@@ZebraFinches1 we live in a bush area so are surrounded by wild animals and plenty of rats and mice. I don't rely on only keeping rodents out by only doing deep footings but it definitely helps. These footings also keeps snakes and lizards out as well. Been doing this for decades

@@birdmandad6426 Supposedly there were a few pair here in the states back in the 60's. Never was able to confirm that but I have princess, Mulga, Red Rumps, and most Rosellas. Kudo's to you for sharing with us! How are the Swifts getting along?

@@mewrongway swifts are currently migrating/ed to mainland ...have some great pics from this week on the #100parrots Facebook page taken by a bloke in NSW. For all my asking ... I have never been able to confirm naretha bluebonnet made it Stateside. Definitely the Greater Bluebonnet parrot did... both Northiella haematogaster haematogaster ( yellow vent) and Northiella haematogaster haematorrhous ( red vent) did. I have seen recent photos out of USA of Greater bluebonnets... some seem to be hybrid between 2 subspecies but my understanding is that original imports were very limited. Naretha definitely made it to Europe including UK. 🥺 many did not survive, or breed. But I have seen gr8 success in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium with them, not huge numbers... because there is not huge numbers anywhere with naretha ( Greater Bluebonnet are an entirely different story!) The estimate is 2600 in homelands... no idea where that estimate is based off 🤔. No huge flocks have my 👀 seen.

Sadly Swift is heading one way in their homelands thanks mostly to Tasmanian logging. A few other issues contribute to their decline... bird strike on Tasmanian glass kills 10% of the wild population annually. The only positive is that there are some very apt aviculturists breeding swift parrots in captivity in Australia and internationally.

@@birdmandad6426 Wow that is really awesome information because Mom thought that Dad had a pair of some kind of Bluebonnet back in mid 60's. Cancer got him in 1969 when I was 8 so I cant say for sure. He has a book on budgies printed in 1960 are inside the cover he wrote Budgies, cockatiel's, bluebonnets and Red Rumps so we believe those are a list of what he kept. Anyway your videos are awesome! What type of blue is the female? Pure white front blue? Or does it have par blue or something else in its genetics? Same for male? I have purchased many supposed "pure normal " scarlet chested parrots from people only to find babies in the nest box 2 or 3 years later that have colours that shouldn't have been produced from pure birds

Yes there are 4 types of bluebonnet and 2 of them are Stateside! The nominate form Northiella haematogaster haematogaster the yellow vented bluebonnet.. and the Northiella haematogaster haematorrhous...the red vented bluebonnet. Some we are told are hybrids of the 2.

Yes people over there tell us the original importation was limited in size and quite possibly as people had birds die their only option to breed anything was to hybridise can only imagine what a pair cost $$

@@birdmandad6426 My Dad had 8 pair Northiella haematogaster - Eastern Bluebonnet imported back in late 50's. He past in 1969 when I was 10 so I dont know what happened to the birds. Now a single Naretha is 2,400 usd. Back in mid seventies Melinda S had several pairs Naretha.

This guy is a Western Rosella and they love to chat. This fella was an orphan so was hand reared from very young...so suspect he is telling us how much he loves us💕 he can talk human as well...so is a very vocal rosella

He is a real character that's for sure...more into chats and receiving his favourite bush tucker... he loves eucalyptus flowers and nuts! Sadly his relatives in the wild are almost extinct... casualties of habitat removal and insecticides 🥺

@birdmandad6426 I didn't know that anything ate eucalyptus flowers! That's wonderful. Definitely very sad that his wild brethren are so few. 😔 Is this little guy going to be part of a captive breeding program, at all, or is he too bonded to you?

Sadly being handraised he is far too in love with us to breed. He is 15 years old now...he had a wife but she died last year from old age. At 15 he would not breed and ceramic would not accept a new wife. He has been utilised as a call bird... to see if there are any surviving Western rosellas in an area though.

