Hornby's turntable rewired (by me)
Переглядів 9 тис.3 роки тому
A turntable doesn't really have a place on a Network SouthEast era layout. However... As my toddler, the Young Controller, absolutely loves it. Fortunately, the first stage of my layout construction will be a heritage railway. A quick change of track plan (and an unbelievably lucky heritage railway) meant I found somewhere for it to live. As any owner of a Hornby turntable will know, they can b...
Twitter Model Train Show 2021 - video challenge

The layout at Buckhampton is obviously the most picturesque and exemplary model that is possible in OO gauge (or not) but I still wanted to take part in this year's #TwitterModelTrainShow. In the absence of top tier modelling or prototypical running (no self respecting Network SouthEast station would have GREEN canopy columns), I thought it might be fun to set myself a little video challenge ju...
Gaugemaster Track Cleaning Car (by Piko)

Dirty track! Surely the bane of all model railway enthusiasts. Sure, I've used a sanding block on the track (most notably when I first set the layout up). But, it's been nearly 6 months, and trains are starting to struggle (or is it maybe the cold and damp shed?). A more efficient solution was required. Enter the BR Railfrieght (Bauxite) Track Cleaning Wagon from the Gaugemaster Collection (mad...
Bachmann Class 166: fitting a new bogie
Переглядів 7944 роки тому
I love this generation of modern DMUs from Bachmann. Aside from an irritating noise from somewhere in the running gear, they have really smooth motors. Imagine my dismay when this Class 166 arrived more or less broken. Essentially a new trailing bogie was needed but they are impossible to source. Here's my solution. A cautionary tail about reading eBay descriptions carefully...
Making 'Intercity' work again (Pt.2 & upgrades)

In the second part of this mini-series, we discover whether it is possible to repair the old Hornby HST ringfield motor gear (spoilers - it is). Afterwards, you'll see how I 'upgraded' my old HST's appearances. I have followed other's advice and instructions but I've done a few things my own way (including making a mess of it...) Running: Stock that I actually fixed!

In this first running session video on the Buckhampton Model Railway, I thought it would be entertaining to see some items of rolling stock that I have actually managed to repair. Some items only needed a really good service whilst others needed a bit more. Sorry, not much Network SouthEast in this video - I wasn't brave enough to start fiddling with my modern rolling stock just yet!
Making 'Intercity' work again (old Hornby HST)
Переглядів 9 тис.4 роки тому
In this video, I attempt to make my childhood pride and joy, the older style Hornby HST (Intercity 125) work again. The motor turned but the train didn't move! My local model shop have taken £25 off of me for two attempts to no avail. I thought this might be of interest... My HST, called 'Intercity' is from Hornby's 'High Speed Train 125' set, R897. Many people would write it off and get a new ...
Making a 'Driver's eye view' camera wagon
Переглядів 2964 роки тому
I found a really tiny camera on wish.com - the SQ11 - and thought it might enable me to record some shots from the 'driver's' viewpoint. The quality isn't great but it will do. But, considering this cost me slightly less than £8, I really can't complain. Find out how I built my camera wagon and have a full guided tour of the layout (at 5:48 if you just want to see that)! If you want to make you...

    a small bit of engine oil on the motor shaft with help the solder take to the metal shaft when you solder a better pinion on there. Or as someone has said get a better pinion that needs to be pressed on.

    That is fine when you are bringing locos onto the sidings.. but what about when you turn a train around and want to take it out onto the track the turntable wiring is opposite to that of the lead in track.. how did you get around this? is there a reverse polarity switch or something else ??

    • @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923
      @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923 9 місяців тому

      The turntable itself has contacts that switch the polarity about half way round. Hornby did that, I can't take any credit for it.

    Excellent video. It's good to watch a video presented by a normal person. Too often a so called simple job involves incredibly complicated electronic work or access to equipment that none of us actually own. I reckon I could upgrade my HSTs this way and not destroy them during the process. Also, the auto focus going in and out made it amusing and I liked it. Thanks very much.

    Hi. Brilliant video. And I like the idea of recessing it into the baseboard. Two things. 1. Did you have to cut off the supporting feet on the Entrance Tracks for it to sit tidy on the baseboard? 2. How did you wire up the central feed wire? I have just acquired a turntable and as soon as I turn it off the Straight-on-ahead position, I lose contact to one of the tracks. I have worked out where the turntable changes it's polarity, but need to be able to keep both tracks in contact with the feed wires. Thanks in advance.

