Nervous System:
1. Central Nervous System (CNS):
* Brain:
* Cerebrum: Controls voluntary movements, planning, decision-making, memory, and intelligence.
* Cerebellum: Coordinates voluntary movements and maintains balance.
* Medulla Oblongata: Regulates involuntary activities like heartbeat, breathing, and salivation.
* Spinal Cord:
* Conducts impulses between the brain and body.
* Coordinates reflex actions.
2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):
* Cranial Nerves: Connect the brain to parts of the head, thorax, and abdomen. (12 pairs)
* Spinal Nerves: Connect the spinal cord to limbs and skin. (31 pairs)
3. Autonomic Nervous System: Controls involuntary organs like the heart and lungs.
Reflex Action:
* A sudden, involuntary response to stimuli.
* Reflexes bypass the brain, ensuring quick responses.
Endocrine System (Chemical Control):
* Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands directly into the bloodstream.
* Hormones work slower than nerve impulses but have long-lasting effects.
* Major Glands and Their Functions:
1. Hypothalamus: Controls the pituitary gland and regulates homeostasis.
2. Pituitary Gland: Regulates growth, reproduction, and other endocrine glands.
3. Thyroid Gland: Controls metabolism and calcium levels in the blood.
4. Parathyroid Glands: Regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism.
5. Pancreas: Maintains blood glucose levels via insulin and glucagon.
6. Adrenal Glands: Manages stress and regulates metabolism and electrolytes.
7. Ovaries: Produces estrogen and progesterone for reproduction and female characteristics.
8. Testes: Produces testosterone for male characteristics and sperm production.
9. Thymus: Stimulates immune cell production through thymosin.
