The challenge Ugandan boxers face today lies with the referees and judges. It’s evident that many of them lack the necessary credentials to elevate the sport and make it shine. From my observations, some referees seem more focused on showcasing themselves as the "masters of the game" rather than allowing the boxers to perform. They often interrupt the fighters unnecessarily, preventing them from executing their strategies. In a semi-professional league, which carries more of a professional boxing feel than an amateur one, referees should allow the boxers more freedom. For instance, minor hand punches that barely connect with the opponent shouldn’t warrant intervention. Instead, referees should focus on more significant actions, such as punches to the back of the head, low blows, or excessive clinching. Letting the fighters flow naturally within the rules is key to fostering a more competitive and engaging match. This is truly disappointing, and I believe it’s high time the Uganda Boxing Federation organizes refresher courses for Referees and opens up opportunities for new referees to join the roster. Expanding the pool of referees would create healthy competition among them, ultimately improving the quality of officiating. The same applies to judges, as their competence is just as critical. If the judges aren’t performing up to standard, it negatively impacts the game, and the same goes for referees, whose actions can make matches feel awkward or poorly managed. In recent years, the criticism was often directed at boxers for not delivering their best performances. However, now that the boxers have elevated their game to a highly competitive level, it’s disappointing to see judges and referees failing to match that progress, ultimately dragging the sport down. This fight was supposed to go to Alex Kanaabi, but shockingly, it was awarded to his opponent. I want to encourage Alex to stay motivated because the performance he delivered was truly impressive. Keep working hard, and your time will come. Success won’t be measured by how many losses you’ve had but by the level of performance you consistently show. Alex, you demonstrated great sportsmanship, excellent footwork, and the ability to move out of danger at the right moments. You can attack effectively, execute with speed, and your body movement is commendable. Your ability to utilize the ring to its full advantage is a skill that earns you credit at a professional level. For heaven's sake, how could Matovu make such a grave mistake by turning his back on his opponent without the referee stopping the fight? This is something my younger brother should never do when facing a serious opponent. It’s likely that this opponent is his friend, as their mutual respect during the fight is evident. Perhaps that’s why Matovu was so hesitant, assuming that his friend wouldn’t hurt him. Similarly, the opponent seemed to hold Matovu in high regard, which might explain why the intensity of the fight wasn’t as high as it could have been. However, in boxing, there’s no room for such assumptions, and Matovu needs to stay sharp regardless of who he’s facing.

However, this experience forces him to go back to the drawing board, analyze his mistakes, and work on the issues that led to him dropping his guard and leaving himself vulnerable to that decisive punch. If I were Nerrick coach, I would advise him to focus on using his jab more effectively in the later rounds. Additionally, I would emphasize the need to adapt his Tyson-style or Peek-a-Boo boxing approach by being more protective. He was leaving a significant gap between his hands and his jaw, which Owen exploited to land a critical punch on the jaw. That punch left him vulnerable, allowing Owen to finish with a decisive blow to the head that knocked him down. If you observe closely, his footwork was off the proper fighting stance during the knockdown. Despite this setback, I see great potential in Nerrick. He should continue refining the Tyson-style approach but work on closing the gaps in his defense, especially around his jaw, to prevent opponents from exploiting this weakness in future fights. I can understand the frustration that comes with being knocked out, but it’s important to learn and grow from such experiences. Nerrick showed incredible aggression throughout the fight, constantly cutting off Owen’s movement in the ring. Although Owen’s experience allowed him to stay calm and avoid significant damage by weaving and bobbing through Nerrick's hooks, jabs, and crosses, the absence of uppercuts in Nerrick's arsenal gave Owen an edge. Owen capitalized on this and managed to maintain control, earning him an advantage on the scorecards. If the fight had gone the distance, I would have scored it as a majority draw. Both fighters displayed skill, but Nerrick’s aggression and Owen’s composure balanced the scales. With some adjustments, I believe Nerrick will come back stronger and more prepared to dominate future bouts.
