    First, let me thank you for the video. May I ask that you update your terminology though? There are many discussions on this topic, but I find the message has still not reached some. First, there is no such thing as an "exposure triangle" in digital photography. The only thing that determines exposure is the aperture and shutter speed. ISO is simply post-exposure amplification or gain (i.e. brightness). If you want to call it the photography triangle (as the term was first coined in the 2000s), explaining that ISO (in nearly all cases) just increases or decreases amplification of signal and noise, then go ahead. Major photography channels and the Explorer's of Light or Ambassadors never use the term "exposure triangle". Speaking on Aperture, Karl Taylor explains the concept correctly @ 1:20 into the video. ua-cam.com/video/jkEuoTcXNeA/v-deo.html Lastly, I'm not a physics major, but I believe you start suffering the effects of diffraction essentially every time you close the lens down at all. It's just that you do not see its effects,, until you reach a certain point (camera sensor, lens and subject dependent). In this demo, I don't believe I heard you mention your focal length - which of course also would change the effective depth of field. Again, thank you for your efforts. As to the question you pose in the video. I'm just a beginner photographer. If we exclude from the discussion choosing aperture for exposure reasons (i.e. we need more or less light - and shutter speed will not get us there), then, in general, if you want to isolate and highlight a part of the image, because that's what is important, then shallow DOF helps you achieve that. However, if many of the elements in the image are the story (i.e. expertly done by Alex Webb), then a greater DOF might help you visually achieve this. Simply put, in my mind, DOF can help change the emotion associated with an image (i.e. isolation or inclusion). This is the art of photography, and the choice of the artist. What say you?

      Thank you for watching and I appreciate your reply but I believe you've missed the point of this video completely and tried to be too clever in your reply, this video is designed to be a basic introduction to what aperture is and how it works in its most simplistic and basic to understand form without getting into the science behind it. Thanks for watching I truely appreciate it.

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam 3 місяці тому

      @@WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc Again, thank you for your video. Basic I get, but basically, there is no exposure triangle, and there is simply nothing clever about that. Here is another video done recently explaining this very concept less than 2 minutes in (and how to use aperture). ua-cam.com/video/Xamiyb0aCZE/v-deo.html

    • @WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc
      @WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc 3 місяці тому

      Lol they must be foxgloves then, thanks Steve I'd say the biggest limitation with the 50 is the simple fact of no zoom capability and because of how the woodland floor is you can't always get closer enough to the subject to create the composition you want so you could possibly lose some shots and I definitely did miss my zoom lens but I enjoyed the day and using the 50 such a great little lens, bless ya buddy have a good week.

  • @marinrealestatephotography
    @marinrealestatephotography 3 місяці тому

    Thanks for the video, Dan. I could argue that, in today's world, this is a lens for an EXPERT photographer. I say that because in today's world, it seems like everyone uses an ultra-shallow depth of field in lieu of actual composition and photographic "depth." I would love it if more photographers used a deeper depth of field and made ALL parts of the frame matter.

    Thanks Dan! Excellent video, both in explanation and the images taken. I really enjoyed the tree trunk with the wide open aperture. I typically shoot in manual, so I adjust aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. However, I think favoring aperture priority may be the ticket. I agree with you as well, the right aperture for the right image is largely dependent on the taste of the photographer. However, there is certainly opportunity for the wrong aperture when trying to present a scene. Thanks again, Dan

      @@WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc I had a great weekend, thanks. Good luck searching for that second lens. I used it last week to take pictures from a couple of bluetits flying in and out of their nest to feed their juveniles. At 300 mm the results were better than I expected, since there isn't any vibration reduction in the lens and I didn't bring my tripod. Just took the highest shutter speed to eliminate any blur from moving the camera and to freeze the birds in their flight. I've always used the 28-80 more often, but the 70-300 has its advantages in certain situations.
