If I was american, I would like live in Salida and Buena Vista. I went in Buena Vista in 2019, but unfortunaly, not at Salida. Next time, I hope. Have a fine day.
Happy New Year from France !
As someone who grew up in Florence it's never been pronounced Saleeda....always Salida. Not even by Spanish people...lol

Canon City also has the Arkansas River, which flows through it. Canon City has much more river walking and parks than Buena Vista or Salida put together. A lot of the Arkansas River that flows through Salida and BV is private property. Canon City is much more scenic and more things to do than BV and Salida put together! Salida and Buena Vista are for old retired hippies that have plenty of money and time on their hands who just want to sit around and drink. Canyon City also has a small college more reasonably priced housing and more available housing than these old people towns like BV and Salida.
Don't move to either of these towns. They are both the same! I used to live and work in BV. Both towns have no housing. Both towns are for rich, old retired people. They roll up the sidewalks by 6:00 pm. Nowhere for the average working person to live. Landlords expect potential renters to jump through hoops and beg and grovel to live in their precious properties!! You will need to put down 3 times the rent as a deposit to move into an apartment or house. So if the rent is $2000 a month, you will need to put down $6000 in cash just to move into a place that you will never own. There is one landlord there in Salida(you know who I'm talking about), a female who owns several properties, and she treats potential renters as if they are entering a raffle! All these people(potential renters) show up at the same time wanting the same apartment, which is a very awkward situation. She basically makes you beg and grovel or says you have the place and then changes her mind. This is the mindset of people who live and own property in Buena Vista and Salida. These towns are the same! It's even worse in the summertime. These towns and landlords cater to the summer tourists. Both of these towns are for old, rich morning people. The city police in Salida state patrol, and sherrif have nothing to do but to find reasons to pull people over, especially the main highway between Salida and BV. Houses are ridiculously priced, assuming you can even find one for sale.Nothing is open in either town after 10:00 pm. You can not even find food or water after 10:00pm. The businesses in Salida, in particular, are closing up left and right, especially the restaurants! Nice towns to visit but forget about living there. Closest civilization is Canon City, about 50 miles east of Salida. Salida does have a Walmart, and that's about it. There is nothing really to do in either town. Oh, Salida does have a bowing alley if it hasn't shut down yet.
Both towns are practically the same! Buena Vista has a state prison in town, so that's decent money, but then there is nowhere to live! What the wealthy people do is buy some land and then build a big house from the ground up. Then, they don't live in their house, only for the summer or vacation. It's really a shame, All these unoccupied mansions in this county are just sitting around and then the working man can't even afford an apartment to rent or a house to rent. Oh, and then there's the high-priced electricity! Electricity in this country is ridiculous! There's the housing community in Buena Vista called " The Farm". $500,000 for a 3 bedroom. Manufactured townhouses with a tiny, tiny back yard(no grass or turf, just sand). If you want to buy a townhouse, you will be on a waiting list, forever!!! There is plenty of land around BV, just nothing being built!! The electric heaters( no gas) in these townhousees are near the ceilings and take several hours to heat the kitchen and dining rooms! If you don't believe me that these towns are the same, then visit them, but make sure you have a place to sleep. Just don't stay overnight, and then you won't have to worry about finding a place to sleep.
In 1970 to early 1980s, the town was filled with older people and they used the older way of saying the town name. I went there for a few days in 2019 and only found one person who grew up there. Everyone else i found only lived there a decade or two. No one even knew about the miniature Royal Gorge bridge that was in town. I figure it was torn down.
Good rule of thumb, don't argue with the locals on how to pronounce their town's name.
We spent 2k visiting there 20 years ago but we're thanked by a ticketing police officer for 2 over in a 25mph zone. Never going back
Thats Colorado for you, lived there for six months, cant stand their government.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great store and products!!!!
Agreed! Do you live here or have you just visited?
It's all the FUCKING AGENTS!!!! Literally, seriously, and absolutely. Agents are f-ing everyone from sellers, to buyers, to people wanting to sell and upgrade. MLS does not take into account the interest rates when posting sale data, and selling agents don't want to acknowledge how that has now flipped the market and are all too happy to take advantage of ignorant buyers who still double-down on these ridiculous bankruptcy/foreclosure ending prices. Agents are going to FUCK us all. If they would lower prices just 10%, then everyone on both sides would be able to compensate and move on happily. BUT, noooooo.... they want that extra commission and are happy to wait around for a true sucker to pay in. This is all BS. Fuck agents.

