    Outdoor layout here. I lose Bluetooth signal as the train passes around the far side of a dirt pile. Android "auto reconnect" works like I expect. I set auto-reconnect on an Apple phone, but it doesn't do it. I have to go back to "home" and hit connect to control my train again.

      @@gigasaurus My conclusion at this point is that the old iPhone I was using (iPhone SE from about iPhone 4 days) doesn't have Bluetooth LE - which includes protocols for intermittent communication between the phone and the device. If you are using an older BlueRail blue horse board from 2016, try playing with the motor tunings in the settings screens. That allows you to manipulate the shape of the wave signal sent to the motors which can be picky on some o’gauge locos.

    Hi Dave, is it possible for the app to connect to another hand held controller such as a thumb joystick or mini controller? My thinking is to use the app to make settings on the run (example momentum) but have simple accelerate and decelerate via a user choice of controller. Similar to what the enginedriver app can do by connecting to an external input/output device.

      On the new app, the app automatically manages the function button names based on your CV settings (except for custom names that you have locked). So all of that is seen on other Android devices you may have automatically. If you have entered a custom button name (for example you have renamed FX6 to "Ditch Lights") you will have to enter that custom name on your other devices (at this time).

    I absolutely love this idea! My club's track gets so damn dirty, I get frustrated and give up. The one thing I would love to see is a version that has notches on the software. Rather than a slider with 1 thru 100, how about make it more realistic with a mock-up AAR control stand and notches, but in an app version? Kind of like the ProtoThrottle but on the app. Can't wait for N scale and Android versions!! I will definitely be getting this!!!

      If you tap above or below the throttle ball, it takes you up or down one notch.

    • @JacksonSubNScaleModelRailroad
      @JacksonSubNScaleModelRailroad Рік тому

      @@BlueRailTrains True, but my guess is that the notch you are refferring to is a 1% change. Tap once, up 1%, tap a second time, you are at 2% etc... I meant notch Idle thru 8. Notch one energizes the traction motors at idle, notch 1 increases the rpms by 65, notch 2 etc... up to notch 8, full power. Not a 1 thru 99% deal like JMRI or the potentiometers on a NCE or Digitrax throttle. My idea would be to take a photo of an AAR stand inside of a locomotive, use that as the software background, and superimpose the working controls on that. As you press and hold the throttle and slide it forward and backwards, the image changes and moves the throttle stick thru the notch positions. Maybe an idea here for someone who is good at making apps. Take the workings of your app, or Engine Driver / WiThrottle, but make it look like you are in a locomotive. Thant what I meant.

    The range for bluetooth are different from outside and inside buildings. Can you provide more about the specs in terms of version that you are using? The BlueRailTrains site says the app works on IOS9 which is 2015. Also since bluetooth is bi-directional communications, would it be possible to add feedback from the locomotive such as locomotive motor diagnostics (temperature, speed etc) This might require some cooperation with the manufacturers. This would really be a nice plus.

  • @billdrake1711

    Hi Dave. Slightly misleading channel discussion. Bluetooth and BLE are frequency hopping technologies. Each device uses all available hop channels in a pseudo random sequence agreed to by the two devices when a connection is formed. If two devices land on a channel at the same time and a data collision occurs, they detect it. Each moves on to its next channel and retransmits the message segment. As the connections will now be on different channels the message will get through. I worked with Washington University in St. Louis testing Bluetooth in various wireless environments and found no loss of connections in the presence of WiFi, Zigbee or other sources of interference. It's important with Bluetooth to distinguish between channels and connections. Bluetooth uses 79 hop frequency channels but can have a huge number of connections sharing those channels. BLE does the same thing using 40 channels. I participated in the development of BLE and it is designed to support thousands of connections in an Internet of Things applications for home automation or industrial automation. In testing in ugly industrial environments Bluetooth got through when WiFi couldn't. Great product idea btw. Bill Drake

      His explaination seemed to go off the rails to me. Your explanation does a much better job. Based on probabilities quick guesstimate with 40 people hitting the horn at the same time, 4 to 8 may have an initial conflict but it would likely be sorted out within 0.25 seconds or less (most wouldn't even notice). With 60 people there would be more initial conflicts but all should be sorted within 0.5 seconds.