Yes it is a bit sad that so few know about Australian bluebonnets. There are 4 types and the naretha, though still limited in captivity, would have to be the easiest of the 4 to keep in captivity. None in any zoos or wildlife parks which is a concern considering the wild birds situation

@@birdmandad6426 Beautiful memories for me for sure. Hiking in wilderness mallee scrub and out of nowhere a beautiful male Scarlet was in a tree singing this beautiful song kind of like a very loud slow but clear finch. Fortunately I filmed it all with a 600 mm video camera. Did you know that when they are too hot they simply burrow down into the sand where its cooler with just their backs and heads above the dirt? I filmed that as well. I literally spent 4 hours with that bird filming and it was about 40C. Good thing I am heat tolerant LOL. I so love Aus and lead parrot tours now there. Last tour was in 2019. 9 clients from North America. Only 16 days but we were fortunate and saw 28 species of parrots. The only Neophemas we encountered on that one was Turquoise Parrots. To date I have filmed all 6 Neophemas. Just a wonderful group for sure.

Yes I know they burrow down into sand to keep cool. It is so hot here nowdays...this past summer was over 50 degrees in many inland places. I am sure many mallee birds died from heat stroke. Upside is the rains have hit big time in any inland parts...so will be a breeding bonanza. So hope the narethas have a bonza breeding season...been drought for 4+ years

@birdmandad6426 True. But the more I learn about all the parrots there are around there, the more I wish that my brief visit to the area had focused more on them. So many wonderful ones! Possible excuse to save up and visit again.

Thanks for your comments. Yes the saltbushes (and bluebushes too) do very well. Saltbush is eaten by every animal out there... and there are plenty of feral animals eating them as well... so they are low/stunted but surviving. 🤞🤞 for some rain this season

No not commercial at all. Just an average Aussie family who loves birds and tries hard to give them the best life ever

Hi Christian , sorry if we haven’t got back to you , even though we don’t keep red cheeked cordons they are very similar to blue caps that we keep , I think you would be fine to add them to you other birds , they would normally keep to themselves, sorry for late reply

Sounds pretty fabulous actually. I was just looking at our aviaries the other day.. when we got 43mm in a day. If I ever built again I am thinking I would put in within a shed as such...stops all the issues with leaking roof joins and different roof levels. One thing with birds... and it always amazes me...they can put up with cold..but not draughts. We have kept gouldians here quite successfully...and being from up north and feathers to suit... they cope ok with cold...just need to be able to get up and draught free. Aviary position... facing north; near to services water, electricity and storm water drainage... away from big trees and vegetation, enough clearance to get a vehicle behind/around... I personally like them closer to general living space...but not too close that light gets on them full on..our closest one is about 5m from back patio but has tall shrubs in between to block light and vision. We have the rat walls... so solid colourbond from floor...so small things don't startle them.

A very long time ago an old Gouldian breeder told me that original/ real camphor helped keep air sac mite away…mites in general… so I have hung them in any Gouldian aviaries since… mind you real camphor gets harder to find every year.

Alright, the podcaster narrator isn't birdman. Really enjoying Ive had finches since I was a kid in Canada (cutthroats) been here for 22yrs in WA. Up in Toodyay ish region now. Almost always had finches and the joy they bring me.

Yes for sure..entirely spoilt and live the life of Riley...certainly live a better life than any humans in our house!

These birds are fed sprouted seeds and vege chop every morning. Also every week or so boiled egg is added...shell and all.

Chick weed is seen as a weed here in Australia ...not sure if you can buy them as a seed sorry...it's scientific name is Stellaria media...maybe you can ask some seed merchants in Hong Kong

Every morning all our birds get a breakfast of sprouted seeds... there is a you tube on this chanel showing this...into the sprouted seed goes seasonal vegetables..bok choy or Asian greens are always in there... for afternoon tea they get green seeding grasses. They always have seed available. We give them a blended finch mix of millets, pannicums and canary seeds... also they always have grit available..currently using Fit Grit from naturally birds.

We have them in individual breeding pairs but mostly because we do not want to line breed that is parents breeding with offspring plus to know colors
