    An important reason sketchup is 'better' for initial design than revit is because the learning curve to fluency is more easily achieved with it ... allowing users to 'get the tool out of the way' sooner. Revit is a grand piano: it takes more practice/focus and, by the time fluency arrives, an operator is able to play elaborate orchestral pieces with it ... and usually prefers to. In such a metaphor, sketchup is more a harmonica. Consider this: when a pencil is in your hands, you think about what the next line REPRESENTS without any thought of how to make that line. no CAD tool is as direct, natural, & effortless as a pencil and, to some ways of thinking, the less a tool preoccupies the act of mark-making, the more spontaneous and free-thinking the mark-maker can be.

    I don’t understand why a channel for each phase is any benefit. Maybe actually trying to use Teams the way AEC would use it could help rather than showing a completely sterile environment showing people how to use Teams as a more complicated file server. You showing your own internal teams later on is great, but you’re using it in a very standard corporate structure of some basic departments of which there is no shortage of UA-cam videos and webinars showing best practices for that. We are designing and managing hundreds of projects per year and I don’t get the feeling you understand the level of complexity we face trying to manage and organize. I don’t mean to be a negative Nancy, because there is an absolute need for AEC firms to embrace the cloud and I appreciate the effort. Maybe working with architects to do a combo webinar/case study where you have industry professionals show how they have incorporated these tools into their practice.

    As an operations manager/BIM manager of a 30ish person firm, we only upgrade every 2 years for our typical projects and usually after a main patch, not just a hotfix. Depending on your harddrive size, having 4 years of Revit versions will reduce storage on your SSD and cause confusion with the staff. Upgrading every year is too disruptive unless there's killer time saving feature we must have (like the path of travel command in 2022) that's useful for life safety plans. Training would be required for this feature. In a healthy 25+ person firm, it's super beneficial to have an in office BIM Manager. I can't stress this enough. That person would be responsible for leading testing, implementation, standards update, training that is specific to your company's workflow. Firms that refuse to have one because they don't see the value makes me want to pull my hair out. They're worth their weight in gold and will easily pay for themselves with the increase in firmwide performance.

      Also remember that when you start a BIM project with consultants, everyone consultant using Revit should be on the same year. If it needs to be upgraded, every consultant would need to upgrade if the project is a large project and takes a few years to complete. For the most part, I would not recommend upgrading those projects because it's working already, let the cycle take it's course. Otherwise, it's just adding potential new problems that's not part of the project contract and reducing everyone's project profitability. If you're using BIM360 as the collaboration tool, the process is easier because you can upgrade on BIM360 but it still requires coordination and people spending man hours on this. Most of the time, it's not worth the time.

    Good stuff. I'm adept in Sketchup but I wouldnt shrug off Revit. If youre a student looking into an architecture/archviz career, like I am, it's pretty clear that most firms require Revit as a prerequisite, while Sketchup is regarded as an additional bonus skill.

  • @Shivermetimbrz

    That was a great video. Basic and informative. Exactly what I needed to hear. I bought a top spec MacBook Pro laptop in 2019 thinking it would be more than perfect for me for at least 5-8 years. Didn’t realise all construction companies predominantly use revit, bluebeam etc… all windows. I’ve been trying to make mine work but I think I’ve hit a brick wall. Hearing old mate say parallels is 3 and boot camp is 5, that pretty much sums up what I didn’t want to admit. I was going to get a high end external graphics card but I think I’ll just get a dedicated windows laptop. Thank you for the video

    • @alex.maxwell
      @alex.maxwell 3 роки тому

      Actually, bootcamp is the most efficient way, but this way you might end up running Windows 100% of time. Not bad, actually, considering that you have nice Apple hardware. So, why not use your MBP 2019 in 100% Windows mode and enjoy it? The problem is as you try to find some Windows laptop to replace a macbook, you will never find same design, quality and service for a similar Windows device.