ChatGPT recommended I move here. I put in all of my wants in a town. This included an art scene and a town of 3-5 k people.
Wow, I haven't heard that one before. Based on the wants you shared, sounds like AI got it right. Where do you live now?
@@LivingInSalidaCO Right now I live in Southern Wisconsin. I've always loved Colorado. It's such a beautiful state. I drove though it once back in the 90s and always felt like going back.
@@fcseven Colorado is beautiful and the Salida area is especially beautiful (IMO). It sounds like you're due for another visit. Let me know if you make it down this way. I'm happy to be a resource for you :)
Lower interest rates helped create the high home prices we have now . I watched the 425khomes go up to 600k pretty quickly. Alot of out of towners came here from kansas , texas and oklahoma and didnt hesitate to paythe $600k and pushed alot of us locals out of the market .
It ain't the only one! Suh Lie Duh. Bew (as in Pew) Na Vis-Ta. Del NORT (as in Fort). Even the Rio Grande is not pronounced "Rio Gran-day" Seems like this rebellious attitude is all around Colorado ("Colorada")
You are very correct. Salida is not the only CO town/ area with an "incorrect" pronunciation of a Spanish word. Do you live in this area?
Good info thx
I'm so glad you think so. Thanks for sharing. Do you live in the Salida, CO area or just learning about the area?

There is Salida Kansas off I-70 how is it pronounced or should be pronounced
I'm not sure how they pronounce it there.Have you visited Salida, CO before?
Actually, having been there, I think it's Salina (with an "N," not a "D"). Last time I visited (some years ago) locals referred to it pretty much like Coloradans do Salida, Colorado: It's "Sa-line-ah," Kansas. Interesting, because the town's heritage is Swedish, not Spanish, though they do give a nod to the conquistadors by naming a bluff outside of town "Coronado Heights."
Does Leadville have much to offer? I have been thinking of visiting there
Leadville is a cute historic town as well. It's very high up (over 10k feet) so is colder than the Chaffee County (Salida & BV ) area. It's smaller than Salida and doesn't have as much of an art scene, but a great outdoor scene. Very close to Cooper Mt. It's worth a visit if you're drawn to this area. Have you visited Salida before?
@ I have not visited Salina. I visited a friend in Durango and thought this may be a place I check out again for retirement
@@ronmexico5908 Salida is a lovely spot to retire I've heard. We have a very active retiree community here. Salida is about 4 hours north of Durango, so closer to Denver area. If you're ever interested in exploring this area further, please reach out. I'm happy to be a resource for you :) Take care and thanks for watching!
Leadville has nothing!! Do you want to live at an elevation of 10,200 feet? Housing is ridiculous!
Leadville does have the mining museum, a Subway, and a Safeway. Also, ridiculously priced homes!! Oh, and deep snow!
I live in Buena Vista, we have fantastic Mountain View’s.
You certainly do. The views in BV are amazing! How long have you lived there?
@ 54 years in Colorado, 6 years in BV. Retired here
do you have a room for rent? 😁 fell in love with BV but not seeing any rentals 😢
@ so hard to fine a rental, granddaughter just found a how to rent. There are apartments being built off County Road 313.

Well done Monica. I am sure all your post will help many who are looking to relocate. I moved to Leadville in 1995 then to BV a little over a year later. I now live in Nathrop and love it here. Best of both worlds! I Love the whole valley. I have seen a lot of change in my many years here. Best to you!
Thanks so much for the kind words. This is such a lovely area. And you're right, Nathrop is the best of both worlds. It's perfectly in between BV and Salida. Thanks for watching!
The only thing Nathrop has is that rockshop which closes at like 4:00pm.
Is the Safeway the only grocery store in town? That's the only thing i did not like about Salida; everything else is great..
We have a Natural Grocers and Walmart has groceries. When were you here last?

Well, it definitely is not the same now as it was when I purchased here 12 years ago. Too many new builds that do not fit the character of the community. Too many people. Too many people on social media saying hey I am moving to Salida in x months and I need a place to live and I need a job, and I need ... Suggestion, figure all that out before you move here. If you move here, move here for what it is.
Im moving to Fairhope, AL. Colorado is in decline

