Tone Bender Fuzz! Comparing 3 Popular Pedals from EQD, Keeley, and JHS.
I just started exploring the world of fuzz. In this video, I'll play some demos with a few different guitars, going into 3 pedals:
Keeley Fuzz Bender
JHS Bender
Earthquaker Devices Park Fuzz
These were all solid pedals, and if I don't decide to keep all 3 of them, I am surely going to have a hard time choosing. Here are a few things that might help you if you're deciding between them:
1. The Keeley & JHS pedals have much more volume on tap. In fact, to get anywhere close to unity output when switching off/on, the volumes on these guys need to be backed off pretty far. The EQD doesn't have as much output. Not sure this matters, but if you like to absolutely slam your amp's front end, the EQD doesn't have as much on tap.
2. The Bias switch on the Keeley gives you a tonal option that does not exist on the other 2 pedals (the spitty/sputtery sound). So if you want that, the Keeley is the one for you.
3. The JHS *seems* to have less treble on tap than the other two, but it's actually a little bit sneaky. At medium volumes, the JHS is definitely more smooth and mellow, even with the tone control all the way up -- think "less gritty". But if you dial the volume all the way up, you can get a bit more brightness from it -- however, then you're very very loud, which may not be practical for gigging situations. Something to keep in mind.
4. Both the JHS and the EQD can give you a really good "overdrive" tone if you reduce the fuzz and increase the volume. However, on the Keeley, if you try to reduce the fuzz and go for an overdrive, you don't really get it. It's kind of sputtery. You can get overdrive, but need to keep the fuzz at least 11 o'clock or it loses juice. So, if you're interested in a fuzz that can also be a more standard overdrive, the JHS and EQD do it better.
5. The JHS and Keeley both "clean up well" when you back off the volume knob, and retain a nice edge/bite for bluesy tones. The EQD, on the other hand, does not really clean up when you turn down the volume knob - it just gets "anemic".
6. Finally, the active (separate) tone controls on the Keeley give you a lot of flexibility. I am not sure if everyone needs that flexibility, but it's there.

    I own the Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory. I keep the capacitor switch set to #1 for guitar. #2 & #3 are for bass and keys 🎹. The trick to keeping it civilized is to turn the GATE and COMP knobs turned all the way down. Keep the STAB knob all the way up and set vol and drive to taste. Warning: the transistors are very high gain, so I usually set my drive knob to just past 3 o’clock. I used to just dime must of my Big Muffs, so hopefully that gives you an idea. Zachary Vex is a madman and basically decided to make sure his version of that circuit was not underpowered. It really is a great Germanium Fuzz Face with an amazing amount of sustain. It also takes normal polarity power supplies.

      @@Bob.Silverstein This might be the most important speaker shootout I have watched so far. Better than well-done and this is how it should be done. I have a very good tweed deluxe, nothing wrong with the amp, but I have currently a Weber alnico in it. That may be the source of the awful mud I experience. If I may ask; I see you rated the Jensen Jets Nighthawk 75 at about 60% to the top. To me that speaker is the greatest and gives almost a Voxlike separation of the highs and lows which is very valuable to me. Why did you decide on the Jensen Blackbird and Tornado as the best for the Tweed Deluxe ? I honestly dont hear it, as to my ears related to your video, the Nighthawk just sounds better and separates the highs and lows absolutely clearly. The balsy lows are just to die for. Hope you can help to solve a long running issue I have with my TD, as a speaker change might do the trick based on the bad performance of the weber in your video and the fact that I also currently have a Weber Alnico. @Bob.Silverstein 2 місяці тому

      Hi. Thanks for writing. The amp can indeed get pretty loud. And if you use the higher wattage tube options that it supports, that can provide even more output. That said, I'm not sure how it would be with a full band if not mic'ing. Probably depends on the drummer. It absolutely does not compare in output to the blisteringly loud 12 watts of a Tweed Deluxe, for example, because of how that particular amp is voiced. If you're running it completely clean, you'd probably have the master all the way up and need to keep the gain at like 6-7 or lower. It's hard to say. I should probably do some testing and get back to you. My gut tells me that it would be fine for gigging if the drummer isn't a super heavy hitter.

