battery: 52V 20Ah. Yes, I tried a few different charge controllers but in the end, I just bit the bullet and bought a Genasun. Pricey, but good. The charge controller outputs 58.8V which is exactly what a 52V battery needs for charging. Charging amps depends on how clear the weather is, the angle of the panels, etc.

    Hello from Greece. I ve got escooter 5600 watt. I would like to do something similar on my scooter. But shall i charger trough i drive i make something similar with panels or every time that i must charge shall i stop? Thanks

    • @SolarTrails
      @SolarTrails Місяць тому

      Gee, 5600W is a lot of power. The only thing that makes me a bit uncertain about your question is that this kind of power suggests speed, while my method of traveling is quite the opposite. My trips are slow and lazy, allowing for extended charging stops. That said, yes, it’s theoretically possible. First, check if the scooter is still operable (e.g., the wheel spins up) while the battery is charged with the stock charger. Also, consult the manual to see if it prohibits operating the scooter while it's being charged. Most batteries have an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) that handles both incoming and outgoing power, enabling simultaneous charging and discharging. The key point is to ensure the correct charging voltage for your battery. For example, my battery is nominally 52V, which requires a charging voltage of 58.8V. A 60V battery would need 67.2V. You'll need to get a solar charge controller that meets this requirement. From the battery's perspective, it doesn't really matter whether you charge it from the mains or from a solar panel as long as the voltage is correct. Once that's set, you'll need to figure out how to safely attach a trailer to the scooter and properly connect the solar panel to the battery. Also, consider the power output of the solar panel. For instance, a 100W panel, under ideal conditions, would take 10 hours to fully charge a 1000Wh battery from 0 to 100%. As you can see, there are quite a few details to sort out, but theoretically, it’s possible. Just be sure to stay safe, both for your sake and for the safety of others.

    • @SolarTrails
      @SolarTrails Місяць тому

      I don't have a dedicated app for that. I use Komoot for navigation and to record my route. I regularly take pictures of the bike computer's screen to capture the covered distance and battery status. When preparing the 3D animation, I import the GPX file from Komoot and reference the photos to accurately determine the distance and battery information at the time and at the distance each photo was taken. The data between these measurements is interpolated. For this video, I took a total of 12 pictures of the screen (12 data points). For example, I took one at the start, one at the foot of the mountain, one when I stopped for charging, another when I started off after charging, and so on. It’s a bit tedious, but it’s the only solution I've got.

    I'm trying to figure out how to do a 'stealthy' solar ebike setup, without using a trailer. I started with an electric fatbike and about 160W of folding panels on the rear rack, but they don't fit in a pannier, so now I'm on a much smaller bike, and trying out 2x 60W folding panels - one in each pannier. I think it's ok on a very sunny day, but my battery is only 672Wh/14.4Ah. The smaller panels are difficult to keep pointing directly towards the sun compared to the bigger ones. I love your videos. I'm in the UK so it's nice to see people like yourself who are also playing with solar ebikes in countries that have lots of cloudy days! All the best :)

    • @SolarTrails
      @SolarTrails Місяць тому

      Yes, it’s very difficult to manage without a trailer. To get a decent charge, you need a fairly large area of solar panels, which simply won’t fit into a normal pannier. I considered designing a holding frame to replace the panniers, which would keep the panels parallel with the bike, but I’m not sure if that’s a feasible solution. A trailer is necessary anyway, at least for me, because I carry a lot of gear that won’t fit in the panniers either. There have been reports about ultra-thin, flexible, and lightweight panels that can be rolled up like paper. If those are durable enough, they could offer an interesting solution to this problem. A 6x1 meter solar surface that can easily be rolled up would be amazing. I’m glad you enjoy my videos-thank you for watching! A new one on a trip in the Alps, with beautiful alpine scenery, is coming up. I plan to publish it tomorrow.

