This, is Tim Stützle-one of the NHL’s best young forwards and the cornerstone of the Ottawa Senators franchise. But who exactly is this electrifying German star, and why has he become such a polarizing figure in the league? In this video, we dive deep into Stützle’s career so far, from his incredible junior performance in Germany to his rise as one of the NHL’s elite players.
Back in the 2020 NHL Draft, the Sens took a massive step in their rebuild by selecting Stützle 3rd overall. While Quinton Byfield and Alexis Lafrenière were also top names, Stützle immediately made his mark in the NHL with his incredible skill, hockey IQ, and vision. Since then, he’s developed into one of the most productive and exciting young stars in the league, putting up elite offensive numbers year after year.
But with success has come criticism. Stützle has been labeled as a "diver" by rival fans and players alike. Is this reputation deserved, or has it been blown way out of proportion? We break down the controversial diving allegations, Brendan Gallagher’s viral comments, and how these narratives may have unfairly overshadowed his brilliance.
What We’ll Cover in This Video:
🏒 Play Style Breakdown: How Stützle uses elite skating, edge work, and hockey sense to dominate offensively and create opportunities.
📊 Stats and Milestones: From his breakout rookie season to his near-100-point year in 2022-23 and why his dip in production last year wasn’t what it seemed.
🇩🇪 Junior Career: Stützle’s rise to stardom in Germany’s DEL and his standout performance at the World Juniors.
⚖️ Diving Allegations: Examining the evidence behind the "diver" label and how it affects his reputation around the league.
🌟 Comparison to Other Young Stars: Where Stützle ranks among his peers like Jack Hughes, Trevor Zegras, and Lucas Raymond in terms of skill and production.
💪 Leadership and Physicality: How Stützle’s commitment to defense, physicality, and leadership is shaping the Senators' future.
Why Tim Stützle Deserves More Respect:
Despite being one of the most productive under-23 players in the NHL, Stützle still flies under the radar due to narratives and the Ottawa Senators’ struggles in recent years. With 281 career points and counting, Stützle has already cemented himself as one of the brightest young talents in the game.
We also explore his growth as a 200-foot player, his ability to dominate on the power play, and his underappreciated contributions to Ottawa’s rebuild. From threading highlight-reel passes to silencing critics with physical play, Stützle is proving he’s much more than just a flashy forward.

This NHL Draft Prospect Will Be The Next Superstar In Net... And Nobody Is Talking About Him.
And this was two weeks ago. Now he's got 22 pts in 22 games. It's been so much fun watching him play. He really is damn good.
One thing I have noticed since Stu has gotten this "reputation" is the refs are very hesitent to make any calls if Timmy is the one getting slashed/hooked/cross checked. In a year where I have seen some of the softest penaltys called, the refs turn back the clock 10 years if its Stu on the receiving end. To me thats the only "tangible" thing thats effected our team from the diving allegations.
Stutzle has transformed his game completely this year....turning into a complete player...He's in the point range of Jack Hughes and Makar currently
Not disrespected anymore!!!!
Kidza stud
For the crying Habs fans who scream diver. Stutzle is incredibly fast on his feet. He just moves at a pace that make any teams defenders piss their jocks. You either have to take the body or take out the skates which seems to be what the Habs like to do because they can’t keep up. But he’s built some serious muscle over the last couple of years and his game has matured. Those 2 factors really complement his speed like prime Crosby and now we’re seeing a superstar play his game. Yes, he was looking for calls a lot when he first got in the league but could you blame him when he’s going down the ice like an F1 car and some dirty hab takes out his feet?
Jimmy should be playing with Batherson...at the start of December, they were racking up points together. I know this because 1) I watch every Sens game. 2) I have them both in my pool. Anyhow, the kid has arrived. When he falls, which he does, I wonder if he is just completely on his edges at times. Diver, no chance. He is just good and Dmen get desperate. GSG
Stutzle is just a absolute beast this guy's going to be top 5 in the league by the time he's 26
I’ve watched Timmy closely since he entered the league. He is NOT a diver. He doesn’t go down easily in order to draw penalties. He does, however, play at the limit of his control. If he’s not hit then you get these dazzling plays. But if he’s is hit it doesn’t take much for him to go down. He is learning quickly and has dramatically improved his stability. In a couple of years no one will be talking about this. And Gallagher is a whiny idiot.
My favourite player. Nice video
This kid is still great for hockey. He’s aggressive, takes shots and knows to get the puck on the net. I love his impact on hockey in a market that will reward his playstyle. People might cry about dives, but those people only cry about dives when it’s not their team. I leafs fans especially cry lmao but their team dives just as much as any other.