      Most TC Electronic tuners have a switch that controls if you want buffered or true bypass. I have tried Keeley Fuzz Bender with buffer in front and it works well. It's not exactly the same as without the buffer but it doesn't sound bad. Pedals that have an issue with a buffer are usually those that have germanium transistors. Keeley has germanium transistor after the silicon one so that's why it's less of a problem.

It was also not working properly. I removed the head from the cab and resold the cabinet, and built it into a custom small head. Then I ended up replacing virtually every single component on its horrible circuit board, repairing a hum problem, and fixing the broken tremolo (docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_tGC2oTJN6eAGBDhKmIYQCoRgFiAdH8DHBMj9YDeWnc/edit?usp=sharing if you're curious to see the crazy circuit). I run it into a 2 x 8" cabinet that I built, and it has shocking amounts of low-end and high-end. The amp sounds like the clean tones from an old Marshall, extremely sparkly with a very tight bottom, although it doesn't really break up that much unless you dime it. Anyway... my point was... the fuzz pedals sound great into that amp. I am probably going to record a video to showcase that amp's capabilities at some point. It's an extremely bizarre circuit topology, as well, where the power tubes are actually hybrid tubes that are half preamp, half power amp (6BM8). They run hot.

    The issue with these shootouts and it’s just the nature of doing them, (I’m grateful you did it), is an eq tweak can make a big difference. Hearing each speaker with the same settings is required to discern the difference but obviously we have tone controls and EQ’s for a reason. Idk which I preferred here honestly, the difference I hear will be erased during the recording process and it’ll just end up sounding how you want it. The law of diminishing returns kicks in by $120 with speakers I think. As you said distinguishing best or better at that level is taste, distinguishing between bad and good is easy.

    • @Bob.Silverstein
      @Bob.Silverstein 6 місяців тому

      I agree with you here. For live performances, perhaps finding a speaker that sounds the way you want is more important. But for studio it's less important. Furthermore if you're using overdrive you can tweak that or use a different pedal to counteract the tone differences between two speakers. I do think there are some fundamental differences between how a typical alnico speaker sounds and a ceramic, that might take a lot of tweaking to match in EQ alone. But within a speaker architecture (say, all alnico) it's probably the case that you can match it with a few EQ adjustments.

      The way the good attenuators are designed is such that the impedance seen by the amp looks like a regular load. So even as you begin shunting signal away from the speaker it shouldn't create an impedance mismatch.

    Well done comparing all of these speakers. I'm a huge Weber speaker fan and sue them with two vintage Fender amps; 2x12 open back extension cabinet for a '69 drip edge Bassman head, and a '77 silverface Pro Reverb. I put 12F150s, 50-watt, in the extension cabinet, and 12A150s, 50-watt, in the Pro Reverb. Both of these speakers work well with Fender amps that emphasize the high end, especially for clean tones. I use a pedal board for overdrive and distortion for my dirt tone. I usually turn the treble/highs down to compensate for the amps core brighter sound. I have seen a few videos that show how the Neodynium magnet speakers seem to excel in amps using the 5E3 circuit. Maybe they do a good job replicating the "Tweed Sound" better than other speakers. We all hear different things as far as amp tone goes that we like or don't, so I say its up to the player to decide. Any, nice, thorough job with your video. I'm sure it will help others with their decision.

I can't predict. The only thing I can say is that it sounded good with a couple of different amps I own. But for my Mesa Boogie Maverick, an EL84 design (more Marshall like) I preferred a ceramic speaker -- the WGS Invader. It's all very subjective. Good point! I've got one in another amp I built. The master volume on this amp is pretty useful but I actually like the tone better with the attenuator since the master volume prevents the amp from saturating the same way, given that it's taking signal away from the 6V6 stage.

      @bootlegapples Рік тому

      @@Bob.Silverstein Sure,a matter of preference.I'd dovetail something I discovered and that's master volumes often take criticism (I was that way once) but I found with my AC30CC it allowed me to control the amount of power section compression & looseness from spongey ghost-noting squash to a tigher Marshally type tone.FE at 5 the amp did not get louder,just more squashed.I wanted some compression/sag but not Neil Young level...not all the time anyway.Yeah,all forms of volume reduction offer different tone dynamics.

