Akuji the Heartless: Review and History
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 місяці тому
Get your arm blades and shrunken heads ready…it’s time to talk about Akuji the Heartless. This 1999 game is one of the few 3D platformers exclusive to the PlayStation, and though it’s not all that mechanically inventive, it has a unique aesthetic identity and touches on mature themes that dramatically set it apart from its family friendly contemporaries of the era. So why does nobody remember A...
Diddy Kong Racing - Intro + Attract Mode

Diddy Kong Racing, developed by Rare for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 was the 3rd party response to the more widely known Mario Kart. It has many of Rare’s trademarks of the era; colorful, polished design, cute characters and a thoughtfully implemented multiplayer. If you remember this game, you should ask yourself…were you a Mario Kart 64 kid or a Diddy Kong Racing kid? You know what that says abou...

Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. is a 3D fighting video game released by Midway in 1998 on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. It’s as 90s as a game can possibly be: early 3D, ugly character models, experimental camera and movement, and a relentless edginess that is oddly charming now. It’s not a good game, but if you ever wanted to see the 90s perfectly encapsulated, here you go! #90s #gameintro #fightinggames
Bushido Blade II (PS1) - Introduction

Bushido Blade 2 (ブシドーブレード弐, Bushidō Burēdo Tsu) is a fighting game published by Square in 1998. The emphasis on tactical, slow-paced, 1v1 combat with instant death really sets it apart from other fighting games of the era. Also you can throw sand in people’s eyes, so 10/10. #bushidoblade #playstation #gameintro

Bushido Blade (ブシドーブレード, Bushidō Burēdo) is a 3D fighting game developed by Lightweight and published by Square and Sony for the PlayStation in 1997. What sets this fighting game apart is the slow, methodical, 1v1 combat where careful timing and cautious play is the key to victory. It’s a bit rough to revisit when compared to its sequel, but it’s a unique experience that’s worth checking out. #...

Black: Review and History (PS2 + Xbox)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.10 місяців тому
The FPS Black was an impressive visual and technical showcase for the aging PlayStation 2 and Xbox. It's also an important step in the evolution of the modern military first-person shooter, and stands out as a unique hybrid of old school design paired with forward-looking technology. But what’s it like to play now that its technical achievements are a distant memory? How have the art direction,...
Castlevania Judgement: Review and History
Переглядів 166Рік тому
Join us in the warm glow of this flickering candle for a discussion of Castlevania Judgement, the very strange Nintendo Wii fighter from 2008. While the idea behind a Castlvania fighting game has potential, the execution here is lacking in many fascinating ways. The results are a bizarre mix of Soul Calibur, Power Stone, and Super Smash Bros. with a veneer of bizarre character redesigns and ecc...
The Bouncer: Review and History
Переглядів 559Рік тому
It’s time to talk about The Bouncer. Square’s first international release on the PlayStation 2 in 2001 is a shining example of the artistic excesses of the era, prioritization of style over substance, and an insane story that defies explanation. In other words…it’s a wild ride. This video will provide a brief history of the development of The Bouncer, a detailed review, and insights on what it’...
Resident Evil Gaiden: Review and History

Resident Evil has a million spin-offs…and 2002’s Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color is one of the weirdest. It’s a marvel of engineering, with a creative combat system that plays to the strengths of the portable console, one of the worst soundtracks in gaming history and an absolutely off-the-wall story. Is it good? Well...that’s complicated. This video will provide a brief history of ...

I don’t not appreciate the Gex slander and saying they’re not great games, I love all three Gex games. They have unique mechanics, cool level design, good visuals, great music, funny writing/dialogue (subjective) and are just fun games. I wonder if you’ve actually played the games yourself or if you’ve just parroting other people’s opinions?…. If you haven’t, give them a try, they are actually good, fun platformers with unique level design and visuals.

Glad you enjoyed them! They are fine for the time, just don't think they've aged particularly well, even after playing most of all three of them recently. As you said though, very subjective, and no question 2 and 3 are technically impressive!

@@ForgottenCodeGaming What I like about the Gex trilogy (mainly the 3D entries) is that Gex being a gecko, he has a wide variety of different moves and abilities he can perform throughout the game. Like; the tail bounce, his tongue, being able to absorb different elemental abilities, being able to climb on certain surfaces, etc. The level design makes great use out of these different abilities, and lead to fun and innovative platforming mechanics. I also love how all of the different worlds are themed off of different genres of TV, and how well those are realized in the game. No other platformer or game in general has similar levels or theming from different TV genres. Also thematically it makes sense for Gex to be a wisecracking, pop-culture spouting, womanizer. In the first game it’s explained that in Gex 1 after his father died, he inherent some of his father’s inheritance, and he spends that money on a giant TV. Gex basically did nothing FOR YEARS but just lounging around watching TV, channel surfing. So of course Gex would constantly spout pop-culture references and obscure jokes/references. It makes sense thematically and fits with his character, are they irrelevant/outdated? Yes, but that’s the risk of having any kind of contemporary references. That’s what I like about it, Gex is a product of the 90’s and has that charm of that era. You don’t have to like any of the pop-culture references, or think Gex hasn’t aged well in terms of our modern tastes and cultural sensitivity and all that. But it was a different era back then, and this series was a product in the decade in which it was created in. I personally find all of that stuff charming and funny. I think the games themselves are genuinely fun, creative, solid 3D collect-a-thon platformers with fun gameplay, innovative mechanics and amazing level design and theming.

There was no console wars when I was a kid. The Nintendo 64 was for the rich and privileged, the Playstation was for everyone else. Thanks for including some of the soundtrack. Dark and gritty was pretty common in US comics too before 2001. I don't remember if I finished the game, but I liked it for what it was, I particularly remember the early level design. Though I spent a lot more time playing, or rather getting lost and being confused in Soul Reaver.

A pretty crappy review to a great game. During the time this came out it was way ahead of its competition. As a FPS it focused on the most important thing.. shooting. A lot. You poured bullets into each level. It also allowed you to use various tactical manuvers to clear each area. Choosing which weapon was best for each situation was key and a big change from just using the upgrade weapon for the next level. Black was definitely the leader of the pack in its time and genre.
