A good place to put in is the sandy beach at Whitefish Dunes State Park. It has a nice sandy beach in a natural bay. If the sea is calm, you can paddle nicely to the caves to your left (north) from there. Be careful though, once you get past the point you are in open Lake Michigan water without the shelter of the bay and the seas can be monster 10+ feet high and the water is always cold out in the Lake. Unlike ocean swells with long dwells in between waves, these waves come right after the other BAM BAM BAM so if you don't have the skills or the right equipment or the strength and stamina, you can be in real trouble in a matter of seconds. The sandy beach at Whitefish Dunes is a nice place to paddle if it is windy and wavy. The waves can still get pretty big there but you can abort and soft land in the shallow sandy shores.

The Door County caves are pretty to kayak when the weather is nice, but one of the most dangerous places on earth to kayak when the weather is bad... and it is most often crashing, pounding freezing cold waves. If you get caught in that situation, there is almost no escape as the shoreline is all limestone cliffs for miles or the unforgiving rapid waves of Lake Michigan that can easily pull you out many miles into the open waters with even bigger waves. The good news is that if you travel to the Door County caves north of Whitefish Dunes Park and the waves are too much that day, there is a trail along the shoreline cliffs/caves that you can walk along and feel the mighty power of Lake Michigan's waves.

My husband and I went on this tour with Hunter our tour guide and we had an amazing time! He is so laid back and friendly and informative but he knows when to let you have your time. I recommend the male in the back of the kayak. The trip back in was so much more relaxed and HUNTER told us to take our time on the way back He also talks about fishing. Ask for HUNTER!
