It's time to invent a remote release mechanism for these types of traps. Since you obviously had a phone with you, a bluetooth one would probably be best. Or better yet, use a trap that doesn't wound the animal. A wounded animal is very unlikely to cooperate with you.

Stop setting these traps for innocent animals that you're not meaning to trap to get trapped. This is horrible.