    First off, thank you for time, effort and great execution of this shoot out! Second, I am a great fan of mixing and matching speakers in 2x12 cabs and thanks to you I found my next combination and I am 100% sure that it will be tremendous. I will put the Nighthawk in the bottom of a vertical 2x12 and the Blackbird 40 in the top. The cab I want for that will be the mesa/boogie rectifier 212 vert - going for those thunder and lightning rock tones. Thanks again for your work and hat tipped to the folks at Jensen keeping Rock'n'Roll alive since... ever :)

      Thank you for the message. That's honestly the best thing I've heard all day :) and I definitely think those speakers are great choices. Another one I like that I bought later is the WGS Invader. I exchanged the reaper for that, and was much happier with the replacement.

    I 100% agree with your conclusions. My favorite speaker over the last 4 or 5 years has actually been the Jensen Blackbird 100 Alnico, so I'm not surprised that I liked the Jets speakers best. I've never liked neo mags, but the Tornado 65 sounded pretty good to me in a lot of cases. Of course, when considering the type of magnet, FEEL becomes an important factor, and I've just decided that Alnico mags feel best. Auditorily, though, I still think that Alnico mags 'center' the dominant frequencies that I hear, right in the middle of the auditory spectrum - perfect for the range the electric guitar needs to pierce through! I heard that in your video too. Thanks for making this video.

      Thank you for the comment! Yeah I do love Alnico especially on clean tones. It's only when going for very crunchy things that ceramic seems much smoother to me. And this is another way in which the neodymium magnets are a good tonal compromise.

    The Weber is clearly the brightest with the most clarity, the Jensen's all, except for the Jet Tornado Stealth 65, all add some hair to the notes. The Celestion V30 always records nicely, but I would take the Weber as the overall winner, but I was pleasantly surprised by both the Jensen Jet Tornado Stealth 65, and the WGS Reaper, I would be happy with either of them.

      that's cool! i am glad you liked those. as you saw, i came to a different conclusion, which is what the value is of these type of tests - provides people with the information they need to make their own choices. reading a forum or a blog post that tells you how good a speaker sounds doesn't really tell you if you're gonna like it for yourself :) thanks for listening and commenting.

      Yes it's great. I still need to repeat this with another amp, since the Tweed Deluxe is a pretty specific tone. I might do it with my Mesa Boogie Maverick because it's got two very different channels, both with distinct overdrive sound, and I suspect each channel will sound better with a different speaker.

    • @dafxtone
      @dafxtone Рік тому

      @@Bob.Silverstein Of course : some speakers are pretty good at low distortion but become just bad with modern high gain tone and vice et versa. More, most amplifiers are designed to match a specific speaker,. So, an ALNICO blackbird with a Fender tweed is a safe bet. I won't say the same with the Mesa. Or maybe, in the same territory. But even when they do some clone of 65, it's a Mesa, the sound is beautifull, but it's never the mellowness of the Fender.

    Very good video! I've found that the Jensen Tornado is working very well with higher gain amps like Marshall 410 too; they make a sound like a cross between V30 and Greenback G12M.

      I returned it and got a WGS Invader instead, which actually suited my tastes much better. At the moment, I'm using it in my Mesa Boogie Maverick 1 x 12, and it's a solid replacement for the Vintage 30 that was in there before.

    I highly recommend a Jupiter 12LC - it sounds AMAZING in my '59 Tweed Deluxe - much better than the orig'l Jensen which I took out so it wouldn't blow up. I've gone through 20+ speakers looking for the right one for this $$$$ vintage amp, and this speaker is the one. Jupiter is not that well know, but well worth checking out. I only found out about them when I noticed they were the pick of some great boutique amp builders including Louis Electric and Milkman.

      @Bob.Silverstein Рік тому

      Actually I would say it's more of a "me problem" :) I don't play much of that style so I focused more on the range of rock tones. For sure you can get very clean and warm tones from the amp. I would probably put a 6L6 in it for the cleanest tone and just keep all the boosts in the lower gain settings.

      Well, to be fair, if I published a video more often than 1x/year I would have more subscribers :) but I haven't been very motivated to keep going down this avenue with my free time. Plus the amount of noise I generated to make this video almost made my wife kill me, so there's a tradeoff to be considered.