    Note that the loco never moves. A better demo would start moving the loco and then stop it. This would require multiple number of commands sent to the loco almost continuously. This would be a much better test of signal. This is not a good demo of signal range because it does not reflect realistic situations. Specifically, there is nothing between the train and the ipad. On a layout a train will go into a tunnel, perhaps made of casting powder. The tunnel will weaken the signal. Also their are obsticals such as other trains and buildings so there is not a direct signal.. Finally according to searching the internet bluetooth is limited to about 30 ft.

    • @BlueRailTrains
      @BlueRailTrains 2 роки тому

      I use it all the time indoors and out, and from multiple rooms away. It has great signal strength and latency is not an issue. When it travels through a long underground tunnel (which I test it on) the loco reconnects when it nears the exit of the tunnel (so you never notice). Your research about “30 feet” is for classic Bluetooth, not Bluetooth low energy (which this is)

    Dave, you need to add a demo mode to the ap so folks considering buying into Blunami can actually open the ap and see how it works. Right now it won’t do anything on my iPad unless there is a Bluetooth loco available. Also is the Bluetooth transceiver always on is is there a CV or function in the decoder to turn it on. I have looked in all the Soundtraxx stuff and this is not mentioned anywhere! Matter of fact Soundtraxx has nothing about the Bluetooth operations or requirements. Thanks-Larry Puckett, The DCC Guy

    • @BlueRailTrains
      @BlueRailTrains 2 роки тому

      Yea, we had a "demo mode" when the app was in its infancy, but it became more work to maintain as the app complexity increased, so we ultimately decided to park that feature and just focus on developing the app. Hopefully there will be enough Blunamis in the wild soon so you can check it out yourself. As for the bluetooth question, I believe the decoder will operate in standard DCC through-the-rails mode until you launch the app in range. Once you have connected to the loco via bluetooth, the decoder will disregard through-the-rail signals and respond to app commands. To return to standard DCC mode you need to power-cycle the board. Good to hear from you.

    • @BlueRailTrains

      You'll want to identify where in the module the antenna is and (hopefully SoundTraxx will post an image of that sometime) and put a dot on the outer shrink-wrap on that spot, and then do your best to position the module so the antenna is as far from any metal edge as you can. Having the module inside a diecast tender will take away some of the signal (maybe 25% based on some tests I've done in the past) but as long as you position it properly, you should hopefully get a good enough signal. I have used this same brand of modules in a brass shark-nosed loco and have gotten a pretty strong signal.

      You are going to lose a little bit of range (with the brass tender shell) but since the BT module has such a powerful signal to start with, your final result won't be that bad. As discussed in the video, it will help if you set it up so the BT antenna is not immediately adjacent to the brass walls of the tender.

    Congratulations on a great technology partnership. I've been following your progress for years. The one thing holding me back has been the need for an iPhone hardware adapter to provide a tactile mechanical throttle (wheel or buttons). You teased the idea with your video using a iPhone bluetooth game controller to control BlueRail. I in-vision a handle with clips at the top to physically hold the phone. The handle would have either a thumb wheel or buttons for throttle control and direction. (very minimal - 2 buttons and a wheel) This device would simply be plugged into the lightning connector on the iPhone. Added bonus if the "handle" held an auxiliary charger to keep the iphone from draining during an op session. Just my thoughts. Congratulations again. Keep up the great work!

    I just saw the presentation from Soundtraxx and it looks like you are doing the software side. I do not own any Apple stuff, I do have a Galaxy 20. So my question is, how long before there is a Droid version of the app? Thank you.

      I don't have a date, but we are hopeful this will happen soon. Please read the article linked below. Also please consider you could probably get an iPhone6s plus on eBay for $50 (no phone plan required) and enjoy it while you wait for the Android version to come out. bluerailtrains.com/why-do-developers-release-ios-versions-before-android/

      @@fire5506 no. The recommended minimum device is a iPhone6 plus.

      Lello, I bought a second hand ipad V11 or later, for 65$ AUD....AND then bought a case to protect it outdoors. Taken me ages to get used to it. don't really like it, as opposed to Android, but have got used to it. It has nothing else on it except bluerail....cheers. rivergladesgardenrailway
