I am a keyboardist and composer based in Tacoma, WA, where I am Assistant Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University. I am a specialist in music of the English Renaissance and early 20th century France, but I am excited by music of all eras and styles. This channel presents a variety of music, especially of pieces that are not widely available on UA-cam.
From 2019-2024, I stewarded the only surviving instrument built by innovative organbuilder Joseph Alley. Many recordings on this channel were made with the intent to preserve this special document of early American organbuilding in New England.

Samuel Scheidt: Helft mir, Gotts Güte preisen (Görlitzer Tabulatur-Buch)
Justin J. Murphy-Mancini performs "Helft mir, Gotts Güte preisen" from the Görlitz Tablature by Samuel Scheidt (SSWV 449).
In 1650, Samuel Scheidt released his last published collection of pieces, the Görlitzer Tabulatur-Buch. The city of Görlitz supported Scheidt financially in this endeavor with a commission of at least 40 thalers. The collection, published originally in open score, provides working organists with harmonized examples of 100 chorales, a small number of which are given alternate harmonizations.
In the preface, Scheidt wrote, "Since I had been urgently asked to carry out this work, I considered it my duty to comply with this request as best I could, and have compose a whole hundred of the most current psalms, sacred songs, and hymns in four voices with basses and inner parts, some of them several times, in such a fashion as has never been accomplished before either by other or by me; I wrote these compositions, as well as some others, many years ago in [Italian organ tablature] form which organists can easily transcribe them into the ordinary [German] tablsture and can play and perform them in the church and at home."
These settings offer a comprehensive look at Scheidt's contrapuntal mastery at the small scale, in contrast with his monumental Tabulatura Nova a quarter century earlier. The collection can be compared to J.S. Bach's many settings of the same chorales, providing an education in counterpoint and harmony of the mid-17th century.
I am recording and releasing all of the chorale settings in the Görlitz Tablature during liturgical year 2025, performed on the Paul Fritts organ at Pacific Lutheran University. The project will be a documentation both of this valuable historical music document and the array of manual stops on this organ, which was inspired by the instruments Scheidt would have known.
Registration - Great: 4' Spitzflöte
Recorded at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA.
Organ: The Gottfried and Mary Fuchs Organ, Paul Fritts and Co. Op. 18, 1998.

Hans Buchner: Puer natus est nobis

Justin J. Murphy-Mancini performs "Puer natus est nobis" by Hans Buchner. This work takes the Introit for Christmas day and uses it as the basis for a motet-style piece in five parts, including a complex part for the pedals. Unlike the music based on a cantus firmus, this composition is exceptional for imitating the parody style of mass composition that was firmly in vogue by the 1530s. I selec...

Franz Tunder: Jesus Christus, unser Heiland
Переглядів 80Місяць тому
Justin J. Murphy-Mancini performs "Jesus Christus, unser Heiland" by Franz Tunder (1614-67). These three verses of one of Luther's communion hymns represent some of Tunder's most concise and focused contrapuntal writing. The first begins with an unusual pedal solo and a double pedal part, with the chorale melody placed in the upper pedal voice. Unusually, the fourth phrase of the chorale is pre...

Adolphus Hailstork: Prelude, from Suite for Organ
What a great project, Justin! I'm looking forward to listening to your performances every day!
They'll be about twice a week, though you can expect more at Christmas and Easter!
Nice organ.
Thank you! It's a very special instrument.
nice night performance. i know the sort of concentration that's required here and how that feels when sustained over a long and lonely period of time. excellent recording of your piano. where did you source the sheet music?
If you're interested in music by the Wandelweiser composers, I'd visit wandelweiser.de. For getting specific scores, I would use that site to reach out to individual composers.
💗
phenomenal!
I heard somebody play this piece at St. Clotilde in Paris last April which was Tournemire's church. It was an amazing experience to hear it on the organ for which it was written. Every since then, this is my favorite composition of Tournemire. You do it reall justice.
Fun piece. Turning pages for this tonight at Methuen
thanks, Richard! it sounds great in the hall
A nice presentation of this beautiful piece, thanks.
Lovely! So glad you are enjoying the Woodberry at Ste. Marie. Thank you for sharing this clip.

Bardzo interesujący utwór .Mało wykonywany .
Have the Bor works been published?
Yes, Ediciones ARE is an online publisher for Venezuelan music that has her complete output available for free. The site is in Spanish but easy to navigate.
Beautiful playing!Thank you for presenting this wonderful music.
great playing! very pleasing rendering. God bless you
This is incredible, you've done a beautiful rendition of this song, you've translated it expertly to the piano
Incredible stuff, very well done! By any chance do you have sheet music for this? It's my favorite DQXI song and I'd love to play it for myself!
I found a copy of all the music for the game used on Ebay. A search for the game plus piano brought it up. I think it was out of print, but used copies are often available.
I just got my own copy of the DQXI score for piano from Play Asia, and they sell a few of the other's too. Hope you can get one!
This is absolutely amazing to listen to! I listened to this with my eyes closed before bed. So good!! ⛵💖💖💖💖
Thanks!
Very good performance of a challenging work!
Thanks!
Amazing! I wish I could play piano just so I could play Dragon Quest music for others
Thank you for your kind words!
Wowww! amazingly played and superbly balanced
Great song. Loved listening to you play, Justin.
👋 hello I would like to purchase the piano sheet, do you know where 😊 thank you
Ediciones ARE have all of Bor's piano music available for download. I hope that helps!
Thank you so much, you performance was beautiful
Beautifully played. I also really appreciate the effort you took in giving such a detailed overview of this piece. 👏🏼 👌🏼 🙌🏽
thank you! it's one of my favorites and full of fun details
its been determined that this is my favorite performance of this piece
thank you so much! it's one of my favorite pieces of florence price.
You should upload that 5th piece separately - it's BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you for bringing us this wonderful piece! We all know the 'famous' variations, but how nice it is to have an alternative for those who are not concert level. The similarities between the two, though, are several. And what a beautiful, articulate organ that is! Bravo!
Thanks so much! The organ is very special - the last surviving instrument by a local builder.
Love the Dupré, Justin!
Thank you for this lovely performance.
Beautiful, Justin
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this fun and fabulous recording of these excellent pieces!
Thank you so much for this -- I fell in love with these pieces when I edited them, even though the very poorly preserved manuscript taxed my eyes and made me crabby. The music is the reward, and I'm so glad you like this set!
Thanks so much for making them available!
Thanks for doing that hard but meaningful work! Have my students working on these as a group. I have a question - in No. 6 - the last measure of the first page is still indicated to be in the treble clef (right hand part), but I actually experimented and played it in the bass clef and it sounded like that might be what was meant? I hear that Justin here played it as if it were in the bass clef. Do you think there should be a bass clef at the beginning of that measure? I have a Schirmer version (I think it's print on demand). As the expert, what do you think?! Thanks so much!
Hi! Sorry for not seeing this sooner. In the Schirmer edition, I see a bass clef marked at measure 10, so the whole line is in the bass clef. Let me know if that's not what you were looking for.
Thanks for posting the link to this, Justin!
Thank you, Justin. That was a wonderful lift! I actually remember one Christmas where an aunt harnessed the horse to the sleigh (yes, with bells) and we, well wrapped, went off in the early evening to find our Christmas Tree. That was in Sidney, Maine, and I'm guessing it was about 1948. Anderson's piece always brings me that memory.