I first came to Colorado as a transfer in 2014. Ten years ago things were nice bunch of people walking Boulder was great. Now the streets downtown is empty and the street people demand money. Boulder two many people sleeping at bike paths and the LGBT stuff is in your face. And I have personally been cancelled. Also taxes are high for me and I get nothing and Denver does not car for a white straight man. I'm moving to Fairhope Alabama. My advice don't move to Colorado very poorly govered state.
@@22tango0071 Wow that sounds like insanity! Street people demanding money? Unbelievable...I guess the Governor thinks all is well..
Please don't come here expecting the natives to fund your move and ability to stay. It's VERY expensive here. Please don't come here and want us to make our small town like the big city you moved from. You can't have it both ways. We have had days where it was 30 below. Every winter is different. We are VERY windy....not just SOME. People move here and do not like the wind and end up leaving. We have built customs homes in colorado since 1997. Do your research extensively with our new building codes that have added extensive cost to the already expensive building cost. This is a tourist town. Salida loses its small town appeal in the summer. Tourist are not the same as natives so keep that in mind. We deal with a lot in the summer. And are very happy when when winter comes. If you hate internet interruptions don't come here. lol Do your research on Heart of the Rockies Hospital extensively. Most of us travel to the front range. Just being real.
Hi Monica, Commendable effort in taking the time to create this informative video. We run a community of Real Estate Agent Influencers who get together once a week to brainstorm video for Real Estate. Assuming this may be relevant, would you like me to send you an invite?
sure. thanks for reaching out
I bought a house in downtown Salida in 2017. I guess technically before it went crazy. I love Salida and it’s super laid back feel combined with the weather. Con: don’t ever expect a plumber to return your call. Ever since I’ve been here I haven’t been able to get a plumber once- do it yourself or you don’t get it🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for sharing. So glad you've had a good experience so far. It's true, it can be difficult for service providers to call you back in our town. I have recently been using Chris Martin for plumbing work and he's great AND answers the phone. Would you like me to send his info?
@@LivingInSalidaCOyes I’d love a new Salida plumber’s contact info. Thanks!
@@vidmikevid Sure, Chris Martin's number is 720-227-6639. He's busy but he does get back to you and also does great work :)
Crave BV is awesome !
Agreed! That's a great spot. Do you live in BV or just visit there?
@LivingInSalidaCO Live in Michigan camped at twin lakes last summer .
If one plans to move to Salida, very expensive to live here, limited resources for seniors(hopefully we can address this issue), it is a slower pace, respect for each other and their stuff is an expectation, Pedestrian have the right of way in cross walks, pack it in-pack it out(don’t litter). Shop local, Much thanks.
Thanks for your input. I like your mention of it being pedestrian and how people don't litter. I think that's true. Do you live here or have you just visited?
@@LivingInSalidaCOI Almost landed here in 89 but life had different plans. I finally planted roots in this wonderland 12 years ago. This place just seem to make people happy and welcome. I hope we can hold on to that.
@@ciscokidfab7595 Thanks for sharing! I hope we can hold on to that as well. I think enough people value our welcoming community that they work to maintain it. Hope to see you in town :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my video!
no to give away housing. Creepy
What a fun interview, thanks Monica!
I'm so glad you liked it! Thanks for saying so. Do you know Jack?

Some Coloradoans pronounce it saliva .
That's a new one 😜
hi, thank you for all these hike tips! I was wondering if it is still nice to go see fall colors or am I past the window of time?
You're very welcome. I'm glad you found them helpful. The aspen leaves right now (10/10) are pretty much done. This year it started a little earlier so everywhere high up has fallen. There are some lower spots that still have some leaves and fresh leaves on the ground, which also looks lovely. Lesser-known are the cottonwoods that are pretty right now too. These tend to live near our rivers and creeks at lower elevation. Where will you be visiting from?
Con: Lack of affordable housing.
You should do the story of the furry trout.
I don't know that one well, but Steve, the historian in this video mentioned it to me a while back. That was a marketing technique for the town a long time ago, right? What do you know about that story?

And then there’s your neighbor to the north Byoona Vista 😂
All cause some rich German lady couldn't say bwenna she called it booowna
Very true. That's a fun story as well. I actually have a video about the origin of that mispronunciation as well. Here it is if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/TB7zGBgqcoc/v-deo.htmlsi=pFYltzD_MBpvmCla
That's one theory...
I hear people pronounce Pueblo "Pee ehb lo", and Cañon City " Cannon City^.

🦋 thank you
You are very welcome. I hope you find a leaf excursion you like :)
Nice little town. I do, however; say it correctly with the Spanish pronunciation since it’s a Spanish word. The D should also be a fricative (soft) D, not a hard D.
I totally get pronouncing it this way. You are right, it's a Spanish word. As a half-Mexican and person who grew up around Spanish, I respect keeping the Spanish pronunciation. Salida locals a hundred years ago said it differently and it kinda stuck 🤷♀️ Where do you live?
Nice video. You mention a short hike along the Marshall Pass road but no specifics other than small parking area. Does this trail have a name or is there more specific information on the trailhead/ Thanks for posting these suggestions.
Glad you liked the video. The trail off Marshall Pass doesn't have a name that I'm aware of. The parking lot area fits about 4 cars and is located a couple miles up after you pass the section where you can see O'Haver Lake below. The lot is on the right hand side and the trail goes off to the left (when facing the lot). Hope that helps. Do you like around Salida or will you be visiting?
@@LivingInSalidaCO Thanks for the reply. We will be staying near Fairplay starting later this week. Marshall Pass was already on our list and I'll be looking for this trail when we get that direction.
@@phaedruscj3330 Sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy!
We live and hike around Salida. Some of our ideas on fall hikes(not seeking flowers at this point). 1) We like the railroad grade trail near Princeton Hot Springs. This trail is smooth - SO YOU DON'T NEED TO STARE AT THE TRAIL. It is nice to look out and see the tree colors and lake(s). Easy hike. 2) Columbine Trail south of Salida. I like this niche trail because it has late Aspen leaf changing. It has the redish oak bushes. A small creek. Eventually you get into nice slopes where the trees were burned a few years ago. This gives you "alpine" views without walking at 12,000 feet. The little red oak bushes aren't suitable for housing, these bushes survive by being a fire accelerant - burning off canopy trees. 3) Colorado Trail segment north of Clear Creak dirt road. This is a great trail for windy days. You never have wind here. Also is a great winter trail where you can escape winter on a sunny day and gaze at the 14ners on the other side of the valley.
These are great suggestions! Thanks for sharing! I haven’t done the trail by Mt. Princeton yet but have been meaning to, this is a good reminder. There are just many amazing options near Salida. How long have you been here?
