Toyota Land Cruiser | Performance Build
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER BUILD
Hi Everyone, Today I decided to tell you a little bit more about my recent Toyota Land Cruiser build. Why I choose the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series as my Overlanding Vehicle and What my aim is of having a vehicle like this?
Welcome back to the channel, I am Raymond Wright from Wright Overlanding and Photography. I do overlanding trips into Africa, I love photography and videography and I am based here in Pretoria, South Africa. Please remember to watch till the end of the video so that you don't miss out and please like, share, and subscribe to help grow my channel.
So here it is …The biggest reasons for me buying a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series are because of its reliability, durability, and parts availability. And very important the trust I have in this vehicle that it will not let me down. Afterall it is one of the most used vehicles in Africa.
The Land Cruiser I opted for comes standard with a 4.5L V8 Diesel engine.
So let me tell you more about the upgrades that I did. From a performance perspective the cruiser comes standard with 150 kW 450 NM at roughly 3200 rpm and this engine is capable of much more. I did stage 1 mapping which boosted the output to 203 kW and 837Nm at 2500 rpm. I also did the gearbox upgrade with genuine Toyota parts by extending the 2nd and 5th gears which brought down the rpms at 110km/h from 3000rpm to 2100rpm. A small but very important addition is a second diesel filter that was installed. The entire exhaust system was replaced with a Performance Free Flow Exhaust System.
To further increase drive comfort, I opted for the Old Man Emu Bp51 Suspension Upgrade, I kept with upgraded leaf springs at the back, and added air suspension for additional lift when towing. This made the drive comfort equal to that of the LC200.
With a wide selection, I opted to install the General Grabbers AT3 17ince Tires with D-Cepec rims. I found that the General Grabber AT3 drive comfort is very good and the noise levels of these tires are very low. Because of towing my trailer and caravan the additional weight has an impact on the brake system, to enhance the braking system, I upgrade the brake disk set and pads to Power brake. For the same reasons I upgrade the clutch to a heavy duty Excedy system.
With poor road conditions experiences on overlanding trips up in Africa, I have added an additional underbody engine protection plate, diff plate, and the gearbox plate.
The interior upgrade was just out of this world. For those of you that has driven a LC 97 series before, you would know that they are not the quietest vehicles specifically at high speeds. To curb the noise in the cab, I soundproofed the entire cab, installed a ONENAV 9-inch multimedia radio with Apple Car play a Kicker speaker and sub hoover system, reverse camera, with tire monitoring system directly on the radio. Further I installed the Toyota Legend 45 Steering wheel to have quick access controls available, with cruise control installed.
Other interior additions are the Caprivi Limited Heritage Range seat covers a roof console for additional storage and a very important Dometic 11L interior fridge for those long trips.
External additions are two Front Runner roof racks, Alucab 270 awning, Quickpitch shower and Geyser, iKamper Mini roof top tent, LAS snorkel, ARB Summit bulbar, Planetron Single LED Spotlights, 5,5ton Tungsten Synthetic Winch. Goby-X Desert Armor Rear bumper, Goby -X Spare wheel carrier, BushTech canopy, ARB compressor, ONCA land Cruiser rock sliders, double jerry cans and holder, gas bottle bracket, maxtraxs, National Luna Dc-Dc system, with lithium-ion battery, External 42L Fresh Water tank and an internal 50L water tank, load bins, perimeter light, External Flexo Power solar panels, 90L National Luna fridge freezer and many smaller items in and around the vehicle.
Thank you for watching till the end of the video. For your convenience I have listed all the equipment in the description below.
I am looking forward to my next adventure which I will bring you exciting footage and experiences through my travels in Africa. Thank you for your support and remember to like, share, and subscribe.

Hello Raymond, Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience and your awesome photos! Could you let us know which season you were there, and which month you would recommend for visiting Zimanga to get the most out of the Umgodi and Tamboti Overnight Hide sessions and see the most wildlife at night? Thank you in advance!

Hallo Patricia, excuse the belated response and thank you for reaching out. We were there in November 2022. An amazing time of the year which I shall recommend. It was slightly hot during that time of year but the veld was green. Even going there in winter June/July I would think will be okay. Zimanga is an amazing place with friendly people and the hides are spectacular. You will not be disappointed. Please keep in touch and also kindly visit my website at www.raymondwright.co.za.

@Raymond Wright Overlanding & Photography Hi Raymond. That is good to know. I am an absolute Land Cruiser 79 Series fanatic, and mainly watch your videos to see your mint Cruiser... 😉 😜. What is your average consumption in town, fully loaded on the open road, and in low range?

Thanks, much appreciated 🙏, Open road Cruiser only just under 7km/l, with Caravan/Trailer about 5,5km/l and thick sand with Trailer about 3.5km/l🫣
