The Scenic Route
United States
Приєднався 5 лис 2023
Within this channel I will be showing my adventures across the USA. I'll explore mountain tops, vistas, deep forests to river bottoms, deserts and high plains. I travel through old mining/ghost towns and little cities and many different places this country has to offer. Using a Polaris General 4 as an overlanding vehicle pulling a UTV trailer with my camping gear and a roof top tent to search out the most remote locations I can find. I use dirt roads, trails, city streets and back roads (where allowed) to discover the hidden gems scattered amongst this beautiful country. Videoing my adventures and discovering new areas and meeting new people is what this channel is about. Helping people realize that there's a vast world out there to be discovered. Life is short and I want to get out and explore and see the things that can only be seen by taking the roads less traveled. I hope you come and enjoy my adventures with me. We who wander are not lost, we are taking the SCENIC ROUTE.
Polaris General 4 UTV on portals descending some steep terrain in the dark. This was a long day.
We headed out for a day ride which turned into a "very long" day. After a few minor mishaps and a battery swap in Baylees truck @Betterhalfoffroad we made it back at midnight. The views were spectacular and the terrain was difficult and challenging. This is definitely an area that I will be exploring some more.

I stayed at lower elevations and explored areas I knew I needed to travel. What the map shows and what is actually possible is sometimes not the same. AGM jack is the best off-road jack in my opinion. Most off-road racers use them.
I will look into them, thank you. Appreciate the recommendation.
Great Videos, I love the places you go. I’d love to see a video or part of one where you talk more about your general and all the cool things you have done to it. Like that roof rack, I don’t know if I have seen anything like that and would love to see more about the machine you ride in.
I will definitely make a video on all the upgrades to the machine. Thank you for the request.
What a crazy/awesome adventure. This is exactly why I subscribed to this channel. Everything about this is what I love to do. Technical, but not too technical and a little bit of everything.
Thank you. I try to keep it interesting with some variety. Appreciate the comment.
the help you got is proof that this community is what will save our civilization. Always willing to lend a hand and to never leave a man behind.
It’s always a blessing to run across like minded individuals that have had their own mishaps. We all know that no matter if it’s a $300 pieced together jalopy or a $100,000 gem you can always run into issues. One loose screw (not the one behind the wheel) or an over looked clamp can leave you high and dry.
Pucker Factor! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rides become uneventful without them.
this is your best episode yet. subtly funny and very poignant. "Regret the things you do not the things you don't do!"
Thank you, appreciate you taking the time to respond.
@TheScenicRoute7 I'm going in October. I'm in Florida. my riding buddy is in Texas. It's a 10 day prep run for a 45 day, 10k trip around the USA in a sxs. I'm stoked. What drone do you have? thanks for the reply.
@@mattward8088 DJI phantom 4 pro. I plan on doing the AZPT in Oct/Nov, this time I’ll be pulling a trailer. I’d love to do longer trips but I dont like riding pavement. I’ve been trying to get away from work and go from glacier area down to SE Oregon or down through Utah. My biggest issue is staying on dirt for most of the trip.
@@TheScenicRoute7 we are doing a 10 day on October 6th/7th. Want to join the 2 of us?
@@mattward8088 that may be a good possibility. I travel slow-ish and camp. I just meander along and go where the trails take me. Let’s make a plan
Great video. Love the terrain you are riding in.
Thank you, appreciate that. The area is truly amazing. It’s a bit rough and technical but the views are amazing. Thanks for commenting.
That's a shame about your window. You would think engineering would've discovered that could happen. Nice country to ride in. Quite the variety of vehicles. Cheers, Kevin
It is one of many issues with the Polaris windshield. I’m trying to dig deep and find a manufacturer that can/will make me a piece of glass. It’s got an ever so slight curve to it so it’s hard to find someplace that can make it for a reasonable price. Yes the area is quite the gem. Video #2 will show a beautiful view.
Love to ride around Darby. I did an awesome ride from Darby to Schumaker Campground and Upper and Lower Twin lakes with a brief stop at Lake Como. Another good riding area is Thompson Falls to Murray ID then on to Prichard. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Kevin
I really love riding in the NW Montana area. Lots of area to explore and very scenic.