Stutzle falls down a lot. His skating is elite, and he's always pushing, on the edge. And that mean he falls down a lot. Sometimes even when no one is around, and I wouldn't jump to label him as a diver. Also his zone entry have been pretty so-so, especially on the powerplay. Giroux and bathersom have been much more reliable, they always make the smart simple play, and sometimes Timmy tries to do too much and get caught. But yes, he is Tmmy Superstar. This guy is a cornerstone of the Senators franchise for years to come, and will only get better with time
I have always thought he is our best player since he first stepped on the ice. Thanks for this vid, he really should be more recognized.
He's not a diver at all. Gallagher should be ashamed for the bs he spewed (kids watching), Maybe he should think of that when he plays! The maple leaf fan clubs, TSN, Sportsnet and CBC at one time, love to crap on Ottawa. They initially called Karlsson a diver also. They sh!t all over Spezza when he was a point a game player with Ottawa. Far too many people drink that blue koolaid that gets served by biased media personnel.
The biggest improvement with Tim this year is his compete level. He’s got that mamba mentality. He’s back checking, he’s using his body, he’s hitting, he’s digging in corners, he never gives up.
The thing about Stu is that he used to fall all the time. Not diving from contact. He’d be skating by himself and just fall. Dude had Bambi legs. But now he’s maturing, physically. And he doesn’t fall as often. I’ve watched every game he’s ever played, and he is NOT a diver.
I think the reputation as a diver really stemmed from Timmy finding his legs, in the first couple of seasons he looked like he had Bambi legs out there at times and would easily fall when trying to be creative to make a play. I think he is a lot stronger now and has much better control of his gap and position with other players - I don't see this issue anymore this year. His edgework is elite now and he doesn't appear to fall very often. Timmy is a one man force out there this year, he is the best player on the team and one of the upper elite in the league. He has the ability to drive play on his own, and drag his linemates with him rather than being someone that is more one dimensional or complimentary. He also benefits a bit from matchups when the Brady line acts as the threat, he gets to play against weaker opponents.
It's a fabrication
Great video bro, the only recommendation I have is that you don't really need those transitions where the screen flashes and warps between clips. It would be way smoother without those transitions .
the reputation stuck because "good ol' Canadian boy" Brendan Gallagher put on a show about it, Habs fans amplify it, he draws a lot of penalties, and he's European. Unfortunately it's caught on outside of Montreal, and it'll be hard for him to shake
As a Sens fan... Every comment about him were right... Stutzle is a smart player, he knows exactly how to get calls and it was very obvious sometimes... Being young, he was on the smaller side and was getting knocked down fairly easily... He was also constantly complaining to refs when not getting his calls... I myself was getting a bit tired of it even if he was right when complaining. Not the best look to your teammates... With that being said, Stutzle is a completely different player this year. Leveled up every aspect of his game, and on most night is a step above every other player on the ice skill wise... There's also no more shenanigans. I would assume that it was something discussed in his year end meeting with the staff
1. You should learn how to pronounce "Stützle". 2. He is good, but not in any way a superstar.
I believe that’s the correct pronunciation haha, I’ve watched a lot of Sens games since he’s come into the league. Do you pronounce it like Stoot-zel?
superdiver more than superstar
Timmy is always moving his feet. That's why he gets the calls and why he falls really hard
He is incredibly good at moving his feet to draw calls. An underrated attribute of his.
I think that his a player that is easy to trip ,but that doesn’t mean he dives. His also a player that likes to keep the puck and skate so his gonna get tripped and hooked more often. Those people hating never actually saw him play.
Ya I agree. Has he sold a call before? Sure. But he shouldn’t be known as a diver around the league. Plenty of players have done exactly the same thing
apprecate the vid i love my sens and stutzle!
Thanks man I really appreciate it!
Talk about Cole Caufield and or Connor Garland next
Noted!
Those two cant even hold a candle to Tim
I don't recall one instant where he dove. I dare anyone show me just 1 clip. I do acknowledge that he needs to work on his core strength and balance, which does lack
Absolutely true for his first few seasons. It’s a league for men and very few teenagers have that core strength. I think due to hard work and natural physical maturity this does not seem to be an issue this year. He is now the know knocking others off the puck.
He’s definitely losing an edge a lot of the time. Not a dive, but it probably explains why a lot of people consider him to be one.
Ty for being objective and doing your homework.
John Scott and David Ayres is my 2 favorite feel good NHL moments.
