Adjusting Your Audios Dynamic Range
Another long video, but there were many things I felt I wanted to go over with regards to this, because with so many music creators (producers, mixing engineers, mastering engineers) this is a major subject and even with this video I felt I only scratched the surface...There are so many creative things your can do with compressors and expanders, for instance side-chaining or gating a synth pad to a drum beat, this video is really to get at explaining the fundamentals of dynamic range adjustments.
Video Table of Contents:
0:00 Intro
2:13 What is Dynamic Range?
3:37 Types of Dynamic Range Adjustments?
5:03 Downwards Compression
5:24 Upwards Compression
5:38 Upwards Expansion
5:51 Downwards Expansion
6:07 Transfer Curves for the Types of Dynamic Range Adjustments
8:35 Brief Audible and Visual Examples of Each Type
12:19 Settings for a Compressor or Expander
17:25 Basic Creative Examples Using Compressors or Expanders
24:36 Fourier Series and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Frequency Components of a Complicated Waveform, and How Compression Adjusts the Timbre of a Waveform.
33:04 Closing Remarks
Here's another great book I highly recommend. Mastering Audio, the Art and the Science, 3rd Edition, Bob Katz. This book does a great job with explaining how to manipulate dynamic range as well as sooo many others things.
If you wanna get more into understanding discrete time signal processing (DSP) this book is a great introduction as well as much further learning, Discrete-Time Signal Processing, Alan V. Oppenheim, Ronald Schafer, with John R. Buck. I actually had a class with Ron Schafer, tremendous opportunity with one of the many founding people of DSP.
Thanks for watching, please subscribe and like. Also, please comment on anything that I can go into further with this subject or for future videos.

Your Initial Stages of Artistic Development
Переглядів 665 років тому
Thanks for stopping by my UA-cam page. I also wanted to say when the artist (in this example an artist learning to play an instrument) is in the third stage of their initial development, "exploring your style", that artist is now taking certain techniques or licks that they learned on their instrument that they enjoyed and are now starting to incorporate that more into their playing. Certain ru...

Hey everyone, just bear with me as these are my first videos I am doing on UA-cam and I am trying to work on my style with editing them...it's a process like anything else. I know they are a bit long, but I think they can be very helpful in your artistic development. 👋Excellent!! Figured out most of it but this really set the historical and operational context. I had to make sense of the various units (Volts/dBu/dBFS) to calculate amplifier limiter settings on a processor. Thanks!!

Thank you for the detailed information. When calibrating a VU meter from a digital console how do you know how many volts the signal you are sending is without a volt meter?

Thank you for a very informative video. The VU meter in relation to dBFS in DAWs is particularly useful information. I reckon this single video could be turned into a 10 part (potentially paid) course for beginners, simplifying each subject a little (I felt some assumptions of knowledge were made). On a side note, I found the audio gate distracting.

There are 100s of videos out there explaining this. Out of all of those, this one is the one that explains it the right way. Simple and with actually real world examples, not just perfect world examples. This made everything click. Thanks!

My Behringer shows -5dB peak, and RTA and improvised VU, at the same time, seems shows around -12... At the back is +10dBu and +22dBu switck for mic too. So many things to understand.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for when I se out to research this topic. Subscribed. I think the length and technical depth was perfect. I have a technical background, so I was really looking for the actual details of how these all worked together, rather than the high level gloss over I saw when reading on a couple blogs. I'd love to see more of this technical depth on more music and audio related topics.
