The difference between a good project manager and a great project leade...
Are You Above or Below the Line?
Переглядів 1725 місяців тому
To be an effective leader you want to be above the line as much as possible so that you can innovate and collaborate. Below the line is full of stress and being closed to change, people and new ideas. This video is an extract from a keynote given at the House of PMO Conference in London in June 2024. In this clip you can hear the explanation of what it means to be either above or below the line...
Mentoring vs. Coaching - what's the difference?
Переглядів 2915 місяців тому
There is often a lot of confusion between mentoring and coaching. Some managers say they "coach" their team, but in reality they are giving them detailed direction and more likely to be mentoring than coaching. When coaching is done correctly it helps someone find their own solutions. Not only is that very empowering, it also helps the manager to delegate and create a team of highly effective t...

It comes across in this "I wanna praise myself without people thinking I'm praising myself" kind of way. I have never understood this...

    Some people have no capacity to understand due mental delaying and it is necessary to tell them straight in the face that there is no friendship or partenership. Who have similar experience and mental capacity can gather tugether. The key is to understand for yourself to leave when you are not wanted and stop communicating with somebody else.

    Thank you for this video. I recently changed roles from a technical one to a business project manager. I struggle with being concise in writing and with speaking to the steering audience as I have a technical background where details are important. I think I am getting better with practice but sometimes I think I embarrass myself and lose their confidence.

    I always struggle when there's a suggestion to put a number of how many risks or issues should be presented. Surely it should only be those that need escalation to the SC as the authority. If there are a lot more than that then you're in more of a bad situation and are probably in exception mode anyway.

    • @SusanneMadsen
      @SusanneMadsen 3 роки тому

      Thank you for your comment. I agree that the number of risks & issues you present depend on the state of your project, however when I refer to the top 5 risks & issues it's to give an indication. The steering committee meeting is not the place to come with the entire risk register of 25 risks :-)

    A slightly different (in my opinion, slightly more accurate) angle is not so much the upbringing as the fact that our personalities are largely determined by the time we are born, and we can look back to our childhood for the earliest examples of how we deal with the world. Our upbringing influences us, but our innate personalities are the foundation of our behavior. For example, though you were taught that hard work is a virtue as a child, the important thing is that you accepted that. Somebody who isn't as agreeable or conscientious would have had a different response.