The diving thing was fabricated by the Habs because Stutzle dismantled them every single game
The rivalry between Stützle and the Habs fans is so awesome
💯
Cope harder😭 so many clips of him diving
@@LochlanMattenley-xc7glcope harder, imagine clicking on a video about a ”diver” just to comment that he’s a diver lmaooo get a life
They got the best one
Probably ended up with 2 of the top 3 players in the 2020 draft
Timmy is totally different this year. Much more physical. He’s steamrolling through players who foul him rather than hitting the ice. He’s class.
He’s definitely growing physically as a player. As he gets even stronger on his feet the league will be in more and more trouble
I noticed when you said "standing up for himself" you showed the clip him hitting Hoglander dangerously from behind a few feet from the boards. The difference is he got up and stood up for himself attacking Stutzle in response instead of laying on the ice hoping the ref makes a call which Stutzle does.
The hit on Hoglander wasn’t a good hit by Stützle. But the point I was trying to make more so is that he was answering the bell and willing to fight. Don’t get me wrong, he was 100% in the wrong on that play, and Hoglander did the right thing by fighting back after the hit.
It wasn’t a good hit but stop being soft man. It’s hockey
hmm horseshit
I remember this shit happening with Crosby. This year Stu has shown he can use his body and push back instead of falling. If he keeps on this pace, the 'diver' title will go away with time.
It should in theory. We’ll have to wait and see if it does I guess!
All I can say is that habs fans are generally a very loud and hockey illiterate fan base
Stutzle has more hits than Trouba. Drilled Morgan Rielly twice in the same shift. Anyone calling him soft is a hater. His competitiveness is through the roof.
Exactly. One of the most underrated physical players out there.
His two way game is grown this year
Absolutely. He’s very underrated defensively by most fans that don’t watch the Sens too often
He’s so damn good this year. so good defensively
His 2-way game definitely deserves more credit around the league. He’s a legit point per game player who can also keep the puck out of his own net. At 22 years old..
I believe last years dip in points is because he was focusing on being better defensively. Jaques Martin was a big part of this. Green gets to reap the rewards.
Definitely played a part. I think that along with his wrist made his numbers take a dip.
actually he was injured all year especially his right wrist
It also doesnt help that he was playing injured.
This is a great video! Thanks for posting it
Thanks man I really appreciate it!
Timmy Superstar, sick hands, elite shot.
Nuff said
@@Marc89000 he reminds me of another #18 that played for Ottawa. And not just because they wore the same number.
The whole 'diving' thing is blown way out of proportion by people jealous they don't have a Tim Stutzle on their team.
I mean to be fair, as an Ottawa lad, who loves the team; I do see stutzle very much as a princess and a flopper. Dude looks like he weighs 90lbs anytime anyone makes contact.
@@SeivelNyou haven’t watched much yhis year. He’s been a menace when it comes to hitting Edit: in comparison to past years
I agree. He has definitely sold calls before in his career no doubt. But to say he’s the biggest diver in the league is an over exaggeration.
@@SSHockeyTim Stutzle is definitely a skilled player, and this year he has increased his hitting and toughness so you have to give him credit. But if you go off of the last few years alone , he is definitely the biggest diver in the NHL.
nah, he was divey as hell
I'm not saying Steuztle is Crosby, but Crosby was known as a diver in his first season or two, then he changed his mentality. Timmy has changed his mentality this year and is having his best year so far.
Definitely very different players play style wise. But I definitely agree that he’s changing his on ice approach, and he’s definitely being overly disrespected now
@@SSHockey he changed after his first season but idiots like Gallahger had to be embarrased before people started paying attention. He is abused frequently and the penalties don't get called. the bull shit is pure bull shit
Best soccer player I've ever seen in skates
Keep hating. Crosby was known as a diver early in his career, then he just stopped looking for calls. Timmy has done something similar.
jealous or what
Great video, couldn’t agree more!
Thanks I appreciate it!
yesterday I saw him practicing with the team Canada roster and I might be able to skate with him and team Canada on Wednesday
Mack is tearing it up already. Amazing talent, we are so lucky to have him in SJ.
I'm also not getting my hopes up and a lot can happen in 3 years (Or not happen) but at 5:00 you are actually describing something similar to a 15 year old Bobby Orr.
I would say that Bedard skill and puck handling in the ability to maneuver on the ice is very dynamic separates Celebrini is his Hockey IQ and his 200 foot play, that’s gonna take him into a long career, and you can build around a guy like that. You can bring guys in like Bedard that have skills and pocket ability but you can’t bring a celebrity in to a Bedard team Cabrini brings more of a full complete package.
