Isle Royale Part 4: Daisy Farm to Moskey Basin
Hey, I don't expect you to see this seeing as how this video was made 3 years ago, (great video by the way!) but my family is planning a trip to Isle Royale in the summer and we have never been. Any tips for us such as a good time to go and good places to stay? Ideally we want to stay in cabins so are looking for a month to go when there are not as many people. We also have a 5 year old, which means hiking would be more difficult, are there any good trails to go that might be lighter for someone younger? We still want to do backpacking from cabin to cabin however. Even if you can't answer these, I seriously appreciate the videos! They make me want to travel to Isle Royale even more!
I'd love to chat and give you some ideas/options, but I think maybe it would be easier via email! How about send me a message at erika.e.chapman@gmail.com? A few questions first: what end of the island do you see yourself arriving at, and how many days were you thinking of staying?
ugh- music
windigo to chippewa this summer cant wait. love watching the videos of this place has me so excited. thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! If you’re looking to see some moose, you’ll definitely see some at Washington creek near windigo if you spend the night!
I did the same hike solo a couple years ago except I started at 12 and 15 road parking. Did you go to the viewing platform at Highbanks? I saw some car campers but not a single other backpacker. It was a great section and watching your video brought back good memories. thanks!
I did make it to the platform but unfortunately there were a few teens there playing music and being a bit rowdy that just wasn’t my vibe, so I didn’t explore as much as I would have liked. I also didn’t run into any other backpackers, but a bikepacker passed me!
It’s so beautiful there! It looks so relaxing! New here can’t wait to see more videos!!
Thanks! So glad you liked it. 😊
Amazing capture!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind comments. 🥰
When I camped at Moskey basin there were Fresh Wolf tracks in the campsite! I havent seen wolf but I know they saw me?
1 trip Off Trail w EarthWatch we saw 33 moose! 13 in 1 day! We woke up w Moose in our campsite! They will go towards people to avoid the wolves!
How exciting! Yes, the wolves are good at staying hidden. I’m sure we’ve came close to them before without even knowing it.

I'm going back to Isle Royale Aug 2021
That’s awesome! We’re hoping to go back too, but maybe in September. I hear they’re expecting it to be especially busy this year.
It’s training Time!
I'm glad that we're going back again this fall!
I love you
We enjoyed your video. You must've been there around the same time we were. It's an awesome park!
Love your dog! Great video
Thanks, I think she’s pretty great too! ❤️
Whatchu do on flats😭😂
Love it! I was just there, one of my favorite places
Nice campsite! 👍
It was pretty sweet!
That looked like a lovely trip! I loved it, new subscriber here from Prague :)
Davud Akhundzada thank you! Prague is a beautiful place! I had the pleasure of visiting about 15 years ago
We were there during the last week in August. 2019. We stayed two nights in shelter 4 or 5 at Moskey, and took a day hike to Ritchie. We found a fresh moose femur on that trail between Moskey and Ritchie. Not nearly as interesting as the entire skeleton! Thanks for sharing this!
Devin Thompson we were there the exact same time, and this was also on the trail between Richie and Moskey. I know the exact femur you’re talking about because we found that at first too, then we started hunting around a bit because we figured there might be more to it and that’s when we found the rest about 10 ft off the trail and about 50ft from the femur.
@@outsideforthecount cool! I remember the smell very well, so this certainly explains it. We're ready to go back now. Moskey was definitely our favorite!
Love love love that hike in snow ain\sleet!
Not helpful. Snarky though and funny.
Hey Erika, just found your channel. I will be backpacking the JRP as my fourth shakedown hike next month. Can't wait! I am training for my epic journey on the Appalachian Trail, beginning in February of 2020. I'll v-logg and backpack from GA to ME. I just Subscribed to your channel and clicked the like button (Us Michiganders have to support each other LOL).
@@UnboundCrow That is awesome!!! Good luck my friend and have a great time on the JRP!!
Did you guys rent the boat overnight? I'm just curious because last year we weren't allowed too. Great video thanks for sharing!
We did. It was a bit pricey I thought, but worth it!
Thanks for sharing your videos! You are creative and fun with your videos. I love your Canadian ending, eh!
Thanks for watching them! I love making them and sharing the outdoors with people! Hopefully someday soon I'll be able to make a video of a trip to Killarney!
@@outsideforthecount Search La Cloche Silhouette Trail. It is an epika trail! :) I loved the Isle Royale video also. Inspiring me to hike it.
Do you have a camp site preference in lowney creek?
Can snowboarders take a toboggan down the mountain?
Lol, of course! And we do it with style. 😎
Thank you for sharing. I visited there this past year myself and your video brought back good memories. However, I stayed on the Greenstone Ridge the entire way, hiking one end of the island to the other in 3 days. While I did enjoy it, I wish I had stayed a longer time to deviate from the main trail. Do you feel that seven days was enough time or do you wish you guys would have planned for a longer stay yourselves?
Robert Pawelek I wish we could have stayed a month if we could! There's a lot of the island to see, but I think we were able to see a decent chunk in the time we were there.
I just went there 1 day ago for Boy Scouts. I had a great time, and those snake on the island were pretty mean. I got bit multiple times. Did you like it, because it was awesome! The swamp was pretty cool, and we camped 1 night at lake manitou, and one near Lake Michigan. By the way nice video, seems like you had a lot of fun.
Shadowviper we had a great time! It's definitely a place I recommend to friends. I think in all we counted over 30 snakes on our trip, no bites though!
Really similar to IFHT’s style, I like it.
thats exactly what i thought when i heard: "And you too can..."
@@grip2421 same
Jesus! That snake almost got you!!!!!!!!!!
Haha, I had the camera on a telescoping pole, or a 'selfie stick' if you will, so he was nowhere near me.
Been to South Manitou several times. Never North. I was always led to believe North was more desolate/rural. Doesn't look it.
"Wilderness" is a better way to describe it. There's a campground near the dock, but that's it. the rest of the island is backpacking. Definitely worth a trip if you've been to South.
I would say definitely more desolate than South. We only saw one other person the whole time we were there, and there's no real formal campsites on the island other than the few by the dock. All the buildings were abandoned 60+ years ago.
Thanks for the post! Cottage row brought back a lot of great memories. I stayed in Monte Carlo and the cottage just south as a kid in the late 60's - 70's.
Well done.
That was enjoyable. Thank you for posting.
Great trip. Great video.
Great video! What time of year did you go? The trees are green, but you're dressed pretty warmly.
Scott Plumer, sorry I don't check my channel very often. We went late June and got lucky with weather. I'd say it was probably highs of around upper 60s/ low 70's, and lows around 45. It was nice to go before the busy season picked up.
