I got caught in a snow storm on I81 in March of 2002 while on my way to Florida. I had a Ford Crown Vic and had taken my snow tires off because I didn't want to ride all the way there and back with them on. When I got to Hazelton, it began to snow lightly but I could see off in the distance that it was snowing pretty heavily. I thought if I could get through to Maryland, I'd be in the clear as I was planning to stop at my wife's aunt and uncle's in Mt. Jackson, VA. As I continued on, the highway went from wet to snow gradually sticking in the passing lane and then on the driving lane. I adjusted my speed accordingly but people were still passing me. I passed several cars that had gone off the road. It got to the point that the road was completely snow covered. By then I was doing 35-40 mph with a line of cars behind me. At times, a car would come up to me in the passing lane, then drop back behind me. This happened a few times and I decided they saw my Maine plates and decided that if I was going slow, then maybe they should too. I got almost to Lebanon when traffic came to almost a stand still. We crept along for a few miles when I saw an exit and decided to get off. I got one of the last rooms; in talking with other people in line and coming into the lobby, I found out that it was snowing all the way to Virginia. One couple heading north told me they were only 20 miles from home, but decided they should get off the road for the night. When I looked out the window of my room, I could see 81 and it was a parking lot. Never saw a plow or sand/salt truck the whole time. When I got up the next morning, it was raining and the roads were clear. It was an interesting ride for sure.