    • @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923
      @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923 Рік тому

      Thanks. For the entrance tracks, I drilled small holder to accommodate the little feet. I found this helps keep the turntable secure and the track still. With regards to the central feed, I assume you are talking about the power to the tracks on the actual turntable? Originally, I believe they were fed from the entrance road - you'll see two brass connectors under that one - they might need bending up/ cleaning to interface with the track properly. Alternatively, you can severe that connection (because it is unreliable) and connect the wires to the feed wires from your controller. I did this using terminal blocks under the baseboard by the table. I hope that helps.

    • @bobbowen65
      @bobbowen65 Рік тому

      @@buckhamptonmodelrailway5923Thanks for your reply. Yes, I was referring to the feed to the turntable track. I did take a quick look by removing the actual turntable itself and the wired are soldered to the brass connectors, unlike my old manual operated Hornby Turntable whereby the wires were connected by female spade connectors. It is my intention to run a seperate feed direct from the DCC Bus Wire. I have discovered that if the turntable is not isolated by way of the original switch, which feeds EITHER the turntable track OR the turntable motor, then as soon as the turntable begins to turn, it creates a dead short as the left track passes the right track. So once I get the connectivity to the turntable track sorted, I shall be removing the 4 x brass connectors on the ends of the turntable track. I have also contemplated reducing the overall diameter of the turntable by cutting it smaller, and then cutting out the same sized circle in the baseboard with a support screwed on beneath, so that the turntable itself is lowered to the same level as the baseboard, thus allowing the entrance tracks to be screwed down on a level plane after removing the support feet. Just a thought that it may look a little more life-like. What are your views on that?

    • @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923
      @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923 Рік тому

      I had also thought about reducing the size - the unused roads look silly. I decided that I would build over the top with a thin layer of grass or similar just in case I change my mind. Of course, I haven't actually done it yet!

    Hi, stumbled across this video and was after some advice. I have recently found my original Hornby 125 set from when I was a kid in the 1980s (recently rediscovered in my parents loft lol). Thing is after laying the track out and hooking up the power, no joy. When I last used it as a kid it worked just fine, so was wondering if you or anyone else could advise on how to go about checking what the issue is. If it needs a new power supply (assuming that’s what’s wrong) is it easy to get a replacement or will any modern one work with the old school stuff? I’m guessing it’s the power supply but not sure. Any help will be great fully appreciated as I’m at that age where I’d like to dust it off and start running it again…recently got back into RC after many decades so this is another toy ai want to resurrect lol

    • @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923
      @buckhamptonmodelrailway5923 2 роки тому

      Hi! Firstly, best of luck. Finding a fault is a really annoying process! The easiest thing to do first is try out your loco on another layout - don't suppose you know anyone nearby? Failing that, you could use a volt meter to see if there is actually any power to the rails. If there's no power, you probably need a new controller. If there is power, then it's a case of giving your loco a really good service (clean wheels, contacts, very lightly oil moving parts - not the motor). I'm sure there will be a video out there to give you step by step instructions. Good luck - I'd love to know how you get on.

My soldering skills are as bad as yours and I didn’t think to removed the other gears and guess what, yes I managed to melt them together🤣. The plug on the end of the cable is designed to make contact with two metal tabs on Mehano's proprietary terminal track. It is easily removable. You can change the direction with the rotary switch. Turn it all the way to 0 and then continue turning. You will hear a switch activating, which reverses the polarity output. There is a label at that area saying "Direction <>". To return the polarity, activate the switch the same way.

    Your right to upgrade the hst. The new ones are very expensive and to be honest appart from them colouring the vents on the top silver they look just the same. A cam motor is also a good cheap upgrade. Just a tip, to get the body off instead of using a screwdriver try a credit or debit card slid down the side, or plastic trim removal tools you would use for getting car door panels off with. Much less chance of damaging the model. Cheap to buy off ebay

    Interesting the problems you have had with your "childhood train". I was gifted a similar Hornby Starter Train Set of the Intercity 125 in the same livery about 30 or so years back (they looked sharp then). It certainly worked on Christmas day, but once my Dad had gone to the lengths of building and fitting a baseboard, the set refused to work ("big full -stop"). It was very saddening, despite best efforts to get it to work (service by Hornby, new power controller, tweaking track). In the end, I remember it being car-booted off; sad really. I can see where the potential faults may lie with these "ringfield" motors; these sets are made to a price to get people into the hobby as well. Nowadays you have recourse to correct these problems with the retailers and the manufactures, but back then channels for addressing such issues were much narrower. For my Dad, he saw it as a defeat by something that should been correctable and very straight forward. He then gifted me a set by a totally different manufacturer the following Christmas, and it continues to work faultlessly. The only caveat is I am unable to model the British Railway System.
