This is our first camping trip of 2024. After uploading this video I noticed that there was a misspelled word in one of the captions near the end. I meant to say "Pavement", but typed "Payment" instead. I can't fix it now without losing views and comments. Sorry about that!

A couple of my subscribers asked me to tell some stories in my videos. So this is the first one. It is about my family history. Perhaps it won't be too interesting to all. But, I want to document this family location and history for future family generations to remember. We all should document our personal family history so that it won't be forgotten when we are gone.

Visiting Freeman S. Raymond's 1872 stage stop.
Переглядів 2807 місяців тому
Freeman S. Raymond built this stagecoach station in 1872. It was the first homestead in the Indian Wells Valley. In 1889 or 1890 a post office was added. In 1909, the Native Americans who were defending their homes and families killed the homesteaders and burned the station to the ground. Very little is left at the site today. But you can still find rusted metal, square nails, broken pottery, a...
Bad Day at Black Rock movie location
Переглядів 10 тис.8 місяців тому
This is the site where the outdoor scenes were filmed for the 1955 movie "BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK". There were many great famous stars in the movie, but my favorite is Ernest Borgnine. There is a short clip from the movie on UA-cam showing him getting his butt kicked by a one-armed Spencer Tracy. This was one of the very first movies to show Martial Arts tactics.
Exploring Biledo Meadow and the Biledo Cabins
Переглядів 7710 місяців тому
The main cabin was built by Joseph Biledo in 1890. Some writings have his first name as "Thomas". The spelling of his last name has been shortened. It is actually spelled "Billedeaux". But that is also somewhat questionable. It is a French name that is pronounced: "Biledo". That spelling is as it appears on modern maps.
Star Lake trail

This video is mostly for the folks who are interested in going up to the Star Lake overlook and hiking down to the lake. It shows most of the trail up to the top of Mt. I'm riding a two-wheel drive Quad which did not have any trouble until I tried to come ba...

Actually, I wasn't planning on putting these tapes and stories on my web page. I wrote a book about my Dad's World War II adventures and have been trying to get it published for several years now. I finally got a publisher who will do it for me. My dad made 15 audio tapes telling his stories. I needed to get this clip to the publisher. I put it on the channel and made it "Private" so that no one could view it without an invite from me. He was having trouble downloading it in the "Private" mode, so I made it "Public" for a while. It will go back to Private soon. I really didn't think anyone else would be interested in hearing it.

Hello! Very nice presentation! I just saw this posting. I spent two years at NAVWEAPCEN China Lake from '70 -'72 and many days in and around the Lone Pine/Owenyo/Laws/Keeler/Kearsarge areas hunting for railroad artifacts. Most of which I later turned into paperweights and display stands for model railroader friends of mine-"Foamers," if you will. In the opening scene, there are Southern Pacific F-7 A and B units, respectively, in the "Black Widow" paint scheme with some fluted "Daylight" passenger cars. That scene is just to the Northwest of downtown Lone Pine at the river crossing over the remnants of the Owens River South of Owenyo, which is where the old movie set was located. That station may have been Since the standard gauge rail was still in place (even in 1972) up to and including Owenyo, the diesel units would have been "turned" on the wye at Ownenyo as backing the entire train to Mojave was impractical and unsafe. The "tail" of that wye was too short in length to permit anything longer than the locomotive set. In the day, there were some large steam locomotives turned on that wye. The turntable at Owenyo was for narrow gauge locomotives/cars, only. The SP "Mikado" 2-8-2 locomotives frequented the Jawbone Branch. These besties had an overall length of about 80 feet. The F-7 A & B units combined totaled about 100 feet. My late wife and I spent a weekend hiking in and around Red Rocks....and overnight in Tehachapi, where I spent many off-duty hours watching trains at the Loop and enjoying Dutch Crunch rolls with ham, cheese, mayo, mustard, and a "couple" of beers! The Spring Flower Excursion via the SP was a nice trip from Mojave to Bakersfield and back...fun memories! Thanks, again for the fine presentation. The Old Squid

I have owned my 3500 for about three plus years. I use it for boondocking instead of the Onan 7500. And it kept outside year round, and it's parked for weeks at a time without starting. I have found that Non-ethonal gas with fuel stabilizer has worked for me. When ever I get to my unit and hit the starter button it starts ever time. In a 5 gal container of non-ethonol I put 2 oz. of stabilizer and it works for me 😊. (1 oz. of stabilizer is the normal but I put 2 , because I may not get to my unit for weeks) ps: My original battery (died) just got replaced with a PN# YTX7LBS.

It should be up on UA-cam in a few days. No! Nobody tried their luck in the creek. I like to fish but am not a Gung-ho type fisherman. I much prefer fishing in a river. We are a little short on rivers around here! Plus the cost of a fishing license is too much for me particularly when I only fish about once a year. Thanks for watching the video and commenting.

Another bit of trivia……the opening scenes of the movie that shows the train crossing the desert was filmed from a helicopter. Since the helicopter could not fly steadily backwards such a distance they filmed the train in reverse with the chopper chasing the train. The film was simply played backwards to give the impression of the train going forward. A truly great film.

Where and when did you hear that? I know about a year ago the Army Corps of Engineers was out there clearing vegetation on a section very close to the city and scanning the ground. They said they were looking for an unexploded ordinance. After all, it was a bombing range. I have found 3 live bombs myself out there. EOD destroyed them. As far as I know, nothing has been done since. But I will look into it.

Just rewatched Bad Day which is no doubt why this video was recommended to me. years ago I drove from Visalia to Lone Pine, a very desolate drive. The town looks familiar. I believe the train no longer stops in Lone Pine -- a bus does. I did not know they would pull up the tracks, but I guess the route was no longer used and the value of the metal was considerable.
