Oh yeah, sports talk to start the show. I'll say one thing about the Vikings and their victory....It was very Zimmer-like. Dominate early and then hold on until the final whistle to win it by the skin of the teeth. I remember buying a few of those Marvel/Hanna Barbera comics as a kid. You see them occasionally in dollar boxes at comic book shows.... usually in rough shape. Knowing a lot of those comics never survived the '80s, I'm sure most of what did survive is in rough shape, hence the dollar box appearances. I feel like quality copies of those titles are rather rare. Amazing to see!

Honky was indeed a great celeb.... appreciates the fans and isn't bitter about doing signings for the people. And his stories and commentary were highly entertaining. He was worth the time if you love old school wrestling. So fun! I realize sports, comic and wrestling signers are your wheelhouse.... if you can get a second-tier celeb from the world of Kevin Smith or somebody from classic film and/or TV in the future, that'd be a lot of fun to see somewhere other than some overpriced weekend con. Emphasis on con. Glad to see the shop doing well... it's a great asset to the city and greater community.

Some of us of a certain age remember Tom Thumb's. Plenty of that '89 Batman swag looks familiar. And there was no shortage of merch back then for that film. The buzz for that flick.... plenty of Marvel acolytes might race to the theater every time a new Avengers-related flick hits the cineplex, and there's always interest in anything Batman related these days, but it's hard to match the hype and excitement that '89 Batman generated. What a different time. I thought Keaton was an odd choice...I thought they should have went with a lesser known actor, and dang, I was wrong. Keaton was outstanding, to the surprise of many. And I thought he was crazy to walk away after two films. But he was smarter than we realized. Batman 3 was OK, but Keaton was vindicated by the time Batman 4 tanked the franchise. I've still never seen the Dark Knight trilogy. I need to right that wrong.

I was not a GI Joe toys guy. My younger brother was big into it. So while I do not remember all the various aircraft and other vehicles they manufactured, I do remember the battleship. My brother had that, and that was an amazing piece of toy in its day.

That's hype

I don't think anyone wants their entertainment produced via AI. I watched a 2023 horror film recently, which was widely released in 2024 after dazzling the audience at some film festival in 2023. "Late Night with the Devil" is a pretty interesting way of telling a horror story. It's set in 1977, so the look and the feel of the show has to be dated. And they did a really good job of it. It's about a late night talk show, and at some point the film's creators used AI to create a few artwork pieces that are used in the film. Specifically the images are "we'll be right back" cards that were commonly seen on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show as part of the commercial break. The creators defended using them in the low-budget film and noted that the art team for the show was involved in creating them for use in the finished film. We're not talking about scripted dialogue, we're talking about still images used in the film. Sure, the film wasn't paying an artist to create '70s-era art, but is this such a crime? The film was not written or created using AI, as far as we know, it was three pieces of art. This hardly seems like a crime. Yet people are outraged, and online reviews I've read, which otherwise praised the film, want to damn it for using AI to create a prop for the film. Seems a bit over the top. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 2 contains a fight scene that relies so heavily on computer animation/graphic manipulation it looks more like a lifelike cartoon than a live action adaptation of the classic comic book. To me that's more offensive than using AI for a few props in a film. As for comics, it won't be long before we see a publisher, probably a small press/indy publisher, create an entire comic book based upon AI. From the hero, to the art and story, somebody will try to create something solely using AI. Will it sell gangbusters? Unlikely. But being the first is notable, and somebody is going to use it as the premise of a book. And given we've seen 430,000 stories about a guy bitten by a radioactive spider, wouldn't it be interesting to see what technology might come up with? I think that would be interesting. And if it's any bit good, wouldn't it be fun to see the company take a concept generated wholly by AI and then putting real life artists and writers to work creating stories expanding on the concept? I think that'd be as interesting as reading about how the Flash saved the world, again. I don't think it's necessarily a crime to use AI to create an alternate cover to a book. Given publishers are willing to create 7 alternate covers to their precious books, why not throw in an alternate using AI. It would be interesting to see, and nobody is forcing me to buy/collect any of the alternate covers. Nobody wants to see their Batman or Speedball stories written and illustrated using AI, but I think it can be used to enhance the product being produced without offending me.

I wouldn't normally post anything of any length or substance on here, but I felt compelled based on the notion suggested in this episode. I find it both absurd and reprehensible that someone would suggest that the dollar bins be anything other than random comic book chaos (no offense to anyone with a legitimate OCD diagnosis). It truly is the thrill of the hunt. The musty smell of a long box of raw comics is one of the greatest things on this earth. A large part of my collection is made up of books pulled out of the "dollar bin", but I'm old enough and have been collecting long enough that a good portion of them are from the "quarter bin" (if people remember all the Shinders locations in the TC/Metro). I and my comic book tribe have traveled hours away from our HQ just to dig through bulk comic boxes. It is a family thing, and it has not only brought me closer to my tribe members, but it has generated core memories of spending quality time on the hunt and finding really good books (not just of monetary/collector value, but also to read). I try to read at least one comic a day, and the dollar bins let me purchase titles I would not otherwise seek out. In conclusion, thank you Kevin, Kent, Tommy and Mafoo (and anyone else behind the scenes) for all the awesome sales, garage cons, gatherings and hunts you have sponsored over the years. That is what makes Most Wanted Comics not just a place, but a destination. Viva La Maniacs!

