Yes the mosquitos definitely decided to show up the week in the Stevens pass area.
Good to know!
Thank you! appreciate you guys.

This is totally not a video about roller coasters. Good name for one though.
You're correct - rollercoasters are just a metaphor.
Happy birthday 🎂
Thanks for the comprehensive break down!
Glad it was helpful!
Happy birthday 🎂
Thanks for the insightful forecast. Regarding the atmospheric river last weekend - it didn't seem to produce much precipitation over Seattle, but the gusty conditions on Sunday were quite unexpected. It was strong enough to down many trees. What was the driver of that?
Thank goodness its gonna be wet.
What is solar maximum?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_maximum It is the maximum point in solar activity during the 11-year solar cycle. The last one was 2014, and it was one of the weakest. This time it is supposed to be 2025.
Thank you for this detail on the forecast. It was illuminating, and provides a good summary on possible recreational activities.
You're very welcome
I believe Mission ridge will be open next weekend. Flamingo closing day scheduled for the 28th.
We missed that! Thanks for the info.
thank you for these!
Love these overviews! I learn so much :)
Glad you like them!
TY For this!
Thank you so much guys! Great content for a fellow outdoorsman in Seattle
Our pleasure!
Thank you so much, your videos are so helpful! I am going up to the Whistler, BC area next weekend (29th-3rd). Couldn't quite see it in the models, but do you know if this weather system is going to be as impactful up there?
It should dump a good amount of snow! Maybe not as much as the WA Cascades, but conditions still look great for your trip!
Exciting times! The rain/snow fraction on the freezing level forecast is across the entire watershed. E.g. half of the Snoqualmie watershed is below 2000' (and only 10% is above 4000'). You might want to look at a higher elevation watershed which would be more representative of popular mountain destinations. E.g. 50% of the Upper Cowlitz and Sauk watersheds are below 4000'.
Good point. I was more pointing out the freezing levels rather than the specific precipitation type.
⛷️
Great assessment, appreciate this!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you guys for putting the effort into compiling all of this information into easily digestible content. It is often very useful for me and helps with my decision making in the mountains. Keep up the awesome work! It is much appreciated.
Thanks for the support!
Great info guys! Thanks.

Its one thing to see bare ground on rainshadowed Hurricane Ridge but Mt Baker is very wet and to see bare ground in the middle of winter is astounding. Stevens and Snoqualamie pass have more snow than Mt Baker right now usually its the other way around. Whats really sobering is the 1999 world record snowfall was recorded just about 700 feet above where that picture was taken. For a location to go from world record snow to patchy snow in a couple decades is pretty scary. I realize this is much warmer than the typical year and might be a few more decades before this kind of winter becomes average but its still very disheartening.
Yeah, it is very sobering how susceptible Baker is to warming temperatures. Snoqualmie and Stevens have bother been more resilient with the easterly flow. I wonder how accurate of a predictor of the future this year is.
alls i want in life is 2-3 inches of snow every day and a little free time to ski the pass 😌👌🏼❄️
2-3 per day would make for great skiing and fewer layers in the snowpack!
Nice work, I love it when you do these kinds of vids! Another part of the story is that the easterly winds can force the warmer air from the west to rise up over the top of the cold eastern airmass, creating lift that can wring out more precipitation.
Good point!
Im enjoying the nitty gritty understanding of the mechanics of the PNW weather patterns! Keep it up! So much I never knew!
Thanks, will do!
The question I really want answered is “who can I see about getting MORE snow at Snoqualmie Pass this year?”
Haha the question we all are wondering!
Thanks for doing these videos. It seems a couple of these videos have been produced to help talk people off the "there will never be any snow, anymore" ledge. I am an optimist but it has been a challenging year for quality skiing, off piste
You're welcome! This definitely has been a rough winter, and we probably won't catch up. But it's important to remember that on an average winter, Snoqualmie gets a lot of snow!
Snoqualamie pass gets alot more snow than most 3,000 ft spots in the cascades because cold air from eastern Washington tends to get trapped at the pass and the snow level is lower near the pass. This effect is most pronounced in Dec and Jan and goes away by early April when the sun is strong enough to really heat eastern Washington. Snoqualamie pass can also get some nasty ice storms when the cold air pool is not as deep. The snowfall varies considerably from winter to winter at Snoqualamie pass. Some winters have more warm pineapple express type storms that scour out the cold air and the pass gets rain. Snoqualamie pass is likely to see a drastic decrease in snowfall in the comming years as global warming warms the planet alittle more. Paradise is alittle more resilent to global warming because of its higher elevation.
These are exactly the topics we cover (with the exception of future climatology)!
This is how weather works. The difference between two extremes is normal! Not every year is going to be normal.
But the trend year over year is that it's getting hotter and hotter
Sad!
I am curious how the low snow pack may impact summer climbing season on Mt Baker.
Typically that means the prime climbing season is earlier because the glaciers melt out sooner, as do the approach trails. If you're planning any trips, that can be helpful to keep in mind!
My guess is it'll be a better May/June than last year! I really hated how squishy it was last year. This year it'll be more bare. And hey the road on the north side is back open!
One wonders what will happen this summer if the low snow pack continues
Who knows! Hopefully we have a cool spring at least that slows down the melt out.
Just say no to the Pineapple Express!!
this is great thank you. Getting annoyed by the snowpack in the Olympics
Yeah, the warmer temperature hit it harder there.
Thanks, Gents! With our snowpack starting off so low during this El Nino, it's great to see us get a bunch. In the event you are interested, Leon Simons was on Nate Hagens's podcast yesterday. It is a fascinating look into shipping and other aerosols and how they're affecting our climate. It's well worth a watch.
Thanks for the tip!
Can confirm how cold Alpental was on Saturday! With the right clothing it was great though, almost nobody there!
This is interesting. Good coverage, guys. It's notable to say that all of this weather is within the range of normal variations and extremes. (Climate is average weather at a place including variations and extremes). Many climatologists don't even get interested until trends occur over decades or centuries. Meanwhile, keep observing and stay warm!
Definitely! Good to remember.

