Kayak outriggers, very strong, cheap and they work!

Home made outriggers for my kayak using nothing more that plumbing pipes, clips etc. Click here to see them on the water ua-cam.com/video/oncyXoSQtpY/v-deo.html Update; been using them for a year now and really please with how they perform. One good tip, lightly grease the joints to help them slide out when removing the outriggers. Someone recently came up with a good idea for making the 'nose ...

We were kayaking around Porthpean (Cornwall) when we went into a sea cave and was met by this friendly seal. He followed us about half a mile where I made this video on my iPhone.
Driftwood Sculpture 2
Переглядів 7 тис.13 років тому
driftwood sculptures I make here in Plymouth, England. Many are made to order and the rest I make up as I go along. All the driftwood used comes from beaches in Devon and Cornwall. The dragonfly at the end has had its body covered in glod leaf.

Couple nearly washed away, Porth - Cornwall
Переглядів 50 тис.16 років тому
Stormy afternoon at Porth in Cornwall. Just happened to catch a couple watching the big waves as they caught it full on.
I wonder what the stability on these would be like for standing
I was able to stand up and cast from the kayak (calm day) Not something I would normally do but just wanted to see if it was possible.
@rick928 Hi, seeing as this was such an old video, I didn't really expect a response. Are you able to put both feet and stand on one side of the kyak with the outriggers, I'm just curious because I'm thinking about making mine the length of my kyak (for greater stability) and making them far enough out they didn't affect my paddle stroke. Although I'm worried it might be harder to get going once in the water, any thoughts? I think even now, your design is by far the best out there
@@codyashcraft7983 I am able to stand on one side but with the kayak being narrow it's not a stance you would naturally take (one foot either side is more natural / comfortable ) Those pontoons give tremendous buoyancy and as such it's just about impossible to flip the kayak. I'm please with this design as it gives me fantastic buoyancy along with the pontoons being 'out of the way' plus I always have the option to use the kayak without them if I wish.
@rick928 thanks, I'll be doing it your way then
Well done mate.
Placing hot sand in a pvc tube you can shape it how ever you want. The hotter the sand the more it will become playable.
Very well done job on those out riggers. I plan to get a Jonny bass 100 and throw an outboard on the back. As I plan to go open water on it I was looking to buy a kit to make it more like a mini trimaran however I think I am sold on your workmanship. And will likely end up building it myself. Thanks
That's what I keep wandering about the paddle hitting the pontoon, but you eliminated that problem, I love it.
Best design yet. What size is your kayak ‽?
very nice build, congrats! how much will this slow you down in the water? and how do you assess the correct height for them?
Bloody Good job . Good fishing to you
Man you killed it with these.
Very nice work!
You should license this product and sell them on the market. 🎉
@05:34 "Toasty!"
nice , a diy , did had a test before showing . sorry for the English i am Belgium guess it is a good excuse ;-) lol
What is the main float?
Some very good ideas here. Nicely done!
Do these increase the weight capacity of the kyak too?
Although I designed them for stabilization they do allow you to increase the load limit but at the slight cost of drag ( barely noticeable though)
Dude, how about a parts list in the description?
Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely brilliant...
I got to say . Your outriggers are the best i have ever seen. Great job old man! Or young man,im old too. Very impressive. Just have to say. Im going out on lake superior in late september. your idea is great!. Mine wont be the the same. But the same.. Thank you!
Pros and cons to outriggers buddy ?... I'm new to kayaking, I'm a bit guy and think a tad more boyancy wouldn't be a bad thing
The pro is definitely the added stability, the only con is if you want to go between narrow rocks (close to shore, exploring)
Having tried plumbing pipe, and even Round barrel pontoons, there is one fundamental design flaw is that when buoyancy goes over 50% of a round curve it wants to be a submarine. That is why boats keep flaring up to the gunwales, exponetial buoyancy. (Max). Look at what traditional outrigger are. A piece of curved lightweight, palm trunk or something that won’t take effort to make airtight. Pool noodles ,foam, as we call them in oz. Australia. Tried coke bottles taped together with tape. All I can see on UA-cam is peoples attempted efforts, with no performance follow up videos. Look for results videos before you watch the “how too” .(stay on line as long as possible) I’m just saying
Outstanding job!
Looks like it would work better if the attachment points would be sturdier. It looks like it should fit further into the other pipe. Great video.
How did you make the floats
4" plastic tube, with turned oak end caps.
Best DIY example out there! Great job!!
Smart! Well done.
Good Job !!! Thank you !!
Nice job , thanks for sharing 👍🏻
How did you get the bolts in side ??
I could get my arms inside before I put the end caps on
i ment on the kyack side
@@grantthebomb165 if I couldn't reach inside the kayak I used those 'rubber fixings' designed for use on kayaks. Sorry I can't remember their proper name but they are basically a rubber plug with a metal thread in the middle that expands when you tighten the bolt.
now this is what i call craftmanship
Genious
Brilliant job 💯
Check out the big brain on Rikkie .......... bloody well done mate !
Hello again.... do you may can post a link, where you got the salar charger from?? Many thanks 😊 🙏
Ebay, number 391318364802
The best outriggers I have ever seen on any kayak. Outstanding and very well taught through. Trying to duplicate for my Galaxy. Well done sir, very well done indeed.
Great video. Question: Are the pipes "empty" or are there some floating devices inside ( pool noddles)? Many thanks 😊 🙏
They are hollow. Filling them with foam would serve no purpose. Also, being hollow (empty) allows you to 'hear' if you have a small leak (you can hear water sloshing inside when attaching/removing the outriggers) you then know you need to fix any leaks before it gets any worse.
@@rick928 Many thanks mate. Will try my best to get it done like yours. 👍
Great design!
Will the stabilizer help anyone from shark attacks
Telescopic fishing rod!! Brilliant mate! Going to copy this one too. Just a really good practical yet simple idea! Thanks for sharing another gem!
I have clicked the like button on many comments to this vid (both 1 & and 2) but have to do you justice by saying the same: You have some really nice ideas and do a nice quality finish to your additions. Thank you for sharing your innovative and yet simple ideas! Love the anchor stay and the sponge idea but your first aid kit, storage hatch … actually I risk not mentioning some that also deserve mention so will stop by just saying thanks for sharing some very good ideas! Brilliant! Thanks mate 😃👍🏽🎣
The best I’ve seen! 👍👍 Thank you for the instructional video. Best wishes to you from Texas. ✌️👌🎣
NICE work! Built like a battle tank but yet lightweight and corrosion resistant!
One of the best I’ve seen yet
Outriggers (Stabilizers/pontoons) should be standard equipment for all kayaks...
Where i can buy those accesories , can you share the link site
They are just standard plumbing (water) pipes etc. You will find them at any DIY store or even on Ebay.
Exactly what I have been looking for as I am going kayaking with two dogs! Perfect 👌
what kind of plastic clamps are those ? For what are they originally meant ? They look neat...
The clamps are what is used to hold the pipes to a wall. Where you can buy the pipe, you will find those clamps.
@@rick928 OK... they really look neat. Here in Italy the mode is clip-on grey plastic clamps
Them are nice 👍🏻 units. Put that style on my sun dolphin ss 10’. Thanks for information.
Beautiful outrigger, best I ever seen on UA-cam. Fantastic works!! wat are the diameter of the main arms n outrigger pipes?
The arms are 42mm and the floats are 100mm, all standard plumbing piping.
@@rick928 thank u so much! U r brilliant 👏