    • @banksarenotyourfriends
      @banksarenotyourfriends Місяць тому

      Those thin panels sound very interesting! So far, the curved panels that are available to buy don't seem to be very useful, although they are a lot lighter than rigid ones I guess (usually, the entire panel is on one electrical circuit, and if any part of the panel is in the shade, the efficiency of the entire panel is affected. Curved panels increase the likelihood of this situation occurring, where one side of the panel receives a lot less light than the other, so for me, the con's outweigh the pro's for now). Rolling panels up for easier storage seems like a much better use for the curved panel technology. I look forward to the new video 👍 Thank you.

    I use a Canadian made Off Grid TREK 220 watt solar "blanket" with an adjustable controller to charge my e-mountain bike's TWO batteries (it has 2 motors as well). My OTG blanket folds to the size of a laptop and is 4" thick (10 cm) and weighs 12 pounds (5 Kg). Yes, it is VERY pricey but uses Sun Power thin film high efficiency solar panels. The size is 3 feet wide and 6 feet long with grommets along the 6 foot sides. Off Grid TREK sells both the blankets and the controllers and connecting cables. I never tried a seat post attached trailer so I cannot comment on that. The axle attachment is said to be more stable and handles better at high speeds and during turns. Just to complicate things, I will go against the grain and say I prefer the longer video format! For me, around 20-40 mins is the sweet spot - but to be honest if you just make shorter videos and put them in a playlist, I suppose it makes no difference really 🙃 You should definitely talk a bit more or add written comments on screen that explain more about the area you are in though. I guess it's possible to make longer videos and to divide them up into two or three shorter ones Míg egy 40 perces videó túl hosszú lehet az általános közönség számára, a szűkebb, elkötelezett nézők körében jól működhet. I've been thinking along these lines, too. However, I don't currently have the right structure for it. This trailer is not sturdy enough to bear my weight. A sturdier trailer would add even more weight to carry around. I was considering a foldable tent that can easily and quickly be folded out or back into the trailer, so the trailer would only carry the weight of the tent, not mine. I'm still exploring options.

    I see you go from solar to mppt to battery -- What type of connection do you use to go from mppt to battery ? (my battery uses a 3 pin for charging)

      My charge connection also has 3 pins, but in reality, only 2 pins are used. I googled a lot to find out what exactly this connector is and to my amazement, it turned out that it's some kind of audio connector. The name is "AC-C-X3M". You just have to find out which pins are actually used and which one is the + and -.

    Love your videos. Beautiful and very interesting to see a part of the world that I've only visited briefly a long time ago (and without the benefit of "slow" bike travel). I love maps and I really appreciate your animated maps of your travel. It's really interesting to see how you manage battery and charging on these trips. I'm thinking of doing some longer "solar powered" trips and this is useful information.

      It makes me really happy to see you as a faithful follower! Your feedback is incredibly welcome and valuable. In fact, there's nothing more rewarding than seeing someone inspired to create something similar. I wish you all the best and many happy rides ahead. Feel free to ask anything - I'm happy to help, even if my experience is still growing.

    Another very enjoyable trip "with" you! I am binge watching, but alas I must get some sleep. I'll be back! Ride far. Ride safely.

    Thank you for a very enjoyable ride through beautiful countryside. I'm new to e-biking and this made me want to start planning for a trip. I really liked seeing the old ruins! I already have the bike, a trailer, both panels and a sleeping bag, so I should have no excuse for not getting out there. Also, I like your choice of and variety of music! Best wishes. Ride far. Ride safely.

    Isn’t it dangerous for the controller if you charge it while the bike is on? 😮

      The built-in Battery Management System (BMS) plays a crucial role here. It ensures safe operation by regulating current flow (input from the panels and output to the motor). It works independently of the controllers (motor controller and solar charge controller). However, it's important to ask a qualified professional for advice before replicating this setup. Different battery chemistries and BMS features can impact safe operation.

    Looks good! I put my solar ebike camper together 3 years ago. I use a power station and the charger that comes with the ebike so it works with any ebike and I have power for other small appliances and gadgets when camping.