I got frostbite on 2 fingers skiing at Crystal Mountain today.
Did you get them amputated?
thank you both very much. well done!

Awesome!
Glad you think so!
thank you!
You're welcome!
who the hell is ser darnold of house rawdog
No idea lol
Another item of interest about heavy snowfall is the anecdote from Snoqualmie Pass back in the 1970s ( cant recall the date or even the year, but it happened). There was a 44" snowfall that stranded several cars. A VW bug was parked along the road and got completely covered. The rotary snowplow came along and essentially ate the unseen car. Luckily no one was in it. Imagine the awful noise @
Wow! If only we could get another decade like the 70s in terms of snowfall...
Good job, guys. Regarding wind gusts, consider this from Camp Muir a decade ago: This past Saturday [February 12, 2011] I checked the data and my lower jaw hit my chest! THUNK!!! (no, I wasn’t up at Camp Muir….however I once was knocked down in a measured 95 mph wind and then blown along the ground as a human tumbleweed.. ) Saturday I was snug inside after a morning run that I finished shortly before the storm hit here, so when the wind picked up I thought to check the Muir data. Here is what I found: peak wind was 155 mph at about 3 pm Saturday (the highest I have noted in over 4 years since the station went in). That is the minimum wind velocity for a Cat. 5 hurricane (although wind in the Saffir-Simpson hurricane rating scale must be wind of at least 1 minute duration, and this storm was definitely no hurricane, which is a tropical storm). For that hour the average wind was 132 mph and the minimum was 107 mph. But even more astounding is that for 27 hours straight, the peak wind never dropped below 100 mph, for ten straight hours the average wind was over 100 mph, and for 23 straight hours the average wind never dropped below the minimum velocity for hurricane force (74 mph continuous), and finally 34 straight hours the minimum wind only once dropped below 42 mph. Today’s maximum wind in Bellingham has not gotten that high. I could bore you with even more stats. of this remarkable storm, but be further impressed in knowing that the temp. at Muir during all of this wind was in the teens or single digits (F), making for some brutal windchills. One can only imagine conditions at the summit.
Wow, that was truly an incredible wind storm!
Totally awsome!
Thanks!
you guys seem very educated, more than me at least on weather.
Thank you! We love talking about weather!
Great information for pnw powder hounds, excellent and thanks, between you and Chris Tomer that's all I need to really have a heads up on incoming storms.
Great stuff guys! Keep it up!
Thanks so much!
Yes!!
Awesome video. 🙂👍
Thank you 👍