Epic adventure! It's so cool you can video with the GoPro and the drone. I'm of the vintage age and just have a boxful of polaroid's :) You dealt with the trail challenges with a great attitude. Look forward to your other adventures, Best regards, Kevin
Oh I have many Polaroids and old VHS tapes. Technology definitely makes it easier to make these videos. Thanks for the comments, appreciate ya.
Gotta love Western Montana and North Idaho! My favorite rides. I ride a bit down south around Darby. Much rather have mud, snow, and puddles than dust. Great video! Regards, Kevin
Ive riden around Philipsburg and Maxville and further South in Ellis, Idaho. I never experienced the dust in those area, maybe I just got lucky. It gets dusty in most areas later in the summer. I agree that NW MT and N ID are amazing riding areas. Have you ever ridden to Avery, ID from Darby, would love to make that ride? Thanks for commenting.
@@TheScenicRoute7 I haven't. I usually stay at Huckleberry BLM, boondock spot (like Marble Creek), or USFS campground and ride to Avery from there. I have ridden most of the way over the ridge from the St. Joe River to Wallace. May 1 this year I ran into too much snow for me at around the 5,200' level. Cheers, Kevin
Fun times! I like going on the weekdays in the early spring. The place is empty then. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Kevin
Been going there for years, mostly quads. You’re right about going during the weekdays. If ya ever see me, stop and say hello.
was that the columbia river you showed toward the end I am in florida so I am not familiar with your area what a awesome place
Yes that was the Columbia River, in Vantage, Wa.
I have a yamaha RMAX xtr and it only has 14 in the front and about 17 inches of suspension in the rear and it seems to do pretty well in the woops maby its the set up I run the front shocks firm and the rear soft so it wont buck
I’ve yet to find the best combination of tire pressure and shock settings to get the best of all worlds. I don’t do to much sand riding so it’s not something I’m overly concerned with.
I re wound the video again to the dog rolling over and it a very obedient dog, but his hesitation to roll and then the awkward roll was because it would be painful for him to dig his spin into the concrete to roll its very disturbing to see .
Appreciate the concern. Having him roll on concrete was probably not the best decision on my part. Thanks for the comment. We always try to do better.
dogs have to use their spine to pivot when they roll over so having the dog roll over on concrete was not a good idea. try to do it in grass dirt or carpet something soft .
Thanks for the pointer.
Really enjoy your content. Definitely had the right machine for this adventure.
Thank you I appreciate the kind words. Yeah I built her to handle some of the rougher stuff. It’s nice to be able to get into some of the less traveled areas.
Boy anything over 75 is to hot . Daniel you gotta tuffin up son you're kinda embarrassing yogi.
So this is the real trailer video. I was wondering why the other one cut off like it did. Great video of the trailer.
Yeah I messed up, sorry about the confusion. Thanks to Corey Williams for bringing it to my attention. Lesson learned. Glad you liked to full version.
@@TheScenicRoute7 All good. Very good.
Man I’m ready to get some guys together and take a trip.
I’ve been chomping at the bit myself. Weather is nice, time to get some miles on the machine.
Boy...I hope I would have your patience and calm in a situation like that! Curious thought...have you weighed your rig (with you and the pooch in it) to see where are at?
I haven’t weighed the machine with me and the dog but all the gear plus me and yogi I’d estimate to be around 7-800 lbs. If you deduct both back seats this brings the weight down a little. The issue wasn’t weight as much as it was the rear A-arms. The issue was corrected by Super ATV and A-Arms were replaced with a modified version. I’ve also reinforced the rear frame area and added stronger bolts. I also now pull a trailer. I go for the adventure and this is just part of it. Cooler heads prevail. Thank you for the comment.
Found your channel and really enjoyed your AZ trip. A question for you, if you explore and find these places that are truly amazing and you tell others where they are, then what made them unique/amazing is gone because more people will come. Living in Wyoming, I’ve found places where not many people knew about them, until it was posted on some social media site and it’s essentially game over. So many people and with people comes trash and new roads/driving off trail.
I do understand your concern. I feel it’s a double edge sword. The more of us that know of a place the more of us that can take care of it. I do worry myself sometimes about this issue but I have faith in humanity and believe that most of us will take care of and respect our riding areas. I don’t have a solution but maybe by being out there I can bring attention to not only the great areas but also ones that need attention. Educating the masses and bringing attention to problem areas. I can appreciate your concerns, thanks for commenting.
What a great series!! Are you planning on attempting it again at a later date?
Yes I do plan on giving it a go again. If everything works out, maybe fall of 2024.

