I remember watching that 'under the rim sky hop' live. When you saw it as a kid, it was just... WOW. But, before you realize it... you're 40 years older, and... it's become legend. YIKES! It's a combination of how high Dr. J elevated in conjunction with how much velocity he had on the slam. Walton is well above them rim, but as Dr. J has more forward momentum, he's up just high enough over Walton that, combined with his arm length and velocity, that Walton had no chance. It's also the way Dr. J cocked his arm back and had enough elevation hang to delay his release until the last moment It's almost as if Dr. J was defying physics! And it sure didn't hurt that Dr. J has huge hands and could easily palm the ball.