Great interview with the New Pain crew. So how many titles have they produced? Are they on store shelves? It seems like starting a new line of comics without a corporate backer is extra tricky, even for people who have worked in the industry for a long time. I couldn't find a website for their company, either. Look forward to hearing more about their work.

I got some of the freebies this weekend. Looking forward to financing my son's college education with this year's grab. Interesting to hear that FCBD was used to introduce a villain in the Spideyverse. I didn't know that, of course I don't pay attention to what's happening with Spidey any more. With all the clones and variants of Spider-Man out there, it's as bad as DC was with its infinite Earths decades ago. I'm a bit stunned that there's a Spider-Man 2099 after all these years. And I still don't know what Spider-Gwen is, what world Spider-Girl exists in or if we still have a Spider-Woman. I'm sure it's better today, but I liked the simpler times of 30 years ago, when the biggest question was what happened to Parker's alien symbiote suit. Thanks for sharing the tidbits about FCBD. By the way, I saw no copies of Creature from the Black Lagoon in your shop. Looks like you had a hit on your hands after all. Here's a talker for when you guys are light on new product to discuss. What's your favorite character variant published? Besides the 75 variations of Spidey, be it 2099, Spider-Gwen, etc., we had DC publishing variants of its biggest heroes with Batman '66, Wonder Woman '77 and Superman '78. We've had reimagining of Scooby-Doo with the zombie apocalypse title. I believe Archie went darker before the Riverdale show ever hit the airwaves. Comics have been a great format to take familiar characters and try new variations. (Marvel's What If? and DC's Elseworlds were doing this decades ago.) So what were the home runs, according to the two of you? After the Batman suit with the nipples, I don't give much thought to whether a costume is good or bad. They're not team mascots. The costumes should be generic and not flashy anyway. Another talker for a slow week: What's the best mash up of universes? We've seen Marvel and DC collaborate a few times. Batman and Scooby-Doo, G.I. Joe and Transformers and countless others. Do you guys have a favorite?

So I've never watched one minute of MMPR, I couldn't have been more clueless about what's good or bad, or why. All I remember is that they were basically identified by their color. (I can't say I know much about TMNT, as well, but I did watch a couple of the movies in the 90s.) Nonetheless, listing to Tommy and Matthew pick apart the Power Rangers was amusing despite the fact that I didn't know what they were talking about. My sympathy to their mom. I could have walked away at any time. I agree, classic horror just doesn't fascinate today's youthful audience. Sure, the old B&W horror flicks are a bit cheesy, and aren't scary, but there's something about the simplicity that makes them enjoyable and creepy. Today's horror is so over the top that it loses some of its charm. Here's an analogy: The 1978 Superman movie is my gold standard for superhero movies. That Superman was amazing, yet it felt like he lived in my world. It wasn't so over the top. As decades moved on, the action became too fantastic, and the movies feel more like comics. When I saw Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 2, I remember watching the battle scene on the moving subway, but it no longer felt real. Thanks to computer animation and technology, the action looked like I was watching a high quality cartoon, and that's not as much fun for me, typically. Free comic book day: I grab what few things will appeal to my nieces/nephew, typically, and not much more. Here are a few questions I've never asked about FCBD, perhaps you can answer them on Friday: How many different books are produced each year? Not how many copies do they print, but how many different books are available? We know Marvel and DC turn out some stuff, and indy publishers produce something. I use to count on getting a Bongo comic each year, but that's no longer a thing. So how many different free books are our there, were I to go to every comic book shop around the Twin Cities, knowing not every shop carries every free comic book. These are free, they're promotion oriented, they're not trying to retcon the origin of Flash. Are any of these free comic books of yesteryear valued collectibles these days? Occasionally I see a dealer selling an old one in their dollar box or something, but is there one that became must have and people buy and sell alongside Spider-Man 298 and Batman 426-429? Valued or not by collectors, what do you guys regard as the best free comic book you've read, and why? Looking forward to Friday night's preview!

As someone who reads random oldies and non-superhero stuff at this point in his life, I can't relate to Transformers talk or know what the "ultimate" titles at Marvel accomplish. Your store isn't stocking 300 new titles/month, so I'm not going to find indy comics, at least not new stuff. Do you guys keep tabs on what's going on at publishers that aren't DC/Marvel/Image? IDW was doing cool stuff with Back to the Future for a period of years and is now pimping TMNT, I see. Perhaps you guys do carry those. Perhaps I'm not your target audience, but I'm always curious to learn what's going on out there in the publishing world that's not the millionth adventure of Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine or Captain Carrot. Glad you talked about Image's Creature/Black Lagoon. That's the kind of stuff I'm interested in learning about, even if there's not a big review. Keep up the good work. I may be fascinated by what Flash is doing this month, any incarnation of him, but it's entertaining listening to the discussions. I'll be the one person out there who wants to hear more discussion about everything else of less significance happening in the industry.