Click bait, nothing to do with the trailer. (Not worth watching)
Was my first time towing the trailer. Wasn’t supposed to be about trailer as much as me seeing how the General was going to react to pulling it. There will be a full run through on the trailer in future videos. I don’t want to post an opinion video without first pulling it behind the General in some real world situations. I’ve since pulled it in a few locations since this video and will post a thorough video in the near future. Sorry if you felt this was click bait. It was not intended to be. Thank you for commenting.
What a beautiful campsite! You are living the good life!
It was definitely one for the books. Hopefully I get a few more this year that are just as spectacular.
You have done a lot of work with that dog, to have not bark or chance that deer.
Thank you, but he deserves all the credit. He is extremely intelligent. Not sure he’d treat a cow the same way..lol.
Did you unload in Valle Vista?
No,I started in Kingman. Only made it a little past Bouse.
@@TheScenicRoute7 I live right up the street from where you unloaded, that area is called Valle Vista, it is part of Kingman.
@@arizonapicker1836 oh ok sorry I didn’t realize that. By the golf course? Appreciate the info.
You ever see bears while riding out there....looks super nice
I’ve seen bears, moose, elk, deer. I know there are grizzlies in the area but never had the pleasure of seeing one myself.
I think you caryn too much weight🤔
Appreciate the response. It wasn’t a weight issue it was an alignment issue with the rear wheel camber. I’ve got it resolved. To much negative camber that I wasn’t able to adjust out plus the weight of the portals and bigger tires contributed to magnified stresses. New A-arms and additional strengthening at mounting points I believe resolved the issue.
I like the view from up on the roof. You hit that icy road and i thought that looks slick and steep drop off. A little pucker there i’m sure. Lol
Yeah that was definitely a spot that you wanted to be paying attention. I’m still learning the best location for the cameras. I need to get a wind muffler to keep the wind noise down. Appreciate the comments, thank you.
@@TheScenicRoute7 You sure did want to pay attention there. Wind noise is better than music overlay in my book.
Looks like a great ride!!
It was a great day for a ride. Montana has a lot of beautiful countryside. It was an area that I’m familiar with but have never been that direction. I’ve always stayed down along the Thompson River fishing. I recently learned that that road went to plains and figured it would be a good route to take me back to St Regis. Getting across Hwy 200 in Thompson Falls is not possible without being on Hwy 200. Going over the hill from St Regis to Plains and then up this way was the most sensible route.
That was my wife in the Samurai, thanks for helping.
Glad to be of assistance. Hope she didn’t have anymore issues.
Great video!! I think I would rather have a little mud, it’s so much better than the dust.
The one upside to riding alone is that you can usually outrun the dust. I do agree, a little moisture to keep down the dust makes the riding a bit more enjoyable.
Thank you for making these videos. I’m sure it takes up a lot of time to film as you ride and edit once you are done.
It’s definitely a lot of work. Thank you for the kind words. Makes it hard to ride with others that don’t want to stop all the time for filming. It’s convenient for me because I’m never in a rush to be anywhere and I’m not usually under any time constraints. As long as there interest I’ll keep making videos. I’m open to suggestions on places people would be interested in seeing.
@@TheScenicRoute7 I can see it takes time to stop and film. This channel should take off with the videos you make and time you put in. Keep doing what you are doing & don’t be afraid to make some videos on your ride and setup. I’m sure even some garage videos would be a hit.

great vid just like iam there later dude
Thank you. I really enjoy discovering new areas to ride.
Does the General feel a lil top heavy?
It didn’t really seem all that bad. Maybe I’m just used to it. The load was spread out evenly across the whole top so it didn’t seem to affect anything. I’m sure if I was to compare to a stick machine I’d probably notice. I am sitting wider so that definitely helps.
The trip wasn’t a total waste, you made a good video out of it. Might have been costly though with fuel and tires.
Appreciate that. The next couple videos from this trip will be a little more scenic and adventurous. Better to have the issues closer to home than half away across the country.
Just a heads up, I put the mud buster flairs on my General and they work great. Started out a little rough but looks like you were able to test out the rig in some different conditions.

Sorry about your breakdown But this is the main reason I stay as far away from Polaris products as possible I run Honda pioneers…this would never happen in 10k of Moab riding… Time the dump that thing before it gets dangerous
I rode quads for years and Honda was my machine of choice. I won’t completely blame Polaris on this one because I’ve modified it beyond its capabilities. When I do replace I’ll definitely be taking some things into consideration. Thanks, appreciate the reply.
What makes you say you modified it beyond its capabilities?
@@richiewells5505 I don’t think Polaris built it to have portals and bigger tires. Having the extra weight on a machine that wasn’t intended for it. I’ve since added some support and stiffened things up. I just think that adding all the extra to a stock machine was beyond the stock structures capabilities. It’s like anything, when you start modifying it’s only as strong as the weakest link.
@@TheScenicRoute7 Since the advent of CAD equipment it's very close to the specs advertized. In the T-square and slide rule days (my days LOL) engineers put in a larger safety factor.
